- Power Gem / Will-O-Wisp / Earth Power
- Stealth Rock

[SET COMMENTS]
Heatran's fantastic defensive typing, great bulk, and great Special Attack make it a powerful entry hazard setter and special wall, able to reliably keep out common hazard removal while checking powerful attackers like Gholdengo, Latios, and Azelf. Desolate Land, on top of boosting Magma Storm to a scary power level even without investment, allows Heatran to switch in against and act as a stopgap to Water-types like Primarina, Ogerpon-W, and Manaphy as well as Primordial Sea Zapdos. Magma Storm notably allows Heatran to trap Flip Turn users like Primarina and Swampert (though it has to fear Earthquake), blocking their pivot then threatening them with Solar Beam. Earth Power, meanwhile, gives Heatran a powerful option to threaten Well-Baked Body variants of Gholdengo and Iron Crown as well as Empoleon, Iron Moth, and opposing Heatran. Power Gem gives Heatran a super effective hit into Zapdos and Moltres, while Will-O-Wisp is an option on bulky sets to neuter would-be answers like Roaring Moon on the switch in. 60 EVs on the bulky spread allow Heatran to outspeed uninvested Gholdengo and Adamant Kingambit with the remaining EVs in Special Defense to more effectively check threats like Azelf, Iron Moth, and Latios; alternatively, it can run an offensive spread with maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature to outspeed and immediately threaten most common Iron Treads sets, as well as bulky variants of Gholdengo, Great Tusk, and Landorus-T.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Fire Blast and Overheat are alternatives to Magma Storm on offensive spreads that trade the passive damage for more accuracy and nuclear power. Flash Cannon seems appealing for powerful secondary STAB, but Steel-type coverage is largely redundant with its other options. Scorching Sands may be tempting, but the burn effect is generally not worth the downgrade in power from Earth Power. Heatran can effectively run several different immunity abilities on its bulky sets: Bulletproof, Volt Absorb, Earth Eater/Levitate, and Water Absorb may all be considered. Heatran can consider running an Iron Defense + Body Press set with Earth Eater or Water Absorb to act as a bulky win condition, but this set suffers from lack of immediate power and is hard to fit on teams. A Magic Guard set with Flare Blitz and Steel Beam may be considered as a powerful mixed wallbreaker, but the presence of bulky Water-types like Manaphy and Swampert make it hard to wield effectively.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Primordial Sea Users**: Primordial Sea users like Ogerpon-W, Barraskewda, and Primarina are all major threats to Heatran, nullifying its Fire-type moves and forcing it out.

**Swampert**: Swampert must be cautious around Solar Beam, but can otherwise completely wall Heatran, directly threatening it with Earthquake and preventing it from making meaningful progress.

**Ground-types**: Bulky Ground-types like Garchomp, non-Fluffy Landorus-T, and Ting-Lu can easily switch in to Heatran and force it out, while Great Tusk and Iron Treads can reliably keep Heatran from getting Stealth Rock on the field with their powerful Earthquakes.
