so hey guys...

i recently joined this site, but im a wee bit lost. i couldn't find any sort of introduction place (or a general discussion thread for that matter), so i suppose you guys just don't have one/them.

anyways, i'm new, both to the site and to the realm of competitive pokemon, and seeing as how i just missed that tutoring 101 thing, i was hoping someone could help me out with a few questions i have? (i've read the guides, but i have a few questions in particular). so if any vet who's willing to help out a noob could send me a PM, or just reply to this read, i would really appreciate it.

The reason we don't have introduction threads is because they don't really promote discussion. It's basically a post like yours followed by "Welcome to Smogon, read the rules and enjoy your stay" x1000.

If you have questions about Pokemon (competitive or otherwise), there is a thread in Stark Mountain called ask a simple question, get a simple answer.

well thank you for the quick response. i will be sure to check that thread.

just wondering, how long does it usually take before the tutoring thing opens again?

A while, you'd be better off joining the irc channel and getting those dudes to help you out with pokemon related questions.

@ala

what a coincidence! i recently got mirc for..another pokemon site (omitting the name in case advertising is illegal), so I could most definitely exercise this option. Where is the irc information located at?

The tutoring opens every couple months or so. However, the best way to learn online pokemon is just testing things out on the ladder and seeing what works. Once you get 15 posts you will be eligible for a tutor next round. In the meantime, hang around. Many people here are willing to help if you just ask.

I don't think advertising other sites is that illegal because once people find Smogon they never come back. :)

@toshimelonhead

(btw, *very* interesting name ;P)
hahah, thanks. It was serebii, but they have a fairly nice community so I've been hopping (read: ctrl+tab) between there and here. Let's not start any flame wars about there please! Anyways, I'm sort of stuck in a tier limbo, because I have a couple of pokemon that I *absolutely* want on my team, and one of them is NU according to here, while everything else is BL/OU. But hopefully the nice people in the IRC channel can help me out :P Speaking of IRC...

@Ala

thanks a bunch!

Actually I use serebii for ingame stuff (goes to other tab for updates). That's what I thought you might have been using lol. Nothing beats smogon for online battling though.

well i sent you a VM inviting you to ask your questions...

but i'll just go ahead and say that you should use whatever pokemon you want to use in OU.

there is nothing wrong with using NU/UU pokemon up there, and often they work better, because people aren't expecting to face them and aren't prepared. off the top of my head, Jumpluff is one such pokemon. one of the best leads in the game imho.

@Deschain

Sent you a VM (took me a while to figure out what that was xP)

@Guy with aku for avatar (sorry, your name is too long :< )

Err...I'm not sure if that's intentional, but you basically just redirected me to the forum main page. Maybe I'm not as super-advanced as the rest of you, but one of the reasons why I made this topic in the first place was that I was absolutely lost and had no idea where I should start "lurking" to find information. I did read through the guides on the website's main page, but I still had a couple of questions unanswered that I felt were a bit too complex for the "ask a simple question, get a simple answer" thread.

Sorry, we don't promote these types of threads. Lurk around the boards, read rules, and join in discussions as you see topics you want to contribute to.
