Thanks to its unique combination of Grassy Surge and Grassy Glide, Grookey is a great revenge killer in the tier, with Wood Hammer helping to deal huge damage against the likes of Shellder and Gothita. Knock Off is a strong attack that removes the opponent's item, which means that regular checks to Grookey, like Vullaby and Koffing, are scared of switching in. U-turn is a powerful pivot option that adds momentum to the team and helps get in frailer threats safely like Choice Scarf Mienfoo or Diglett-A. Tera Grass allows you to pick up even more KOs with Wood Hammer or Grassy Glide thanks to the boost, potentially OHKOing threats like Zorua-H, Numel, and Mudbray. In spite of its strengths, Grookey has the problem of being a pure Grass type, which is a huge problem for matchups like Vullaby, Stunky, and Growlithe-H, who can all deal massive damage to it or force a switch, so it definitely appreciates support from Pokemon that can do well into these threats like Mudbray, Diglett-A, and Rhyhorn. Setup sweepers like Shellder and Alolan Sandshrew value Grookey's ability to easily pivot into them, since it can give the team valuable turns to sweep the game.
