In-game Return

For all I know, this may be too simple a question, but what do you do when your cartridge pokemon needs to use the move Return? For some pokemon it's a simple manner of replacing it with another, similar move (e.g. Snorlax can use Body Slam over Return) but for UU pokemon such as Dodrio or Linoone, there are no such viable options. So what can these pokemon do for powerful normal type moves?

there is a relatively easy way to get lots of return tms...you get one ingame in r/s/e, and one per week if you show a man in pacifilidog town a happy pokemon.

alternately...slash, secret power, headbutt all have their merits. dodrio is limited to secret power, and the base power is questionable, basically the same as an unSTABed return...but the chance to paralyze, crit or flinch the opponent can be quite useful. if you're not willing to use your return tm, explore some of the other physical attack options they have, because they can work sometimes...

Heh, Secret Power is actually really useful. On something like Dunsparce it can be extremely deadly, since if you happen to be in the part of D/P where it's that snowy place, with Serene Grace, Secret power has an extremely unfair freezing chance with 60%...

eh...I was thinking more along the lines of using Frustration instead and then giving it a bitter herb before battle.

Or just make your poke happy and use return? o.o
If you're using frustration as an option, why not just max your happiness and use return? XD

Maxing happiness isn't too hard if you're training the Pokemon (vitamins and leveling up boost it quite a bit). Massages also don't hurt.

Bitter Revival Herbs plus lots of fainting is usually faster if your Pokemon is already trained and at a desirable level. Only reason to use Frustration over Return IMO.

I know, but what if after you EV trained it you kept it in your box all the time when you're not using it and its happiness was always reset to zero over time?

When it's kept in your box its happiness doesn't decrease. Its happiness just stays the exact same as it was when you put it in there.

Uh...I use berries. This is easy in Emerald because you can clone them. I haven't yet tested to see whether my Snorlax will lose max happiness when I Pal Park it, but if he does - I'm lazy, so I'll probably give it Double Edge or Body Slam instead.

I was thinking about Secret Power... if you can't get the Emerald tutor for Body Slam, it's easily the next best thing (paralyzes in wi-fi!)

You can also use Strength if it learns it. The only reason why Strength isn't used competitively is because Return outclasses it in move power.

i actually prefer secret power though...that 30% effect rate is nice...no matter what the effect is, it can't hurt you. and the loss of 10 BP, or 15 with STAB if you're using a normal type (which this thread seems to imply) is made up for more often than not...

Common myth.

Pokemon don't lose happiness from being kept in boxes.

the easiest way to build happiness in my opinion is to go to fuego ironworks, and tape down one of your arrow keys opposing one of those tiles with arrows on them. Every time you go forward and hit one, you get spun back to the wall, then you do it again and again, until your pokemon has enough happiness. That's how I usually evolve my espeons/umbreons
