[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 7 onwards
**Price Range**: 3-4 points
**Overview**: Hisuian Typhlosion is one of the best wallbreakers in its price range. Boasting a tried and true STAB type combination, strong attacks such as nuclear-boosted Eruption, and serviceable stats to wallbreak, it can be solid value on teams where it fits well. It can also have some flexibility with some utility options and its surprisingly solid resistance profile; however, Hisuian Typhlosion is mostly miscast as anything but a wallbreaker. All this being said, a Stealth Rock weakness, its preference for other items over Heavy-Duty Boots, its weakness to common typings, and its mediocre at best stats outside Special Attack cause its price and draft position.

Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Hisuian Typhlosion can use its near-unresisted and powerful STAB move combination to weaken teams. Choice Scarf can be used to get the jump on foes despite its natural Speed, and Choice Specs can be powerful enough to even invalidate many resistances. In rarer instances, it can use Calm Mind to avoid being Choice locked and set up. Often, these sets are led to avoid Stealth Rock damage, create mind games involving its item, and use Frisk to identify the opposing lead's item.
**Utility**: Hisuian Typhlosion can sometimes serve as an effective status spreader with multiple methods of burning foes. It can also use its typing to resist a fair amount of foes and perform some roles such as spinblocking if well executed.
Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Eruption, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Shadow Ball, Overheat, Infernal Parade, Lava Plume
**Setup Moves**: Calm Mind, Flame Charge
**Utility Moves**: Will-O-Wisp, Substitute, Roar
**Coverage**: Focus Blast, Extrasensory
Niche Moves
========
**Solar Beam**: Hisuian Typhlosion can struggle to break bulkier Water- and Rock-type foes and may use Power Herb + Solar Beam as a solution.
**Hex**: Although it lacks the chance to inflict burn, Hex is stronger than Infernal Parade. In matchups where Will-O-Wisp or teammates are the means of spreading status, Hex becomes the preferred attack.
**Physical Coverage**: Although it has poor special coverage, Hisuian Typhlosion has a subpar albeit usable Attack as well as coverage options such as Earthquake, Wild Charge, and Iron Head to target foes that can usually check it.
Common Items
========
**Choice Scarf**: Choice Scarf allows Hisuian Typhlosion to outpace most foes and threaten them with powerful hits. This is in particular strong to use Eruption at full power and pick up KOs as a cleaner.
**Choice Specs**: Choice Specs is used to further enhance the wallbreaking of Hisuian Typhlosion, allowing it to seriously damage would-be checks. Choice Specs is favorable in matchups where it has a more workable Speed into an opposing team.
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots allows Hisuian Typhlosion to avoid the entry hazards that hinder it heavily and also allows freedom of move selection.
Niche Items
========
**Air Balloon**: Air Balloon can be useful to gain a very helpful Ground immunity. It is in particular good on utility sets, as it can allow Hisuian Typhlosion to more effectively spinblock common entry hazard removers such as Great Tusk and Iron Treads pretty reliably.
**Leftovers**: The passive healing of Leftovers is appreciated on sets that use Substitute.
**Eject Pack**: Paired with Overheat, Eject Pack can be a useful means of maintaining momentum while dealing damage.
**Power Herb**: Power Herb in conjunction with Solar Beam can allow Hisuian Typhlosion to KO or weaken Water- and Rock-type checks.
Tera
========
Hisuian Typhlosion is not an amazing secondary Tera Captain, but it can certainly benefit from the mechanic. Enhancing its Fire and Ghost STAB moves can improve the output of Choice item sets even further. It lacks coverage pretty severely, so some other useful offensive and defensive Tera typings that provide helpful coverage could be useful, including Tera Grass, Water, and Fairy.
Draft Strategy
========
Hisuian Typhlosion is a budget wallbreaker that is taken when teams lack some punch or specifically benefit from the foes it can take on with its typing. Bringing it is incredibly matchup dependent, but against teams that struggle resisting its STAB types, it can thrive.
**Entry Hazard Removal**: With a weakness to Stealth Rock and with Choice items usually being optimal, having good entry hazard removal allows Hisuian Typhlosion to erupt off the bench. Hazard removal options such as Great Tusk, Quaquaval, and Terapagos all make great partners.
**Reliable Pivots**: Hisuian Typhlosion has a number of common weaknesses and subpar bulk. Reliable pivots such as Landorus-T, Rotom-W, and Zapdos pair well by taking hits for it and bringing it in safely.
**Strong Grass-types**: Grass-type teammates are incredibly complementary both offensively to break Hisuian Typhlosion's checks and defensively to cover its weaknesses. Ogerpon, Meowscarada, and Rillaboom are excellent teammates.
**Cleaners**: Hisuian Typhlosion is good at weakening walls and forcing KOs, but it does not usually have the combination of Speed and power to end games. Fast cleaners like Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon, and Darkrai can finish the job for its team.
Checks and Counters
========
**Special Walls**: Bulkier special walls are able to check Hisuian Typhlosion, as it has limited coverage and relies on items to deal enough damage. Primarina and Heatran are examples of good checks, but even some bulkier foes that take neutral damage to Eruption such as Hisuian Goodra and Ting-Lu can check it.
**Entry Hazards**: Being prone to all entry hazards, especially Stealth Rock, makes them an effective way to wear Hisuian Typhlosion down. This is especially the case because it very commonly does not use Heavy-Duty Boots.
**Faster Foes**: Due to its middling Speed, there are many faster foes that can check Hisuian Typhlosion, and there are many common Speed-boosting Pokemon that can outpace Choice Scarf sets. Greninja, Roaring Moon, and Ogerpon-W effectively serve as checks with their Speeds and typing.
**Priority**: An easy way to keep Hisuian Typhlosion in check is through the use of common super effective priority attacks to strike it first. Palafin's Jet Punch and the plethora of strong Sucker Punch users in the format are all reliable checks, although Sucker Punch users sometimes need to outplay Will-O-Wisp.
