Grimmsnarl's niche comes with its access to Prankster alongside dual screens, Taunt, and a solid defensive typing, which makes it an effective support Pokemon on hyper offense teams. Prankster allows Grimmsnarl to get its screens up before the opponent can attack it and Prankster Taunt can prevent opposing Defog attempts from Tapu Fini or Zapdos aimed at removing said screens. Taunt also prevents opposing entry hazard setters like Landorus-T, Garchomp, and Heatran from setting up their hazards, as well as denying opposing setup opportunities from the likes of Mega Latias, Mega Garchomp, Volcarona, and Mega Scizor, which are all traits greatly valued by the hyper offense teams Grimmsnarl supports. Spirit Break is preferred over Thunder Wave to hit Dark-type Pokemon that are immune to Prankster moves, especially Ash-Greninja and Hydreigon, while also hitting Mega Lopunny and Garchomp. Light Clay allows Grimmsnarl to get 8 turns of Reflect and Light Screen instead of the usual 5. The given EV spread allows Grimmsnarl to act as a soft check to Mega Lopunny and Mega Garchomp.
Dual screens support effectively doubling the bulk of your team is greatly appreciated by frail sweepers like Bisharp, Serperior, and Volcarona. Additionally, they can be used to bolster already bulky setup sweepers like Manaphy, Mega Garchomp, and Mega Scizor to almost unkillable levels. Defensively, Grimmsnarl needs teammates that can switch into Mega Mawile, Kartana, and Heatran, so teammates like your own Mega Scizor, Bisharp, Mega Gyarados, and Kommo-o are vastly important. Good checks to Ash-Greninja are also very important, as preventing its transformation is vital for hyper offense teams. Partners such as Kommo-o and Rillaboom can help alleviate this issue. Landorus-T and Mew are excellent partners for Grimmsnarl by setting up entry hazards alongside its screens, letting the team setup and sweep much easier. Pokemon that abuse the use of Defog, such as Bisharp and Serperior, make great partners by forcing the opponent to keep screens up or face down a more vicious attacker.

Thunder Wave is a nice option to cripple opposing Pokemon that rely on their Speed, such as Mega Lopunny, Kartana, and Hawlucha. However, this leaves Grimmsnarl without a way to reliably damage Dark-type Pokemon which leaves it vulnerable to let Ash-Greninja transform freely.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: Despite dual screens decreasing the amount of damage Grimmsnarl has to take, strong wallbreakers such as Kartana, Mega Mawile, Heatran, and Mega Medicham all threaten Grimmsnarl heavily.
**Taunt**: Taunt from opposing Tapu Fini or Heatran will limit Grimmsnarl to either Light Screen or Reflect, not both. However, Grimmsnarl can Taunt them first to stop this.
**Knock Off**: Removing Grimmsnarl's Light Clay decreases the amount of turns that dual screens will be active, cutting into how effectively Grimmsnarl can support its team. Weavile, Clefable, Ferrothorn, and Tapu Fini all commonly carry Knock Off.
