This is a concise version of the Team Options and Counters sections:
------------------------------
TEAM OPTIONS

Stealth Rock is very useful to combat the Flying-types that love switching into Infernape, as well as netting some important KOs; for instance, Nasty Plot Grass Knot now has a chance to OHKO 252 / 0 Gyarados. It also deters repeated switching, which can cause Infernape to fall to Life Orb recoil before it KOes an opponent.

A strong Pursuit user will severely dent many of Infernape’s other counters and checks, such as Starmie, Latias, Cresselia, and even Tentacruel, despite taking only neutral damage. Scizor, Metagross, Heracross, and Tyranitar can all fulfill this role, but be cautious with Tyranitar, whose Sand Stream ability wears down Infernape very quickly.

Celebi and Starmie are also good teammates for Infernape. The former counters most bulky Water-types and Ground-types that trouble Infernape, while the latter resists two of its weaknesses and lures in Dark- and Bug-type attacks to buy Infernape a switch-in opportunity. This luring strategy is not as necessary for offensive teams, but can be an advantage for balanced teams that have trouble against stall teams.

Infernape’s frailty also renders it vulnerable to faster Pokémon, Choice Scarfers, or priority attacks. Fortuitously, quicker Pokémon are largely dealt with by Pursuit, thanks to weaknesses (Gengar, Latias, Azelf, and Starmie) or poor defenses (Jolteon, Ambipom, and Sceptile). Priority attackers are trickier to handle. Despite Infernape resisting most common priority attacks, such as Bullet Punch, Ice Shard, and Sucker Punch, it still loses around 40% to Scizor's Choice Band Bullet Punch, and is 2HKOed by Lucario’s ExtremeSpeed (possible OHKO after a Defense drop from Close Combat). A defensive Zapdos effectively counters Lucario and Scizor, and also checks Water-types who trouble Infernape.

Understanding Infernape’s role in your team and when to bring it out is also important. Offensive teams enjoy Infernape’s ability to weaken walls early game with Swords Dance or Nasty Plot. In this case, Infernape pairs well with Gyarados, as both attract bulky Water-types and Zapdos as counters, and weakening these counters can enable a later sweep. A more balanced team, however, might have only one or two sweepers besides Infernape. In this case it is best to save it for late game, since the additional defenses of the team should allow it to wear down Infernape’s counters promptly.

COUNTERS

Water-types are prime counters to Infernape, resisting Fire-type attacks and hitting back with STAB super effective attacks. Starmie can outspeed and OHKO Infernape and Recover off any damage taken. Vaporeon has high HP and decent Special Defense and takes only 60 Base Power from Grass Knot. Suicune and Milotic have great defenses also, although they need a reasonable Special Defense investment to take Nasty Plot Life Orb Grass Knots. Tentacruel excels against Nasty Plot MixApe, resisting Flamethrower and Close Combat and having a high Special Defense to take neutral Grass Knots. Gyarados is also decent but must beware ThunderPunch and Stone Edge, as well as Grass Knot if Stealth Rock is present.

Ground-types also have access to super effective STAB attacks, but must beware of Grass Knot. If Infernape is physical or holding a Choice item however, Hippowdon and Swampert are effective counters. Jolly-natured Dugtrio can trap, outspeed and kill Infernape, but cannot switch in against any attack bar ThunderPunch or Stone Edge. It will usually need to come in on Nasty Plot, after Infernape KOes something, or by predicting Infernape's switch-in.

Defense-wise, Salamence, Dragonite, and Latias all resist Fire, Fighting, and Grass, which covers most of Infernape’s common moves. Salamence’s Intimidate helps reduce physical damage while Dragonite has better defenses. However, Infernape can outspeed them both and retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. On the other hand, Latias’ Special Defense ensures that even a Life Orb boosted Hidden Power Ice from MixApe fails to 2HKO. It can then easily outspeed and OHKO Infernape with Surf or Draco Meteor, and later Recover off any damage taken. Latias must beware of Infernape’s U-turns, which will likely bring in one of Latias’ counters on top of dealing sizable damage.

Azelf can come in on anything but Fire Blast or Flare Blitz and OHKO Infernape with Psychic. Aerodactyl is not weak to Infernape’s common attacks. It can survive one good hit switching in, then outspeed and OHKO Infernape with Earthquake.

Togekiss also OHKOes Infernape with Air Slash, although it needs 252 HP, 120 Special Defense, and a Calm nature to guarantee survival against Nasty Plot Life Orb Fire Blast from Naïve Infernape. Cresselia with max HP is not OHKOed by Nasty Plot or Swords Dance-boosted attacks either, but requires Psychic or Thunder Wave to hurt Infernape.

Paralysis cripples Infernape, so Pokémon with Thunder Wave or Stun Spore are effective. Also, anything using moves not resisted by Infernape will deter it from switching in.
