Hoopa-U (REVAMP) (0/2)

Status
Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]

  • Protect being the most common move in the DOU metagame, makes moves such as Hyperspace Fury/Hole helpful with many teams
  • Hoopa-U usually holds a threatening presence as a result of its diverse movepool, and ability to ignore both Protect, and Substitute
  • Common threats such as Incineroar, and Landorus-T shut Hoopa-U down, due to typing, intimidate, and U-Turn
  • Hoopa has good special bulk, but low defense, which is further weakened by hyperspace fury, making it weak to physical attackers

Moves
========

  • Trick Room causes the turn-by-turn movement order to reverse, offering support for slow Pokemon
  • Hyperspace Fury is Hoopa-U's strongest STAB, and as a result will often be the primary method of dealing damage
  • Hyperspace Hole is one of Hoopa-U's STABs, and it has plenty of potential too be used as a "goto" move in battle depending on the weaknesses in an opponent's team, and its utilization of intimidate
  • Protects it from damage, and scouts opponent's moves
Set Details
========

  • Magician allows Hoopa-U to take advantage of a meta so heavily filled with "pinch berries," by not only rendering opposing Pokemon with 1 less option to regen HP, but also allowing the user to regen HP instead.
  • Sitrus Berry assists in general longevity, more specifically against Pokemon such as Tapu Koko, now only being able to 3HKO with Thunderbolt/Dazzling Gleam, as well as surviving attacks in order to set up Trick Room
  • Survives Choice Scarf Victini U-Turn
  • Survives Life Orb Tapu Lele Moonblast
  • Minimized speed for full TR teams
  • Survives Mega Charizard Y Overheat in Sun
  • Avoids 2HKO from LO Tapu Koko Thunderbolt
  • Survives Choice Scarf Victini U-turn
  • OHKOes all Mega Gengar with Hyperspace Hole
  • Dump in Atk
Usage Tips
========

  • Set Trick Room to support Hoopa-U's teammates and help it fire off attacks earlier on in the following turns
  • Trick Room shouldn't be seen as a required move when not set, as sometimes simply attacking can be more beneficial
  • When burned, or intimidated Hyperspace Hole should be used in most situations, excluding when Hyperspace Fury might be supereffective
  • Though other Trick Room setters struggle to keep offensive momentum after setting Trick Room, leaving Hoopa-U in after using the move prevents foes from being able to effectively use Protect or Wide Guard against its allies
  • Though Hoopa-U does have a moderate amount of bulk, it struggles to switch in the majority of the time, do to its lack of resistances
  • Once Hoopa-U's item is used up, avoid attacking too recklessly—stealing the wrong item with Magician, like a Choice Scarf or an Assault Vest, can greatly hinder its effectiveness.

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that have naturally low to mediocre, speed, such as Amoonguss, or Celesteela greatly appreciate the reverse in turn-order
  • Mega-Camerupt, and Volcanion are two prominent attackers, that take advantage of the speed control, while Pokemon such as Amoonguss become a more threatening support option due Spore now being more likely to be used before an opponent can make an attack
  • Fake out users such as Scrafty, or Incineroar enable Hoopa-U to setup trick room, with much less friction, essentially disabling threats to it
  • Due to Hoopa-U's lack of consistent recovery and bulk, a second Trick Room setter like Cresselia, Diancie or Porygon2 is necessary for full Trick Room-based builds
  • Pokemon with access to fire type move, such as the aforementioned are necessary in allowing Hoopa-U to succeed in its roll due to pokemon such as Genesect, or Mega-Scizor being so threatening to it
  • Due to low defensive stats, Hoopa-U greatly appreciates intimidate users like Incineroar, or Landorus-T

Moves
========
  • Hyperspace Fury is Hoopa's strongest STAB attack, and best option against Metagross, Aegislash, opposing Hoopa, and others
  • Hyperspace Hole is Hoopa's goto attack for Mega Gengar, and applies neutral damage to most opposing Pokemon that would otherwise be resisted were Hoopa using Hyperspace Fury
  • Gunk Shot covers Fairies, and gives Hoopa another physical option
  • Protects it from damage, and scouts opponent's moves
Set Details
========
  • Solidifies OHKO on Mega Metagross, and Aegislash with HyperSpace Fury
  • Survives Mega Charizard Y Overheat in Sun
  • Avoids 2HKO from LO Tapu Koko Thunderbolt
  • Survives Choice Scarf Victini U-turn
  • OHKOes all Mega Gengar with Hyperspace Hole
  • Dump in Atk
  • 0 Spe IV mention for full TR teams
Usage Tips
========

  • Try to hide the fact that you are not running trick room, in order to catch the opponent off guard with Gunk Shot
  • When burned, you should be more inclined to use Hyperspace Hole instead of Hyperspace fury
  • Do to lack of investment into defensive stats, Hoopa will find trouble switching into attacks the majority of the time
  • If knocked off, attack carefully, as Hoopa may end up taking a item with Magician that hinders it
  • Hyperspace moves unlike Z moves, break protect, as opposed to deal damage through it, as a result hoopa's partner can also attack the same target, were it to move after Hoopa
  • Due to Hoopa's shaky defensive stats, it can sometimes be rather easy to take out, especially physically. As a result, Hoopa is especially appreciative of speed control, so a TW/icy wind user is much appreciated in team compositions with Hoopa

Team Options
========

  • Intimidate users, such as Incineroar, and Landorus-T alleviate Hoopa's weakness to Physical attacks
  • Checks to these pokemon are also a necessity, so pokemon such as Kyurem-B, and water types, like Volcanion, or Milotic are very useful as teammates
  • Reliable speed control users such as Zapdos, or Suicune are greatly appreciated by Hoopa
  • Pokemon with access to fire type moves, such as Mega Charizard-Y, or Victini make it more difficult for Genesect to U-Turn off of Hoopa
  • Fairy types can be hard for Hoopa to perform against, so as a result Steel types such as Mega Metagross, or Genesect are useful as offensive partners

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Fightinium Z Focus Blast can be used to cover threats Hoopa would otherwise be walled against, such as Tyranitar, or Incineroar
  • Choice Scarf with LO's moves + HP Ice, performs similarly to LO, while also catching opponents off guard with HP ice, and offering the ability to OHKO Landorus-T
  • Psychic Seed / Misty Seed

Checks and Counters
===================

**Intimidate and Burns**: Incineroar, Landorus-T, Scrafty

**Dark-types**: Dark types wall the standard Hoopa-U set, due to immunity of Psychic-type attacks, and resistance to Dark-type attacks

**Bug-types**: Despite its decent bulk, Hoopa-U is incredibly threatened by Bug-type attacks thanks to its 4x weakness to the type. As a prominent pivoting move, U-turn is carried by most common Choice Scarf users, including Genesect, Landorus-T, and Victini, which can all OHKO Hoopa-U with the move. However, due to their reliance on the Speed advantage, none can defeat Hoopa-U if it has set Trick Room.

**Strong Physical Attackers**: As a Pokemon with skewed defenses, despite its investment in Defense, Hoopa-U greatly fears strong physical attackers, including Mega Metagross, and Tapu Bulu. Hyperspace Fury lowering Hoopa-U's Defense only serves to exacerbate this issue.

**Taunt and Fake Out-users**: Incineroar, Scrafty, and Mew all have access to Fake out which make it very difficult for Hoopa-U to set up Trick Room. Taunt renders the target incapable of using non-attacking move, such as trick room

Not a full check, but I have a few things for you to work on. Talked with QC briefly and we'd like two sets: LO Gunk Shot and Offensive TR.

LO Gunk Shot:
[SET]
name: All-out Attacker
move 1: Hyperspace Fury
move 2: Hyperspace Hole
move 3: Gunk Shot
move 4: Protect
item: Life Orb
ability: Magician
nature: Hasty
evs: 224 Atk / 32 SpA / 252 Spe
  • Max Speed for neutral-natured Landorus-T and all non-Scarf Tapu Bulu
  • OHKOes Tapu Koko with -1 Gunk Shot
  • OHKOes all Mega Metagross, Genesect, and Aegislash with +0 Hyperspace Fury
  • Dump in SpA for stronger Hyperspace Hole
  • Hidden Power Ice + 128 SpA mention in Moves/Set Details

Offensive TR:
[SET]
name: Trick Room
move 1: Hyperspace Fury
move 2: Hyperspace Hole
move 3: Trick Room
move 4: Protect
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Magician
nature: Brave
evs: 192 HP / 192 Atk / 104 Def / 20 SpA
  • Survives Mega Charizard Y Overheat in Sun
  • Avoids 2HKO from LO Tapu Koko Thunderbolt
  • Survives Choice Scarf Victini U-turn
  • OHKOes all Mega Gengar with Hyperspace Hole
  • Dump in Atk
  • 0 Spe IV mention for full TR teams

Other Options should be:
  • Fightinium Z Focus Blast
  • Choice Scarf with LO's moves + HP Ice
  • Psychic Seed / Misty Seed

More generally speaking, try your best to write the points in the context of the whole analysis instead of individually. There are a couple examples of your bullet points contradicting each other, and the Overview in particular is pretty oversold on the merits of Hoopa-U. It's okay right now, but your overview makes it sound pretty great. Fix those changes and take another critical look at what you have now and I'll take another look.
