* Bulk Up allows Great Tusk to reliably beat Choice Band Iron Hands and Choice Band Annihilape. When combined with Taunt, Bulk Up gives Great Tusk a reliable matchup into common Annihilape sets, as the moves work together to disallow Annihilape's own Bulk Up + Taunt combination while playing around Annihilape's Rage Fist and Counter.
* Close Combat lets Great Tusk reliably beat Slaking, while Knock Off is useful to beat Choice item Magnezone.
* The Defense EVs let Great Tusk survive Jolly Choice Band Slaking's Giga Impact, while the Speed EVs let it outspeed Adamant Choice Band Slaking.
* Against non-Air Balloon Skeledirge, Great Tusk has a choice to use either Headlong Rush or Taunt. Headlong Rush OHKOes most Skeledirge sets, like Mental Herb Skeledirge, but has a low chance to OHKO defensive Weakness Policy Skeledirge, which can OHKO in return with Weakness Policy-boosted Blast Burn. However, if Skeledirge uses Will-O-Wisp, Great Tusk's Headlong Rush 2HKOes it. Great Tusk can use Taunt to stop Skeledirge's Will-O-Wisp, but this loses to Skeledirge's Torch Song.
* If Air Balloon Skeledirge uses Will-O-Wisp on the first turn, Great Tusk has to correctly predict this and use Taunt to win. If Skeledirge does not use Will-O-Wisp, Great Tusk can use Knock Off into Headlong Rush to win. However, if Air Balloon Skeledirge uses Torch Song on the first turn while Great Tusk uses Taunt, Skeledirge would win.
* Against Magnezone, Great Tusk can use Knock Off into Headlong Rush to play around Choice Specs Magnezone's Hyper Beam.
* If using Knock Off over Close Combat, Great Tusk should use Headlong Rush twice to 2HKO Jolly Choice Band Slaking; however, against Adamant Choice Band Slaking, Great Tusk should use Bulk Up followed by Headlong Rush twice to win.
