Hydreigon is a potent stallbreaker that can take advantage of common defensive Pokemon like Galarian Corsola, Toxapex, and Ferrothorn. Dark Pulse is Hydreigon's most spammable STAB move, as the tier has limited Dark-type switch-ins, most of which lack recovery or can be broken through by other means. It becomes Max Darkness while Hydreigon is Dynamaxed, which has the useful effect of lowering foes' Special Defense so that Hydreigon can break through them more easily. Substitute is helpful to ease prediction, shield Hydreigon from status moves, prevent Ditto from revenge killing it, and waste foes' Dynamax turns. It can be freely set up against defensive Pokemon that are unable to break it in one hit, such as Toxapex and Rotom-W, as well as Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Tyranitar, and Mandibuzz should they lack the appropriate coverage for Hydreigon. Earth Power hits common Dark-type switch-ins like Zacian-C, Tyranitar, and Zamazenta-C super effectively. Leftovers alleviates Hydreigon's lack of recovery and increases the number of times it can use Substitute.
Hydreigon fits mainly on bulky offense teams that are looking for a way to pressure physical walls like Galarian Corsola; it appreciates teammates that can lend it the proper support. Pivots like Rotom-H, Corviknight, and Galarian Darmanitan can bring Hydreigon in safely via Volt Switch and U-turn, giving it more opportunities to wallbreak. Quagsire, Hippowdon, and Arcanine can check Zacian-C consistently for Hydreigon. Ghost-types like Galarian Corsola and Aegislash are good answers to the Fighting-types that trouble it, and Steel-types like Zacian-C and Aegislash also have excellent type synergy. Hydreigon mainly struggles against offensive teams, so revenge killers like Choice Scarf Ditto and Sand Rush Excadrill make for good partners. Sticky Web support from Ribombee and Shuckle can also aid its matchup against these teams by invalidating would-be revenge killers like Zacian-C, Eternatus, Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan, and Dragapult.
