Grumpig has always tried its hardest to differentiate itself from other, more popular Psychic-types in the NU tier, such as Gardevoir and Musharna, who have better overall bulk and moves, as well as reliable recovery. Its sole claim to fame is its unique trait (among Psychic types), Thick Fat, and its ability to phaze with Whirlwind. With the release of BW2, however, it gained another advantage: being able to use Heal Bell along with Whirlwind, which was previously an illegal combination. Sadly, even with this new boon, it's still a rather underwhelming special wall in the NU tier. Play to its strengths, however, and you won't be disappointed.

Example sets:

Grumpig@Leftovers
Trait: Thick Fat
Nature: Calm (+SpDef, -Atk)
EVs: 252 HP, 4 Def, 252 SpDef
~Heal Bell/Thunder Wave
~Whirlwind
~Taunt/Focus Blast
~Psychic

Grumpig's new and improved support set. Heal Bell cures your team of accumulated statuses, and with Grumpig's resistances and bulk, it has quite a few opportunities to use it. Whirlwind phazes out Calm Mind boosters, as well as racking up Stealth Rock and Spikes damage, while Psychic ensures you aren't Taunt bait, as well as taking off huge chunks of HP from predicted switch-ins to frailer attackers in the NU tier, like Swellow and Zangoose.

Taunt is the preferred option for the fourth move, shutting down slower Pokemon like Alomomola and Amoonguss from statusing you or aiding their team, but Focus Blast can be used to nail Dark-type switch-ins like Cacturne and Absol for huge damage. Thunder Wave is also an option over Heal Bell if you're using another Pokemon like Vileplume or Lickilicky for Heal Bell/Aromatherapy support, both also having excellent defensive synergy with Grumpig. Thick Fat is the preferred ability, due to its superiority to Gluttony and Own Tempo and the added resistances to Fire- and Ice-type attacks it grants--resistances not shared by other Psychic-types in the tier.

With Whirlwind setting it apart from the other Psychic-types in the NU tier, Grumpig appreciates teammates that can set up entry hazards quickly and efficiently. Garbodor and Whirlipede can easily set up both Spikes and Toxic Spikes for your team, the latter having the additional advantage of luring in special Fire-type moves for Grumpig to switch into. Cacturne deserves special mention due to its near perfect synergy with Grumpig, setting up Spikes easily and threatening Dark-types with a powerful Drain Punch, though the two share a nasty Bug-type weakness.

By far and away, Grumpig's biggest weakness is its inability to heal itself, so having Wish-Pass support is required to use it. Alomomola can pass gigantic Wishes to Grumpig while tanking any Physical attack thrown at it. Lickilicky, however, has better synergy with Grumpig and can run Heal Bell on its own set, freeing up a moveslot for Grumpig.

So, any thoughts on everyone's favorite Psychic pig? I'll post up any other suggested movesets!

I think the last tier shifts have ruined grumpig's best niche as the best magmortar counter. Sure it gained Heal Bell but Musharna uses it much better in combination with synchronoize. Whirlwind is cool but a psychic phazer is not a very popular niche. Plus with black and white 2, fire and ice attacks come more often in the form of elemental punches from physcial attackers that can ruin grumpig with other coverage moves.

I use to run a resto chesto recycle set when magmortar was still in the tier, but now your better off with musharna and moonlight anyway.

You probably won't find any other set since gardevoir and musharna outclass him in almost every aspect. You might as well post these kind of sets in the project neverused revival thread next time since there isn't much to add to what's already been said.
