Alright, let's jump to it! UU was a favorite tier last gen, and so now that it's 5th Gen, time to jump in. I know I'm notoriously bad at making teams, but I've found success with the team pasted below. So, let's get to it: the thought process!
*Fun fact: the team is actually composed of 5 females!
Darmanitan (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Flare Blitz
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- U-turn
*Jedi comments: "Darmanitan, the crazed orangutan. Useful for scouting if I decide to lead, useful for destroying foes weakened or foes naturally weak to physical attacks. I originally had Superpower over Earthquake for the Chansey in the tier, but now that it's gone, the Nidoking and Nidoqueen are priorities, especially since Rhyperior might not get the chance to eliminate them. As for the other two moves, STAB is a necessity while Rock Slide ensures Moltres doesn't become a problem."
Zoroark (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Illusion
EVs: 40 Atk / 216 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Dark Pulse
- Grass Knot
- Flamethrower
- Sucker Punch
*Jedi comments: "As it stands, Zoroark is...kinda underwhelming. Sure, Sucker Punch is useful for picking off weakened foes (and was chosen due to the fear of Scarfed Victini), and it is great leading off with what many people might believe is Rhyperior. But as it stands, it doesn't score many KOs, even with entry hazards set up. I do appreciate the wide range of attacks it has, but frankly, I'm seriously considering replacing this girl."
Rhyperior (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Solid Rock
EVs: 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake
- Megahorn
*Jedi comments: "It seems Rhyperior seems to be getting a lot of flak for being severely unbalanced in its stat distribution. Posh, I say. The gal is fantastic in her own right, as she fulfills her role in setting up Rocks and threatening those who stay in with a powerful Earthquake. Rock Blast was chosen over Stone Edge in order to break Substitute. It can be rather inconsistent in damage, but with many Pokes hiding behind Substitutes, i figured I'd give it a shot to make sure Rhyperior isn't used as set up bait. As for the EV spread, well...I'm considering adjusting it. As it stands, Empoleon is a big threat to the team, so if I invest the right amount to outspeed the standard specially defensive set..."
Mew @ Leftovers
Trait: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP / 80 SDef / 176 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Will-O-Wisp
- Softboiled
- Taunt
*Jedi comments: "The first time I freely used the kitty (since I never played Ubers in 4th Gen). Mew is awesome. You want to burn the kitty? Have a taste of your own medicine with Synchronize or Will-O-Wisp! Taunt breaks up the notion of bulky Pokemon recovering their health, sweepers setting up, entry hazards getting set...Psychic is obligatory STAB, and Mew can get away with it: the only Dark-type it has to fear is Houndoom. Otherwise, its a swift Will-O-Wisp to shut down most physical attackers. Of course, Mew enjoys a yummy egg, which is why Softboiled is chosen."
Roserade (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Leaf Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Toxic Spikes
- Sleep Powder
*Jedi comments: "An in-game teammate in 4th Gen, Roserade is a beautiful rose. Not wanting to get wrecked by Toxic Spikes, I decided to get that particular hazard out of the way with her Poison-typing. She sets up Toxic Spikes on her own, but to be honest, I haven't really found the time to set them up safely. Sleep Powder shuts down counters while Leaf Storm and Sludge Bomb provide the STAB moves necessary."
Milotic (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Marvel Scale
EVs: 252 HP / 248 Def / 8 Spd
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Dragon Tail
- Recover
- Ice Beam
*Jedi comments: "Just like Roserade, Milotic was a teammate on an in-game team, except it was in 3rd Gen. In any case, I've always known her beauty was just one of her gifts. She serves as an efficient wall, bolstered by the weakening of physical attackers thanks to Mew and her own ability, Marvel Scale (though I'd prefer to avoid getting her statused with poison). That said, she has her own way of inflicting burns thanks to Scald. Dragon Tail was chosen to phaze opponents, but I am considering Toxic or Haze. Ice Beam is here to get a hit on Grass-types and Dragon-types."
Next post describes current threats. Any comments though, don't hesitate to post!
Whenever I make a team, I look for a Pokemon I like in a tier. Pikachu in NU, for example, Thundurus (when it was OU) in OU. So, UU had a lot of Pokemon I liked, but since 4th gen, a certain mermaid has existed there, and she's always had my heart.
Next, I looked around the tier for something I'd never had a chance to use. I found a certain kitten that had inexplicably fallen from the Gods' Tier. Whatever the case in deciding to let us mere mortals use it, I've found the kitty to be a great team member.
That settled me reasonably well with walling capabilities. Still, a major staple in any team is the ability to set entry hazards, at the very least, Stealth Rock. Wanting to go with something that had some oomph, I found another Pokemon I'd been wanting to try. Powerful, a great ability, and an appreciated typing, I went with the drilling rhino.
Knowing the the rhino's primary job was to set up Rocks, I looked for another physical presence on the team. At the same time, I knew I needed something that could outspeed certain opponents, scout, and hit just as hard, all in one. I settled on the crazed orangutan.
Hmm...Water- and Fire-types. The trio is completed with a Grass-type. Knowing that Toxic Spikes like to pop up in the tier, I decided to go with Grass / Poison-type, one that could lay up another entry hazard (Toxic Spikes) and could hit hard on the special side. In addition, she would also serve as a sleep inducer.
Finally, I pondered the last member of the team. I noticed the need for something with priority, yet also wanted something that could be flexible in its offensive choices. Noting a certain trickery fox in the tier, I decided to give it a shot to see how it would turn out.
