Magearna is the cornerstone of defensive utility and premier Spikes user. It can fit on practically any playstyle, capable of dealing with metagame staples like Lunala and Raging Bolt while having a ton of role compression. Latiasite is the most common item (or Mega Stone), as the Ground immunity gained by Levitate allows it to switch into Pokemon like Dragonite, (AC) Arceus-Ground, and Pinsirite Great Tusk and threaten them out. Sablenite is useful for not only granting amazing boosts in both defensive stats but also letting Magearna bounce back hazards from Garganacl and other Magearna. Manectite, in combination with a Bold nature, is used on more offensive teams, as with Intimidate it can deal with common Physical attackers like Arceus and Regieleki, letting it pack valuable role compression. Ice Beam gives consistent damage into the Pokemon that it’s supposed to check like Raging Bolt and Eternatus, as well as threatening out Ground-types like Great Tusk and Hippowdon for non-Latiasite sets, while Fleur Cannon hits harder into non-resists and can OHKO Altarianite Dragonite and Regieleki but leaves Magearna fairly weak after use. Pain Split gives Magearna some sort of recovery, allowing it to go the distance during longer games. Magearna is an amazing hazard setter with Spikes, as it fares well into common hazard removal such as Regieleki and Mandibuzz, and can wear down Pokemon like Hippowdon and Eternatus for teammates such as Regieleki and Urshifu-RS, while Encore can disrupt common set-up sweepers such as Calm Mind Arceus forms and Dragonite.
Frailer wallbreakers like Urshifu-RS, Ceruledge, and Spectrier appreciate Magearna giving them slow pivoting, allowing them to consistently break the opposing team without worrying about switching in. Blue Orb Kilowattrel and Water-types like Urshifu-RS and Arceus-Water can pressure Ground-types like Hippowdon and Arceus-Ground that would threaten out non-Latiasite sets with ease, and can also deal with Fire-types like Arcanine-Hisui and Ceruledge that would give Magearna trouble. Hearthflame Tusk is a really big problem for Magearna, as it can block Volt Switch and threaten even Latiasite sets out, so special attackers like Calm Mind Arceus-Ground and Killowattrel are great teammates. Due to Magearna’s constant switching, it can get easily worn down by Spikes chip without Latiasite, so hazard removal like Regieleki and Great Tusk are great partners for Magearna.
