what are IV's?, why do i need it?, how i check what the IV's are on my pokemon?, and how does it help my team?

honestly i dont know any of these questions can someone help me out with this.
 
When you breed a pokemon it will have a set amount of IVs (Individual Values) They are from 1 point to 31. Every IV it has it stats go up by 1 point. So you really want a high ammount of IVs on a pokemon in most of its stats
 
yes well the reason i made these Question's into a thread that way ther will be no other Question can be in the way of answering cause i still have more questions and i dont want mine dragging behind.

for 1 thing i really want to start competitive battling but i need to know how to check for IV's and what do i need to do this?
 
I prefer metalkid's iv calculator because I have saved legends thinking they were awesome due to serebii's only to find out they were marginal at best with other iv calcs.
