Gyarados finds many opportunities to set up Dragon Dance and sweep on Flying teams thanks to its great bulk and ability to force out foes thanks to Intimidate. Substitute allows Gyarados to take advantage of passive walls like Toxapex so that it can set up freely on them, while Taunt shuts down attempts to both inflict status on it and remove its boosts with Haze. Earthquake provides coverage against Poison- and Steel-types such as Toxapex, Clodsire, and Hisuian Goodra. 248 HP and 8 Defense EVs ensure that Gyarados's Substitute does not get broken by Clodsire's Poison Jab.
Landorus and Gliscor pair well with Gyarados, as with their Electric immunity, they can take on foes like Raging Bolt, Magnezone, and Regieleki. Additionally, Gliscor spreads status with Toxic, sets up entry hazards to aid in Gyarados's sweeping, and matches up well against several entry hazard removers like Excadrill, Glimmora, and Regieleki. Skarmory also sets up Spikes to aid Gyarados, and it can set up its IronPress combination on physically offensive threats such as Dragon Dance Dragapult and Mamoswine. Due to Gyarados's vulnerability to Stealth Rock, it appreciates entry hazard removal from Corviknight so that it finds more opportunities to switch in; Corviknight can also pivot Gyarados in with U-turn and aids against Choice Specs Kyurem. In return, Corviknight appreciates Gyarados taking on Fire-types such as Heatran and Volcarona. Choice Scarf Enamorus provides valuable speed control for Flying teams, as it is able to outspeed and threaten speedy foes like non-Choice Scarf Iron Valiant and Greninja, and it also aids greatly in the Dragon matchup, taking on foes such as Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Garchomp. Additionally, Enamorus provides Healing Wish support to aid Gyarados in its sweeping. Enamorus greatly appreciates Gyarados covering Steel-types like Gholdengo, Iron Treads, and Scizor in return. Early-game wallbreakers like Choice Band Dragonite and Choice Specs Zapdos clear out bulky threats like Sinistcha and Corviknight so that Gyarados can find opportunities to sweep. Lastly, Gyarados can enable other sweepers like Galarian Moltres and Thundurus-T by clearing out foes like opposing Gliscor, so it can sweep late-game. Specifically, Thundurus-T provides an Electric immunity and aids against Water-types such as Rotom-W, Pelipper, and Ogerpon-W.
