Overview
########
Our fatty fighter is again here after something like 10 years! Hariyama is famous thanks to its 144 HP stat, which is paired with a very interesting 120 Atk and a wonderful STAB in Cross Chop, as well as an access to Bullet Punch (now extremely useful against Fairy types!)
Its abilities are useful for various tasks: Thick Fat helps taking Fire- and Ice type moves;
Guts is a bit risky, but it "gives him wings" and, in tandem with Protect, an Attack boost is granted.
However, every pokemon has faults, and Hariyama is no exception. Although it has an astonishing HP stat, its defenses are a bit underwhelming, and its Speed is not the best.
There are of course better Fighting types that are faster or stronger, but Hariyama was a good choice in Black &White RU and it could function well in this generation.
SET NAME
########
name: BULK UP
move 1: Bulk Up
move 2: Cross Chop
move 3: Bullet Punch
move 4: Payback
Ability: Thick Fat
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 64 HP/ 172 Atk/ 16 Def/ 252 SpD
Nature: Careful
Moves
========
1- Using only one Bulk Up, Hariyama reaches 445/ 240/ 240 defenses, and only with three (although common) weaknesses, it can sponge some hits;
2- Cross Chop is the STAB of choice, because it has no drawbacks (stats drop like CCombat or Superpower) and a good possibility of critical hits;
3- BULLET PUNCH! HOLY PRIORITY MOVE, THAT SMASHES FAIRY TYPE POKEMON!
Joking aside, Bullet Punch here is mandatory because it's priority and also the best move against Fairies that plague the metagame;
4- Another problematic type is Psychic, so Payback with his pitiful Speed is a good choice.
Set Details
========
EVs spread is made with the calibre: 64 HP give him good endurance, 172 Atk give him access to 300 Atk, and 252+ SpD maximize special side. With 16 EVs and a Bulk Up, the defenses are equal.
A Careful nature is the best one, because there are faster pokemon than Hariyama, and a Speed drop is not a good idea.
The choice of the item, Leftovers, is superb, because with leftovers Hariyama can take more hits.
Usage Tips
========
This Hariyama should be used when Psychic- and Fairy types are out. After a boost, however, it could become more than a danger for the opponent team, thanks top newfound bulk and priority.
Team Options
========
Toxic Spikes completely hamper that set, so a RSpinner is mandatory: examples are Excadrill, Blastoise or Kabutops.
A Trick Room setter would be nice, because it turns one of Hariyama's downfall into a focus point, so pokemon like Reuniclus are welcome.
Other Options
########
Hariyama has a few other option. One might think that Close Combat would be better than Cross Chop, but on such a set, it will totally ruin the defenses that are not so outstanding.
A set with Guts is possible, with Bullet Punch, Close Combat, Fake Out and Protect for an safety activation of a Flame Orb: however, CCombat defendes drop, burn damage and possible entry hazards drive Hariyama's HP in the red zone quickly, too quickly.
Checks & Counters
#############
- Azumarill (Speed tie with no EVs in Speed, Huge Power & neutrality to Steel is to watch out);
- Klefki (Prankster paralysis hampers TFat Hariyama);
- Mawile (before megaevolving has Intimidate, and after the scary Huge Power);
-Fairies in general (Gardevoir and Florges are a pain);
- Psychic types (although Alakazam is OHKO by Payback and Bullet punch);
- Toxic & Toxic Spikes;
- Useless against Poison types.
