FireWaterGrassBulkyOffense

Hello!
I am back with another RMT for one of the GSC lower tiers, this time being PU. I have used this team many times when GSC PU was still on ladder and in numerous friendly games and tours in Ruins of Alph. All of the members on this team have excellent synergy toghether and it all flows well

TEAMBUILDING STRCUTURE

:Furret:

Furret @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- Double-Edge
- Curse
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

The best Pokemon in GSC PU, Furret is almost mandatory on every team. It is an excellent lead to punish the extremely common Venomoth and Murkrow leads while being generally quite tough to switch into with its powerful Double Edge. This particular variant of Furret pairs absolutely incredibly with Hitmonchan and Murkrow, with Hitmonchan able to switch into Rock-types easily and threaten Pokemon such as Elekid and Seadra that often try to revenge kill a weakened Furret, while Murkrow Pursuits Gastly, who is otherwise completely immune to this Furret. With these threats removed, Furret can clean up house. Checking Murkrow and Abra is also incredibly useful.

:Hitmonchan:
Hitmonchan (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- High Jump Kick
- Body Slam
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

One of the best Pokemon in the metagame, Hitmonchan brings so much utility that I consider it the clear #2 in the tier. With all the dangerous Rock-, Water-, and Elekid’s running around Hitmonchan dominates them and can spread paralysis for the slow Sunflora. Hitmonchan also works well with Magcargo for Chans ability to force out Rock-types such as Geodude and Omanyte. It forms a fierce offensive combo with Murkrow, checking each other’s threats, while Murkrow Pursuits the three Pokemon that check Hitmonchan the best being Gastly, Abra, and Drowzee. Body Slam being able to potentially cripple the numerous base 90 Pokemon that outspeed Seadra, being Venomoth, Abra, and Poliwhirl means it also pairs well with it.

:Murkrow:
Murkrow @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- Drill Peck
- Hidden Power [Dark]
- Pursuit
- Haze

While Gastly is not particularly common, having two Pokemon walled by it is definitely not ideal, so Murkrow is the third team member. It’s excellent pairing with Hitmonchan as already mentioned is great, but having Haze and being 91 Speed make it this teams best answer to the most dangerous sweeper in GSC PU, Poliwhirl. Murkrow is also able to shut down sweep attempts from Pokemon such as Curse Hitmontop and Furret, and stops Agility Pass teams with Cubone from sweeping. It pairs well with Seadra with the seahorse’s ability to leave many Pokemon such as Furret weak enough to be picked off by Pursuit, and one of the most common Pokemon that switches into Murkrow is Magcargo, giving Seadra a free opportunity to come in.

:Magcargo:
Magcargo @ Leftovers
Ability: none
- Fire Blast
- Rock Slide
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Magcargo’s unique blend of offensive and defensive utility while also countering CurseRestTalk Furret aswell as Venomoth and Murkrow make it a useful team member. It is the first member of the FWG core and pairs well with Seadra and Sunflora. While Magcargo is not that good against Furret carrying Surf, an ideal play is to pivot out of Surf into Hitmonchan so it doesn’t take upwards of 40% from Double Edge switching in. Sunflora is one the few Pokemon that can safely check Seadra, the biggest threat to Magcargo, while Seadra’s good Defense and typing let it handle Pokemon such as Cubone and Hitmontop.

:Seadra:
Seadra @ Leftovers
Ability: none
IVs: 14 HP / 28 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Electric]
- Haze
- Ice Beam

The second member of the FWG Core, Seadra is an excellent offensive threat and pairs very well with Hitmonchan and Sunflora while dominating Baton Pass with Haze. It’s powerful Hydro Pump is tough to switch into, and destroys Pokemon like Magcargo and Cubone. Seadra greatly appreciates paralysis support from Hitmonchan letting it outspeed and revenge kill Venomoth and Furret most notably.

:Sunflora:
Sunflora @ Leftovers
Ability: none
IVs: 26 Def
- Growth
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Synthesis

Growth Sunflora is an underrated threat in GSC PU. The main issue is that choosing a Hidden Power on it really sucks, choosing between being walled by Venomoth, Magcargo, Murkrow etc. But it makes for an almost perfect Elekid answer barring freeze and is a good Seadra answer. With paralysis support, Sunflora can potentially sweep teams late game when the checks to it, Venomoth and Magcargo, are removed. Synthesis also gives it good longevity throughout a game

Click team sprites for teampaste!

I like the inclusion of Magcarco & Sunflora here (these 2 are very underrated) as well haze Seadra being able to stop baton pass efforts in their tracks is ever so precious.
Maybe consider adding rapid spin on Hitmonchan to undo Pinco's work, other than that very balanced team indeed!

In pu though Pineco doesn't exist. It's actually one of the top 4 mons of NU I believe. You can use pu mons in NU but not the other way around so it's fairly flexible.

Spikes are generally quite in uncommon in PU, Delibird is the only legal Spiker and Delibird is just bad as a Spiker due to having no defensive utility or longevity.

Yep, Pineco is a dominant force in NU.

Ooops my bad, still getting used to the split between NU & PU! xD

But to be fair Delibird isn't the worst thing around & can work if a bit of team building is taken into account with its inclusion on a team. For one, it can come in on predicted earthquakes, hp bug or giga drain defensively and force something out (such as tangela, parasect, cubone, geodude, etc) with ice beam in order to lay down spikes.

Unlike in future generations, Delibird only has to get that 1 spare turn to use it since there's no 2nd or 3rd layer to go & get. Fun fact, it's also the only rapid spinner in all of GSC that is completely immune to the spikes that it has come in to remove (sadly spikes + spin on the same set is not allowed).

Although somewhat rare, spikes does exist in PU & having a method to get rid of them is never a bad idea ;)
