Just a random question for the masses.

Then YES SO VERY VERY MUCH best show ever made ever ever

I'd love to gush about what made this show so great, but just in case this wasn't the topic under discussion I'll leave it in hide tags

Good freaking gravy this show

OK I'm pretty sure most people from the UK will have come across this at some point during their childhood or other formative years and it was so good I can barely find the words to describe it. The first series I can actually remember watching was part of the end of the fourth wars, then the Extreme series in between the fourth and fifth wars. Honestly I think that the fifth wars was possibly the single best competition of all of them, with one crucial exception - that the promised final showdown between Hypno Disc and Razer, the two most destructive robots in the whole series, never came to be, as Hypno Disc was pushed into the pit at the last possible second despite having rendered its opponent totally unusable (seriously, it had to fight against Razer without a weapon iirc) - I was so mad at the time that that happened. But yeah, Hypno Disc and Razer, the two best robots ever, barring Sir Killalot (because who doesn't love him). It seemed to get pretty boring towards the end when people started entering with essentially boxes without weapons in order to game the weight requirements and add thicker armour (looking at Tornado/Storm 2 here, those two ruined Robot Wars for me and I'll never forgive them, so thank god for Typhoon winning the last wars. Damn Tornado and its haxy giant frame thing. Also the new house robots. Didn't like them either.

So yeah a show with violence that was totally PG-13, presented by Lister from Red Dwarf and commentated on by Jonathan Pearce (which just made the whole thing)

As you may have guessed, my all-time favourites were Hypno Disc and Razer, but special mention has to be given to Stinger, Thermidor 2, Firestorm (and all its incarnations), Panic Attack, and Typhoon. And ALL of the original five House Robots.

I never watched the US version of the show (or the Dutch, or any other version), though I imagine cultural differences would have... well, the UK version was probably one of the best things the BBC ever did and I'd like to think the American shows it was based off of were similarly good. But that's an aside.

No idea what Battlebots is though.

For anybody who doesn't know what this is, some of my favourite moments I remember:
- Razer vs Chaos 2
- Wheely Big Cheese vs Axe Awe
- Flipper Frenzy (special)
- Razer vs Onslaught (ending)
- Hypno Disc vs Splinter
- Hypno Disc vs 4x4 vs Barber-ous II vs Granny's Revenge 2

ALL OF THIS. And I watched the American version when I was really young but GOD it was awesome.
Battlebots was basically a... I don't want to scaled down version of this but the arena wasn't nearly as big. Here's a video of 10 moments of it.
I really wish I was older a few years ago so I could've fully enjoyed the show - I only have scarce memories of it, but THIS is what sticks out the most.

I used to watch one of these a lot as a kid, but I forget which one. I almost feel like maybe I saw both, and they definitely had different calibers of bots. One seemed to be a little more over the top, the other had bots that were 'smarter' and more strategic.

It was cool to see a bot that had some weird gimmick and you'd think 'how is that going to win' and then it saves itself from certain destruction against the wall spikes by flipping over on a hydraulic foot or something equally nuts.

I can't remember names of any particular bots now, but I know I would root for certain ones to win, especially any underdogs.

I DO remember 'Chinkilla' that was one of those wedge-hydraulic-flipper bots with a big face of Jay Leno on the front.
