Alrighty, I've stopped playing competetively in, like, 2012, but I always watch the VGC videos on Youtube, and for some reason, it always makes me itch to come back, so I figured... I'd try this. I'm probably super bad with this in terms of perfect knowledge on abilities, items and such, so forgive me if this is a standard-ish team.
The team:
I was sure I wanted to use two megas. Mostly because it makes team composition more flexible and harder to prepare against. I also wanted to have two megas that would work well with at least three other pokemon in the team, so that I'd never have more than one pokemon that's "dead weight". Additionally, I knew I wanted to have at least one Fairy, one Dragon, and one Steel type, seeing how some experienced players mentioned it as a common core. Their resistences sounded great, so I figured... Yup. For some reason, Mega-Salamence made me crap my pants more than anything else, which is why I started off with this guy:
Thundurus @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 24 SpA / 68 SpD / 40 Spe
Calm Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice
- Thunder Wave
- Taunt
Incredibly annoying to face, also potentially ruins Mence from the get go. I went with the standard split first, 'cause I'm not sure just what I want to do with it yet. I'm a speed creep though, so I shifted 12 EVs (I felt more would've been overkill), which, at that point at least, did not make a difference I felt made any KOs relevant.
Because I know feel much safer from Will-O-Whisps and other status shenanigans, I slapped Mega Mawile onto my team, which provides a wonderful typing as well as a much appreciated element that works in Trick Room settings.
Mawile @ Mawilite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Protect
Because I like redirecting stuff and wanted something that could at least remotely survive a Kang move, I decided I'd bring in Amoongus, which also greatly helps dealing with Water Types, as I'll play it with Giga Drain.
Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Protect
At this point, I not only REALLY feared Heatran, I also massively felt I could not deal with common pokes like Mega Metagross, Mixed-Salamence and even still, Terrakion well enough. I also had a bit of a weak special defense, which is why I figured Suicune would make a perfect addition to the team. It also adds Tailwind Support, which is nice.
Suicune @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 156 Def / 76 SpA / 4 SpD / 20 Spe
Bold Nature
- Tailwind
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Protect
Cune gets the Sitrus because the shroom has Regenerator, obviously. At this point I was scared I was thinking too defensively, which would really set me up to fail against Perish Song teams, as well as extremely powerful pokemon that could put dents in my team without me being able to pick up KOs. I generally felt that, since I'm so afraid of it myself, why not add a Mega-Salamence as a second Mega? I went with a Dragon Dancing Roost Salamence because I felt I could best make use of this set, given that I'm flexible with another Mega-Pokemon, a redirecter and Speed Control in the form of TWave.
Salamence @ Salamenceite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Return
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Protect
I felt like I may struggle against Charizard Y, and I am deeply afraid of Ludicolo, as it hits a lot of stuff hard, is either fast or durable (rain dance and assault vest) or even both, and has typing I dislike greatly. Therefore, I added this guy:
Greninja @ Focus Sash
Ability: Protean
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 52 SpA / 204 Spe
Naive Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Ice Beam
- Rock Slide
- Protect
So far, it's been going okay. But I would love opinions, as I didn't test it out enough just yet.
