Harlequinade Brigade

...........................
In a metagame where speed and power prevail the most, certain pokemon has started to fall to the bottom, while previous pokemon who were considered "powerhouse" or "walls" are slowly being backed into a corner. With the introduction of permanent weather, sweepers with base speed of over 100, and power priority moves, any pokemon that isn't able to fit into those niche, or have the defense/bulk to withstand it are now left behind. This in turns leaves alot of teams in the metagame to look very similar, because theres not much to pick from when the best are constantly being used.
Harlequinade Brigade is a team that primarily focuses on utilizing typing and offense to overcome the prominent weather abuse in the OU metagame. With constant abuse of permanent weather, finding a team to overcome all situations, while still being able to trump non-weather teams (without losing focus on taking down weather teams) is difficult and has not been easy. Through the use of crippling enemies utilizing paralysis to inhibit their sweeping capabilities and counter sweep, using the right pokemon, and the power is the central concept of Harlequin Brigade. This Brigade goal is to tear down the wall between power and speed, and create a more unique style of battle that isn't just a speed war. As gimmicky as it may seem, if you play it right and utilize status effects and effective typing, you can overcome the powerhouse/weather predominant metagame without having to mimic similar teams that everyone else runs. Thus, the team building begins by identifying weather threats and using more precautions to help counter them.
Note: The concept of this team came from this thread: http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3455034
Team Building
Weather Threats:
First thing I had to consider was weather threats. First I decided to look at three prominent weather threats:
Rain Team: Politoed + Painful Water Attacks + 100% Accuracy Thunder + Hidden Power Grass.
The first pokemon I thought of to counter this was a bulky steel/grass type to help tank both water and electric attack, while still being able to counter back. Ground would work too, if it was fast enough to OHKO these water pokemons. I couldn't risk Gastrodon since HP Grass is being used more, and any other water types to help counter could end up being bad. Having water to counter these rain teams also leaves me electricity weak.
Sun Team: Ninetails + Solarbeam + Painful Fire Attacks + Really Fast Dinosaurs/Fan-Ninja-Thing + Other Chlorophyll
I needed something that could help tank all of this, and what better than a fire type himself? It needed to have access to both ground/rock and fire to help stop those speedy grass types and powerful fire types being abused.
Sand Team: Excadrill + Excadrill + Excadrill + Weather Damage
Sand teams are normally not a big threat since sandstorm provides rock with 50% special defense boost, but Excadrill with Sand Rush becomes a huge threat. Wrapping a team around this guy is a challenge, needs to be able to survive a hit, and be able to kill it through priority or regularly being bulky.
Hail Team: Abomasnow + 100% Blizzard + Weather Damage
Hail teams are really painful to deal with. Blizzard just hurts too much, and most of the hail teams are good at stalling, or killing you while you struggle to keep your pokemons alive in the hail. Thinking to myself, a fire type that can deal with them is great, mostly because finding myself an ice type brings me weakness to sun team and rain team.
Considering all that, the team building begins. First, I wanted a pokemon that can specialize in taking care of all those situations. The first pokemon that came to mind is Nidoking, who is blessed with the ability to utilize Fire/Electric/Ice/Ground, which are all great coverage. His ground typing allows him to take on 100% thunder and hurt ice pretty bad, however, his mediocre speed, even with full investment into speed alongside of a speedy nature leaves him prone to being killed by faster pokemon. Thus, I needed a support.
This than lead to Gorebyss, who is able to tank (to a certain extent) water types, ice types, and set up on leads that isn't Ferrothorn. Gorebyss can shell smash and pass on the beautiful boost onto Nidoking, allowing him to sweep any opposition with the only threats being priority attacks and Excadrill with Sandstorm up. However, Gorebyss herself can sweep. Hydro pump + Shell Smash is nothing to joke around, and is great denting or plowing through enemies when Baton Passing isn't the right time.
However, let's worry about Excadrill later, because right now sun teams still cause me problems. Solarbeam/speedy grass types can outspeed Nidoking, and because of its ground typing, potentially OHKO him. This than lead to Heatran, a commonly seen threat in the OU metagame. A specially defensive one would allow me to wall hail and sun teams, while countering back with ground/rock attacks and fire attacks. His steel typing allows him to take neutral damage from Bullet Punch and Vacuum Wave, although Mach Punch and Aqua Jet will start to cause problems. I needed something a bit more bulky to deal with rain teams, since if I happen to run into a Swift Swim, it would tear both Heatran and Nidoking apart, while Gorebyss just sits there and watch.
This lead me into finding a pokemon who I haven't seen in the metagame much, but specialized with the right ability to help me utilize him in a unique way. Serperior was later added because of his amazing 113 speed, allowing him to outspeed alot of threats. With Glare and decent bulk, it allows me to cripple enemies through paralysis, mostly the fast one so Nidoking can easily come in and take it out. Not only that, but Contrary allows me to boost Serperior's mediocre SpAtk to threatening levels, making him a sweeping machine when given the chance. His ability to tear through rain teams from his amazing speed and dream world ability with decent bulk assures me that this guy could do wonders.
Now its time to patch up any holes, and with all four weather handles decent well, I decided to look at what I was lacking. A few threats began to appear: Excadrill, Gengar, Priority Attacks, Volcarona + Dugtrio. I decided to break this down and bit, and found a pokemon who surprisingly could handle all of those situations. Braviary boast a 123 atk and 100 hp, he is decently bulky. However, his defenses are barely average, and his speed is mediocre as well. Utilizing Serperior and his ability paralyze alot of threats, I realized that Braviary could work out well. He will scare away Volcarona with little to no effort, and given that I decide to pass on Shell Smash to this guy, he can tear through Dragons, Gengars and be able to live Priority Attacks. Bullet Punch, Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave and Aqua Jet will all do neutral damage on it, while Gengars will struggle to come in and tear this guy apart. However, with Dugtrio theres not much I can do but hope to overpower it.
Even with the slight problem with Dugtrio, if Braviary goes down I got Gorebyss and Serperior to fall back upon. Now all I needed was a lead. Something to help cripple to enemies, and Roserade came to mind. As of right now, all of my pokemon would be absolutely crippled through status effects. A support Roserade that can cause sleep, set up entry hazards and utilize aromatherapy to heal my team from status effects. Most of her weakness can easily be taken care of by careful prediction and utilizing my other pokemon.
After a bit more extensive battle as I started to face more advance players (reaching 1400+ points in P.O), I realized Braviary was not going to cut it. Therefore, I needed a replacement who is still able to take priority hits, and still make things cry. Feraligatr was than welcomed to the team. Packed with Sheer Force + Life Orb, and a wonderful move pool, he had much more coverage than Braviary. Bullet Punch and Aqua Jets are not effective against water, giving Feraligatr a longer life to continue his sweeping. I lost my ground immunity, but that can be remedied by switching Heatran's leftover to Air Balloon.
After continuous problems with not having enough defense or the right entry hazards (since toxic can only do so much, and the abuse of toxicroak/other poison times eliminates the setup), Ferrothorn was utilized. Ferrothorn gives me the much needed defense to help counter certain threats, and allows a secondary paralysis user next to Serperior. Crippling the enemy while setting up entry hazards is what Ferrothorn is great at. I lose out on aromatherapy, but at least this way I can focus on a more defensive style that has been more beneficial to my team.
Serperior falls prey to extremely offensive pokemon, and really faster opponents. Trick absolutely cripples Serperior, while alot of things can resist Serperior, making it tough for him to set up. Against a rain team he's fast and bulky enough to set up while tanking Ice Beam, however, he falls prey to priority Ice Shards. To remedy this, since Serperior priority was to utilize Glare to paralyze enemies while setting up on them, Whimsicott replaced him. Whimsicott priority Stun Spore, although shaky on accuracy, will hit everything (unlike Thunder-Wave) and will always have the priority. Thundurus will cause Whimsicott problems, but can be remedied through Ferrothorn or Nidoking. Whimsicott, because of his great ability, is a great anti-lead and a can trap enemies who dare attempts to set up, allowing Whimsicott to use them as fodder and allow someone else to switch in for the advantage.

Meet the Cottonwind

Whimsicott @ Leftover
Trait: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpDef
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Encore
- Stun Spore
- Leech Seed
- Substitute
The setup is simple, its a SubSeed setup on Whimsicott with Encore and Stun Spore. The idea is to send Whimsicott into something safely, or use her as a lead when the circumstances are good, and work on paralyzing the opponent. Encore is to trap enemies into certain moves, while SubSeed combo allows Whimsicott to stall out enemies and hopefully get some switch-outs to paralyze the new switch-in. Because of Prankster, I don't need to worry about the speed of the opponent. Reason I listed Whimsicott IVs is so when something comes in and confuses Whimsicott, the low Atk protects Whimsicott from hurting itself.
Weakness:
Fire/Flying/Ice are usually a problem but can be remedied by Heatran. Taunters are annoying, its just based on the pokemon and what I have at the time to help work around it. Sometimes it allows Ferrothorn to come in and setup.
...........................
Meet the Hydrodancer

Gorebyss @ White Herb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 HP / 176 SpDef / 80 Speed
Calm Nature (+SpDef, -Atk)
- Shell Smash
- Baton Pass
- Substitute
- Hydro Pump
Gorebyss EV spread is setup to give it enough bulk to live, and enough speed to where after one shell smash it should be able to outrun most threats. Substitute is there for when I know I can wall it, and it doesn't hurt to Hydro Pump enemies to dent them. The ability to Baton Pass not only Shell Smash, but perhaps Substitute is a blessing once Gorebyss is done tearing through enemies with Hydro Pump. With Roserade scaring rain teams, Gorebyss will scare sand and sun team. If I manage to Baton Pass Shell Smash onto Nidoking or Braviary, normally its a complete sweep from either one, making Gorebyss extremely invaluable. Most of her weakness can be cured by Ferrothorn or Heatran. White Herb is to reduce the defense reduction when first using Shell Smash, allowing Gorebyss to hopefully live through some priority attacks.
Weakness:
Electric types are forced to deal with either Heatran, Ferrothorn or Nidoking based on the circumstances. Grass types will summon Ferrothorn to come and begin setting up, or Heatran if its something Ferrothorn may struggle against. Taunters are also a big weakness to Gorebyss, and usually forces me to juggle onto a different pokemon to take care of the taunter.
...........................
Meet the Lavawalker

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 244 SpDef / 12 Speed
Calm Nature (+SpDef, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- Stealth Rock
- Roar
- Hidden Power Ice
Heatran EV spread is setup to make him specially defensive, with just a little bit more speed to outrun the other Heatrans in the game. Fire Blast is there for blasting through grass types and injuring steel, while Hidden Power Ice is to deal with dragons who wall it, and other ground/rock types. Stealth Rock allows me to setup another entry hazards when needed (and to cripple other enemies). Roar is to prevent people from setting up, or scout the opposition for something to destroy. Its also great when the threat is too big, allowing me to push it away for temporary relief. Heatran's biggest job is to wall grass types, ice types and anything else it can wall, and take them out with little to no effort. Air Balloon is chosen since now Heatran is temporary immune to ground, and with no other pokemon on the team immune to ground, is an asset to let him switch in on a ground attack.
Weakness:
Threatening Ground types are taken care of by Heatran (temporarily), and sometimes Gorebyss/Whimsicott if they plan to use Heatran as setup fodder. Water types normally will earn themselves a visit from Whimsicott, Ferrothorn, or Gorebyss based on the circumstances. Anything that walls it normally allows me to safely switch into Nidoking/Feraligtr/Ferrothorn/Gorebyss, which than normally allows me to deal some serious damage, or setup when given the chance.
...........................
Meet the Venomking

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpAtk / 252 Speed / 4 Def
Timid Nature (+Speed, -Atk)
- Flamethrower
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Earth Power
Nidoking has the ability to resist T-wave and Toxic, allowing easy switch-in based on what the opposition is doing. Because of his great move pool, he has a wide array of coverage to destroy anything from Ferrothorns to Excadrills. However, his mediocre speed is his achille's heel, and along his lackluster defense leaves him prey to priority moves and anything faster. This is normally remedied through Gorebyss, however, even without the boost, he's a force to be reckon with. Life Orb and Sheer Force allows him to not take damage from Life Orb, all while boosting his damage to a huge level. Anything that does not take it down is guaranteed to die. This is where Serperior comes in, with Glare hitting even ground types (take that Excadrill), and Whimsicott being able to outrun Gengar, Thundurus and Excadrill, crippling the enemy to allow Nidoking to sweep is what he does best at.
Weakness:
Ground types are taken care of by Heatran (temporarily), while Psychic will be visiting Heatran. Water types will visit Whimsicott/Ferrothorn/Gorebyss, and Ice will meet Heatran. Besides that, anything slower (even with the weakness to those types) will normally be OHKO'd or 2HKO'd by Nidoking. Anything faster than this guy (and threatening) forces me to use Heatran to Roar it away, or utilize Whimsicott to paralyze it.
...........................
Meet the Ironblade

Ferrothorn @ Shed Shell
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 208 SpDef
Impish Nature (+Def, -SpAtk)
- Spikes
- Thunder Wave
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
Ferrothorn can cause problems to rain team, resisting Grass, Ice and Water. His goal is to setup with Spike whenever he gets the chance, and Thunder Wave anything. Paralysis is extremely important, as my team heavily relies on crippling the opposition. Leech Seed is his only way of recovering health, as Shed Shell is a must for Magnezone, and other pokemons who plans to trap you. Power Whip will hurt and punch a hole through any water type, and even ground type as well (although its much more risky to do that.) Ferrothorn is also a great tank, where his EV is specialized to maximize his bulk specially and physically.
Weakness:
Fire types will be countered by Heatran, as well as Ground (if Heatran still has Air Balloon). Taunters can cause problem, and with the rest of my team, I need to switch around alot.
...........................
Meet the Waterlord

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Speed
Jolly Nature (+Speed, -Sp.Atk)
- Waterfall
- Rock Slide
- Ice Punch
- Crunch
Sheer Force + Life Orb is a threat to be reckon with, and since all of Feraligatr moves are affected by it, makes him a beast. Waterfall is a primary stab that tears through anything that doesn't resist it. Rock Slide are for bugs and flying. Ice Punch help deals with dragons and anything else that Waterfall/Rock Slide can't hit. Crunch makes Gengar and Reuniclus run to their mama. However, just like Nidoking, Feraligatr has a pretty mediocre speed, making him get sweeped by faster opponents. However, he has decent defense, and with paralysis from my other pokemon, can help deal with the speed issue.
Weakness:
Electric types normally will be countered by Nidoking, or Heatran. Grass enemies normally will be taken care of by Heatran or Ferrothorn, while faster enemies will hopefully be countered through paralysis.
Threat List
A full threat list will be completed later.
Gut Boosted Conkeldurr hurts alot, and dents almost everything I have. Ferrothorn can "kind of" tank it, but only to a certain extent. Paralyzing this guy is not an option, therefore forcing me to hopefully trap it in Bulk Up with encore, or hopefully roar it away and land a good prediction on when its comming in.
U-Turn and Volt-Switch spammers are incredibly annoying and difficult to deal with. Those Rotom-W volt switchers are stopped in place by Serperior, but they are usually accompanied by Scizor, which will U-Turn my switch-in Heatran, and they'll just bring back Rotom-W or Magnezone. This is incredibly annoying, and not even a battle when they just do this. This problem has been reduced with Ferrothorn, but is still incredibly annoying (especially when your trying to T-Wave them).
Taunters causes alot of problem, forces me to switch around alot. For some reason, the biggest taunter who has given me trouble is Sableye (not Thundurus), and is a pain to take down.
Chansey with Heal Bell/Aromatherapy are annoying. Not much else to say, these guys absolutely ruin my team's strength. Feraligatr is the only one that can take down Chansey, normally overpowering it with Waterfall. Whimsicott likes to use Chansey to trap it though, and normally this leads to easy SmashPass.
