hey! a couple of things about your sub:

protect doesn't work very well with "start of turn" subs because by the time it is your turn, it is priority 0. and since protect is a priority +4 move, the "window" to use it has passed already. checking at "start of step" would make the clause do what you want it to do here.

you also cannot sub for super-effective moves! you can check for specific moves or attacks of a specifc type, though, such as "dark-type attacks". note that attacks are not interchangeable with moves! you cannot sub for "dark-type moves" since that would include status moves like taunt as well.

finally, this bit did take a bit of clearing up for myself as well, but the gist of it is that you can't exactly tell ninetales to "don’t do anything if it occurs more than once", at least not like that, since it's not part of the timing-trigger-result structure. if you want this sub to only occur once, you can simply affix "once" to the beginning of your sub. something like: "once, at the start of the step, IF absol is to use a dark-type attack, THEN use protect and push down orders" would be perfectly functional.

des didn't try to interact with your sub at all so this doesn't affect the outcome of the battle, but there were still ways to make it work here...
at level 0, absol's only supereffective attacks are flamethrower and rockslide. do note that movepools get much bigger as pokemon grow, but for now you can do this:

no worries! sub rules are difficult to get the hang of for pretty much everyone. i'm going to let you reorder here, although if you just want to use your original orders there's nothing wrong with that.

alright! ninetales immediately boosts up with nasty plot while absol retaliated with a thunder wave. both pokemon exchange blows and absol stalls, ending on relatively even hitpoints, although absol had to consume its berry to make up the difference. how does pixie push through with ninetales and how does des take advantage of the paralysis? we shall see!

instead of chancing the rock slide flinch, ninetales elects to go for the guarenteed protect before bypassing absol's substitutions by firing off two powerful ice beams instead! absol, for its part, seems to favor conserving energy this round, and with ninetales's extra exertion protecting itself the two pokemon are now at equal EN, though the HP gap is substantially greater...

a much less exciting yet very tense round this time. absol was able to take advantage of ninetales' substitution to minimize the number of blows traded this round - good thing too, since it's only hanging on with a handful of hitpoints. the "combat" this round managed to deplete both pokemon's energy reserves though, and with ninetales's paralysis coming to a critical point, how will the next round play out?
