Iron Moth is a powerful special attacker that also provides good defensive utility thanks to Desolate Land and Morning Sun. Its near-unique offensive typing lets it threaten common walls like Ice Scales Corviknight and Scream Tail, especially when boosted by sun. U-turn can be used to maintain momentum against predicted switch-ins like Garchomp and Garganacl, while Toxic Spikes punishes switch-ins with status. Iron Moth complements Ice Scales Corviknight and Clodsire, as it covers their vulnerability to Iron Bundle. Pokemon like Dragapult, Flutter Mane, and Dragonite appreciate Iron Moth taking advantage of their Steel-type checks like Corviknight.

Iron Moth is a great special attacker in AAA, that can exert significant offensive pressure with its great STAB combination while still retaining significant defensive utility in its ability to check Water-types with Desolate Land due to its access to reliable recovery is a powerful special attacker that provides good defensive utility as well thanks Desolate Land and reliable recovery. Its unique offensive typing lets it threaten common walls like Ice Scales Corviknight and Scream Tail, especially when boosted by Desolate Land. Fiery Dance is chosen as it's Fire-STAB as it lets Iron Moth quickly spiral out of control, and the extra initial damage of Fire Blast or Flamethrower is unnecessary. U-turn can be used to maintain momentum on predicted switch-ins like Garchomp or Garganacl. On the other hand, Iron Moth can use its favorable matchup against almost all hazard removers in the metagame to lay Toxic Spikes - which can be devastating in the right matchup - although it often ends up being a wasted moveslot against teams that have Poison-types Garganacl, while Toxic Spikes punishes switch-ins with status. Heavy-Duty Boots lets Iron Moth ignore hazards which would otherwise severely annoy it. Desolate Land boosts Iron Moth's Fire-STAB, while letting it act as a sturdy check to Water-types like Iron Bundle. Iron Moth likes being paired with teammates that can take advantage of its Ground- and Rock-type checks, like Iron Bundle, Ting-lu, and Iron Valiant. Iron Moth compliments Ice Scales Corviknight and Clodsire, as it covers their vulnerability to Iron Bundle. Pokemon like Dragapult, Flutter Mane, and Dragonite appreciate Iron Moth taking advantage of their Steel-type checks like Corviknight.
