item: Toxic Orb / Flame Orb
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 172 Def / 84 Spe
ability: Guts

[SET COMMENTS]
  • In the words of Uragg, "This smashes shit."
  • Fake Out allows safe activation of your Toxic Orb which allows you to smash shit with CC and Stone Edge.
  • Bullet Punch helps Hariyama bypass his low speed
  • Guts is amazing

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • 84 Speed evs allow Hariyama to outspeed base 60's like Weezing
  • Adamant and max attack allows Hariyama to smash shit
  • 172 Def because Hariyama already has mucho hp
  • Ice Punch could be used over Stone Edge to hit Flying types while also dealing heavy damage to Gligar

[SET]
name: SubPunch
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Focus Punch
move 3: Ice Punch / Stone Edge
move 4: Bulk Up / Payback
item: Leftovers
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
ability: Thick Fat

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Sets up on Chansey and proceeds to Focus Punch errythang
  • Due to the Payback nerf I find Bulk Up to be better but I'll leave it up to QC
  • Ice Punch hits Fliers more reliably than Stone Edge but the latter has more power

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Walled by Dusclops so teammates who can take it out are appreciated (although Hariyama can set up on it)
  • SpD evs in conjunction with Thick Fat allow Hariyama to set up on Special Attackers
  • Obvious Attack evs are obvious

[SET]
name: Rest Talk
move 1: Force Palm
move 2: Whirlwind
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
item: Leftovers
nature: Impish / Careful
evs: 12 HP / 252 Def / 244 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Aims to be a huge pain in the ass
  • Force Palm spreads paralysis which in conjunction with Whirlwind can rack up a lot of entry hazard damage.
  • Counters Houndoom and a bunch of other stuff

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Cross Chop can be used over Force Palm for more power
  • Stone Edge, Ice Punch, or Payback can be used over Sleep Talk
  • evs give great overall bulk
  • Knock Off could be used somewhere to be even more annoying
  • USE WITH HAZARDS!!!!!

[Checks and Counters]
  • Bulky Psychic-types such as Mew
  • Crobat kills with Brave Bird but takes a crap ton of damage
  • Togekiss takes it with some flinches
  • Gligar walls anything without Ice Punch
  • Slowbro doesn't take very much damage from an unpoweredup payback

[Other Options]
  • Belly Drum
  • Rock Slide
  • Smelling Salt with Force Palm
  • Seismic Toss
  • Toxic
[Dream World]
Sheer Force is trash, I don't know if it's released but even if it is theres almost nothing that benefits from it.

Meh, I myself I am not very fond of an un-STAB Bullet Punch but Hariyama doesn't have the biggest of movepools so its understandable. Also, Seismic Toss is weird, because base 120 Attack hurts a lot of stuff.

The only other things I can think of is to add Body Slam and Counter to Other Options.

tbh, I'd rather use machamp (which is definitely UU this round) instead of hariyama. I realize that they're not exactly the same, but Machamp seems superior in a general sense.

Your point being...?
In the words of Heysup:
First of all, we do not care if other Pokemon outclass [insert Pokemon here]. It is irrelevant. As long as any Pokemon is actually viable it should be given an analysis so that people know what it does or how to use it most effectively. Additionally, in some cases two similar Pokemon can be used together to break walls for each other or some other such strategy, making it viable.

No specially defensive Bulk Up set? I don't think it would deserve a set of its own, but perhaps a mention in OO?

I personally think Hariyama should stick with either Fake Out and Bullet Punch, not both. One of the biggest appeals of Hariyama is its versatility as a fighting mon that doesn't get walled easily. I'd rather use the fourth slot for a coverage move like Ice Punch or Payback rather than a second priority move.

One of the greatest asset of Hariyama over Machamp is its bulk. Machamp would need to have a defense / special-defense boosting nature to reach the defensiveness of Hariyama, whereas Hariyama can stay Adamant and be either physically or specially defensive.

Plus it has Guts, so it's not afraid of Wisps.

Hariyama warrants a CB set imo.

I also agree with Jubilee that Hariyama should have a designated Bulk Up set. Bulk Up provides wall-breaking power, whereas 3 moves provides the versatility that makes Hariyama good.

I agree with the failings of payback. Besides, ghosts that are faster (mismag) will get smashed even by Stone Edge/Ice Punch (through fross will laugh at Ice Punch), where as the bulkier ghosts are all slower than Hariyama...

I'm really a fan of the Sleep Talk set, and the Guts set looks great as well. I'm only unsure of that Bulk Up / SubPunch set...not so sure if it's worth an entire set.

Oh yeah Hariyama gets Thick Fat... Why not mention that the SpD sets can check Chandelure? I'm not a fan of the Sub set, but a standalone Bulk Up set would be cool.

QC APPROVED (1/3)

can we mention, just mention in AC, guts on the sleeptalker? Gives the big man an appreciated power boost to an otherwise weak attack

You should have a DEDICATED SPECIALLY DEFENSIVE BULK UP other then resttalk. Also, subpunch should be relegated to OO. Subpunching is really not that great on Hariyama, and his reliance on HP for most of his bulk will make sub hurt you a lot.

Subpunch does look OO to me honestly, not worth a set.

Mmm... I'm not sure Force Palm should be the primary attack on the Restalk set... I'd say even Cross Chop is better. Slash it in front of Force Palm. Guts is also an option on Restalk (for obvious reasons), and could even be used with Stone Edge, and POSSIBLY Close Combat. A slow Close Combat is not bad (in fact, in some ways it's better than a fast close combat). Anyway, you should talk about the differences between Thick Fat and Guts ResTalk users.

Also, a special defensive set with bulk up and Thick Fat does sound like it could be pretty nasty. If thundercunt (awful name, wow...) has an EV spread, it'd be good to see it.

I disagree about the Force Palm issue. Higher PP, accuracy, and paralysis chance (anyone who has used resttalk snorlax will tell you that paralysis is vital) make Force Palm the best choice on defensive Hariyama. Because it doesn't get Drain Punch, all other viable fighting attacks should go in AC.

Also echoing the sentiment that SubPunch really isn't worth it, while a specially defensive bulk up set looks promising.

There has not been much activity in this thread, so I figured I could interject by adding a possible Hariyama set that you all want.

The EV's are from an old set I found while mucking around in the Locked/Outdated for 4th generation, but I think it can work in 5th generation if we tweak it around a bit.

move 1: Bulk Up
move 2: Force Palm
move 3: Payback
move 4: Whirlwind/Substitute
item: Leftovers
nature: Careful
evs: 80 Hp / 172 Atk / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
ability: Thick Fat

There was also a variant in the same thread by putting 100 EV's from Attack into Speed to outspeed stuff like Weezing in order to set up Substitute before getting Will-O-Wisped. The main problem I would say is that Hariyama does not have many attacks with high base power to go with that sweet Attack stat of his.
