ORAS OU Help with my OU team please

Team has been doing pretty well for me in OU singles but I would like some suggestions for improvements please. My general strategy is to have a few pokemon which combined can resist most of the current meta by using a suicune, goodra, ferrorthorn core to provide good defensive coverage both physically and specially.

The team was originally built around goodra and it's impressive SpDef and resistances to common special attacking types, followed by heracross and suicune to gain a more balanced defence and offence.

Current weak links are metagross and heatran which are from time to time cycled with alternate pokemon but are usually my go to.

Nigel Thornberry (Ferrothorn) @ Occa Berry
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 204 HP / 4 Atk / 172 Def / 128 SpD
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed

Originally began as my stealth rock setter to help break scarves and dragonite's multiscale, as well as to help deal with talonflame (frequently a major threat to my team)

lowest possible speed to maximise gyro ball damage in order to check fast attackers who are unable to OHKO it with fire or fighting type moves ,power whip for coverage and functions as a decent mixed defender with occa berry preventing most OHKO's from unexpected fire type moves in order to gain time to set up hazards or leech seed. Works well in conjunction with heatran by setting up rocks while eating up the first fire hit before switching to heatran for flash fire boost. Also very useful against mega-diancies not carrying flamethrower who are expecting to magic bounce hazards.

Heracross_XY.gif

Heracross @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Guts
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 8 HP / 252 Atk / 248 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Megahorn
- Close Combat
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake

I required a fast physical attacker to balance out my relatively slow team (i dislike using trick room) and so far heracross has fit the bill especially with choice STAB close combat

current physical sweeper with guts to provide boost from opponents toxic spikes or will-o-wisps from sableye or scald. running max attack and choice band to outspeed most of the unboosted tier (except gale wings talonflame) with moves providing at least neutral coverage against all types.

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

I found that ii needed both a stall counter and physical defensive pokemon not weak to dark or fighting and suicune performs this role very well by being able to heal status conditions with rest while simultaneously having the potential to burn or gain boost while sleeping.
boosted scald deals decent damage amongst even resisted pokemon with burn damage helping to gain additional damage.
Able to easily withstand a guts boosted drain punch from conkeldurr, suicune functions as my physical wall with scald to further cripple non-guts physical attackers and calm mind to boost while up against physical threats.

Goodra_XY.gif

Goodra @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sap Sipper
EVs: 48 HP / 208 Def / 252 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Dragon Tail
- Flamethrower
- Power Whip
- Sludge Bomb

My go to special wall, taking only about 5% damage from mega manectrik stab thunder bolt, usually brought in as a switch from suicune against opponents ferrorthorn and other grass types to gain sap sipper boost from power whip or leech seed.

high defence investment in a attempt to survive some physical attacks and max special defence to make the most use out of the assault vest boost. sludge bomb to attempt to hold it's own against some of the weaker fairy types that switch in on it and the rest for mixed coverage (flamethrower mostly for ferrorthorn and skarmory) dragon tail added to force out boosting pokemon other than clefable and to help rack up stealth rock damage.

Metagross @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Punch
- Zen Headbutt
- Bullet Punch
- Earthquake

current mega running max speed and attack to improve speed matchings, bulkier physical attacker with perfect neutral coverage and has the handy advantage of the tough claws ability on most of it's moves and does not get destroyed by knock off. Usually partnered with heatran switching to gain boost from attempted will-o-wisps on heatran while preserving metagross' vital attack.

my main counter to fairy and dragon types
heatran.gif

Heatran @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
- Earth Power
- Stone Edge
- Substitute
- Flamethrower

due to the physical nature of my team will-o-wisp is a large threat as well as most of my pokemon being destroyed by gale wings talonflame, heatran provides a counter for both through flash fire and it's defensive typing. frequently gaining boosts from the switch due to the general special fire weakness on my team allowing for either the substitute on the switch to make use of the boosted flametrower which deals significant damage to those not specially defensive thanks to heatrans very high special attack. Stone edge is provided to deal with talonflame, charizard and volcarona who resist it's other attacks and to provide a method to deal damage to specially defensive pokemon such as chansey.

Any help is much appreciated for both improvements or substitutions.

Hi there nice team! I have a few suggestions to improve your team a little bit and some general tips on teambuilding! First I would like to point out that your descriptions for your pokemon need to be a little bit longer as they need to be at least 3 sentences in length. I would check out this thread to avoid your RMT from being locked. You also have not provided a teambuilding process so it is kind of hard to figure out what ideas you were working with especially since this team really does not have a clear goal in mind. Anyways I guess I will give a few suggestions on some sets since some appear to be a bit out of place.

First I would change bullet punch to meteor mash, ice punch to grass knot, and earthquake to hammer arm on metagross. Earthquake really does not provide any extra coverage that hammer arm does not plus with hammer arm you are no longer walled by ferrothorn. Bullet punch really is not too great on Mgross imo because you lose out on the wallbreaking capabilities that it provides with meteor mash. Bulky grounds are not too much of a problem for your team and gliscor/lando-t get crushed by repeated meteor mashes so grass knot is the superior option. This allows metagross to break hippo and bulky waters which give your team trouble since your only other option is burning them with suicune.

Next I would change ferrothorn to the set below:
Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
This set allows ferro to reliably take the hits from the latis, fairies, and strong water type attacks along with checking a good portion of physical attackers in the tier. Ferrothorn wants all the recovery it can get so running occa berry is probably not a good idea especially since ferro is not really doing anything back to take advantage of that free turn. I would only use resist berries as lures to take out certain threats to your team or for your win condition to sweep or put it in work.

Lastly I would change heatran to zapdos. A big problem with your team is that you lack a way of removing hazards which will wear down your team eventually breaking your core apart by forcing switches and offensive pressure. Zapdos can provide defog support which will alleviate this issue and prevent you from succumbing to said pressure. Zap still provides a nice bird check and also gives you a ground immunity which your team previously lacks which is pretty big in this metagame at the moment. I would recommend using this set below. Ev's let you outspeed jolly bisharp while retaining the bulk to check flying types and heatwave allows you to threaten ferrothorn so it cannot set up hazards on you.
Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 152 Def / 108 Spe
Bold Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave

There are my suggestions hope I helped! Have fun laddering with the team n_n

Thank you for the advice ^_^ the heatran was originally added to pair with ferrorthorn and as a counter for Talonflame which has been the bane of most my teams for quite some time now, but I suppose suicune alone should be able to cover it.
Thanks especially for the metagross advice, since oras has came out I've been having trouble choosing a mega that I and keep chaging it ,so i've only recently decided that metagross is the a good fit so I haven't had a long eneough time to fine tweak it.

Thanks again for the help :)

Hey chilledone ,
Really like the attempt to innovate in OU crocune and heracross are both uncommon pokemon in OU and I think the could be used more often. Below I will give you some suggestions to improve/change your team. Hopefully this will help you out.
  • Firstly, I agree with Mur and I think that Zapdos and the improved ferro set will help you team out.
  • Secondly, I would change Heracross' ability out for the Moxie ability because this will help you clean up late game. You have to predict the incoming statuses a bit better though which might be harder to do. Please add knock off to this because this will deal with incoming ghost types beter. I added stone edge as well because the extra power is always a good option.(set below)
  • Change Ev's on the Goodra set to max HP, The Defensive investments won't do much for you and most fairy/ice pokemon or moves are special anyways. (Except Azumarill, but you won't stop a play rough though) (set below) It is important to remember that Goodra is not a special wall, and more of a tank due to its lack of recovery so it would work better to invest In a little special attack so you team packs more of a punch.
  • Milotic > suicuine I really like milotics on your team because it could act as a status absorber and deal with threats using a combination of scald and haze. Therefore, I would suggest the set below to implement into your team because it covers more of your team weaknesses.
  • Add Rock Polish or Agility to Mega Metagross This will increase your sweeping capabilities since you out-speed most of the tier. and you can use the much more powerful meteor mash instead of BP.

My main issue still even with my new team hasn't been hazards but instead is still swords dance talonflame, does anybody have any recommendation for a talonflame counter instead of metagross or heatran/zapdos?
