[SET COMMENTS]
Heatran's typing, ability, and solid bulk allow it to function as a switch-in to many common offensive threats including Tapu Lele, Volcarona, and Victini. Magma Storm allows Heatran to trap and KO passive foes such as Toxapex, Blissey, Ting-Lu, and Clodsire, although it must Terastallize to take care of the latter two. Taunt allows it to effectively shut down trapped foes, denying recovery and preventing Toxic after Terastallizing, thus making its trapping capabilities more pronounced. Earth Power allows Heatran to hit Garganacl, Toxapex, and opposing Heatran, and it is a generally safe and accurate option against most trapped foes. Stealth Rock allows Heatran to lay entry hazards, especially in front of a trapped foe or after forcing out a foe, while Toxic is useful for wearing down switch-ins to Heatran such as Mega Gyarados. Tera Grass allows Heatran to shed its weaknesses and gain a unique defensive profile, walling most Pokemon that rely on Ground-type moves to hit it including Mega Charizard Y, Gliscor, and Clodsire. However, Heatran must still be wary when using its Tera, as it becomes more vulnerable to foes like Zapdos and Mega Scizor. Even without Special Attack investment, Heatran still poses a threat to opposing Fire-resistant foes such as Rotom-W and Garchomp, as they cannot switch in too many times without getting worn down. Allies like Volcarona appreciate Heatran pressuring foes like Toxapex and opposing Heatran for them. Heatran's ability to check Tapu Lele is also very useful for allies like Urshifu-R and Iron Valiant, as Tapu Lele is a commonly seen Choice item user, and Heatran's scouting allows teammates to safely double switch in once Heatran forces out Tapu Lele. Defensively, Heatran appreciates allies that can take Ground-type moves for it, reducing its need to Terastallize and thus saving it for a more deserving ally. Partners like Rotom-W, Mega Latias, and Gliscor are all immune to Ground-type moves from the likes of Garchomp and Landorus-T, and the former two can also switch into Water-type moves from foes like Urshifu-R while the latter two switch into Fighting-type moves from foes like Mega Lopunny. In exchange, Heatran covers Grass- and Ice-type moves for them. Heatran also has little means to heal off chip damage due to its lack of instant recovery. Thus, entry hazard removers such as Great Tusk and Landorus-T make for good allies. Finally, Alomomola's Wish support is particularly valuable, as it can instantly heal Heatran while remaining healthy itself, and they also cover each other's weaknesses decently well, with Heatran taking Grass-type moves from Mega Charizard Y while Alomomola takes Water-type moves from Hisuian Samurott.

Heatran occupies a niche as an offensive wallbreaker, especially if opponents assume it is running a defensive set and disregard it as a threat. Heatran's natural bulk also means it can still reliably switch into resisted hits with ease despite not having defensive investment. Magma Storm + Taunt in conjunction with Earth Power allows Heatran to trap and remove foes effectively due to its spike in damage output from its Special Attack investment. Toxic is useful, as it allows Heatran to spread poison on switch-ins like Landorus-T and Alomomola that have pivoting moves to escape Magma Storm, hindering their effectiveness and putting a timer on their HP. Hidden Power Ice is an option to lure Gliscor and Garchomp and remove them for allies, as well as improving Heatran’s matchup against opposing Tera Grass Heatran. Solar Beam in conjunction with Grassium Z allows Heatran to lure and nuke Alomomola, Mega Tyranitar, and Garganacl, OHKOing the former and heavily denting the latter two. Leftovers is useful for recovery, as Heatran has no means of instant recovery; Air Balloon allows it to check opposing Heatran along with foes like Gliscor and Garchomp, threatening massive chip damage or Toxic on them. Tera Grass is useful to check Ground-type move users and also to function as a pest to rain teams in general. Offensive Heatran appreciates pivots like Rotom-W and Landorus-T that can safely bring it in while baiting in Steel-types like Ferrothorn and Corviknight. It also appreciates allies that can switch into Ground- and Fighting-type moves for it, like Tornadus-T, Gliscor, and Zapdos, as they also share checks with Heatran, namely opposing Heatran, Ting-Lu, and Clodsire, and appreciate Heatran chipping or outright removing these checks for them while being useful defensively as well.

Heatran's typing, ability, and solid bulk allow it to function as a switch-in to many common offensive threats including Tapu Lele, Kartana, Tapu Lele, Volcarona, and Victini. Magma Storm allows Heatran to trap and KO passive foes such as Ting-Lu, Toxapex, Blissey, and Clodsire, although it must Terastallize to take care of the latter two. grammar nitpick, the sequence should go Toxapex, Blissey, Ting-Lu, and Clodsire if you desire to use latter two Taunt allows it to effectively shut down trapped foes, denying recovery from the latter three of the aforementioned and and preventing Toxic after Terastallizing thus making its trapping capabilities more pronounced. Earth Power allows Heatran to hit Garganacl, Toxapex, and opposing Heatran, and is a generally safe and accurate option against most trapped foes. Stealth Rock allows Heatran to lay hazards in front of a trapped foe dont rly have to be trapped, just a overall solid rocker, while Toxic is useful for wearing down switch-ins to Heatran such as Baxcalibur and Mega Gyarados. Tera Grass allows Heatran to shed its weaknesses and gain a unique defensive profile, walling most Pokemon that rely on Ground-type moves to hit it including Mega Charizard Y, Mega Diancie u dont rly wall this since it can still moonblast you for solid dmg, Gliscor, and Clodsire. However, Heatran must still be wary when using its Tera, as it becomes more vulnerable to foes like Volcarona and Moltres actually, most volc and molt dislike when heatran teras as they carry movesets walled by it post-Tera, like qd/fthrower/giga/hpground volc or ssands molt. Some better examples would be Zapdos and MSciz instead. Even with its full defensive investment, Heatran still poses a threat to opposing Fire-resistant foes, as they cannot switch in too many times without getting worn down such as?. Leftovers is useful for recovery as Heatran has no means of instant recovery; Air Balloon allows it to check itself along with foes like Gliscor, Baxcalibur, and Garchomp, threatening massive chip damage or Toxic on them. Firium Z is a fun option to nuke certain foes like Gliscor and Clodsire, as well as any other neutral foe that would think to switch in, such as Baxcalibur. Tera Grass is useful to check Ground-type move users, and also to function as a pest to rain teams in general. Timid nature is run to allow Heatran to outspeed offensive Mega Scizor and Mega Banette (cannot find better example, do i just nuke timid?) yes, while Modest misses these benchmarks in exchange for more damage output. Offensive Heatran appreciates pivots like Rotom-W and Landorus-T that can safely bring it in while baiting in Steel-types like Ferrothorn and Corviknight. in general it's best to avoid making direct comparisons to other sets bc it means a reader can't just look at the set they want in isolation
