Hey guys (and girls), I got yet another rain team here for you. It's nothing special, but since I really enjoy using it and there are two pretty gimicky things about it, I decided to share it with you :]
So, one day, when I was new to the Pokémon Competitive, I really liked the idea of a Perish Trapper. I mean, I still like it, but I wasn't aware of the fact that there were already lots of those, so I "invented" a set for Lapras I really enjoyed using so I built a team around it:
Lapras @ Leftovers
Trait: Hydration
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SDef, Calm
- Surf
- Block
- Perish Song
- Rest
Since Lapras has 130/80/95 defenses, it can take most special hits in the metagame. Its defenses are comparable to the ones of Vaporeon, however, Lapras has an awesome movepool, allowing it to run offensive sets, too. I'm testing some of those, but for this team, I'll go with this.
Then I searched for a parter for Lapras, who could spin away Stealth Rocks, one of its worst problems, and could take hits from most physical attackers. I first decided to take Claydol, but after finally seeing that Claydol sucks, I took Donphan.
Donphan @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef, Impish
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
So, I had two Pokémon for my defensive core. When looking for a third member for my team who could take hits, since I wanted to run rain, I naturally took a specially defensive Politoed. I know, its typing doesn't pair well with the one of Lapras, since they're both Water-types and they share many weaknesses, but since it works, I guess, it's not that bad ;)
Politoed @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 182 SDef, Calm
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Toxic
- Protect
When looking for offensive Pokémon, I made a list of potential team members:
Dragonite, Toxicroak, Thundurus-T and Moltres (I will explain later for what reason I chose Moltres over Tornadus) seemed good potential choices for me. Please consider I was just a beginner at that time :$
First, I took Toxicroak, because it is awesome and it can do fairly well in boosting up with Bulk Ups till nothing can hurt it anymore. Plus, it was a highly needed check to Keldeo.
Toxicroak @ Black Sludge
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 244 HP / 132 Atk / 120 Def / 12 Spd, Adamant
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Sucker Punch
- Substitute
In addition, this set granted me the strong priority I lacked (except the Ice Shard on Donphan, but it doesn't really deal that much damage since it's not STAB and uninvested), so I could deal with threats like Latios now.
Searching for a special attacker and a good check to sun teams, I took a look at Moltres. A Choice Specs Hurricane from Moltres just destroys nearly the entire metagame, and a sun-boosted Fire Blast is able to deal damage to most Pokémon under sun.
Moltres @ Choice Specs
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Fire Blast
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- U-Turn
I took HP Grass over HP Ground for two reasons: Rotom and Gastrodon. These two giant threats to rain teams I wanted to be able to deal with at any cost.
A friend suggested using Agility, however, equipped with just the Life Orb it lacks the power it requires to work well, it fails to OHKO Landorus-T for example.
Now, you may ask why I chose Moltres over Tornadus. I will just list the arguments for and against Moltres to explain you my reasoning behind that:
Moltres:
- Huge Stealth Rock weakness
+ Check to most Sun teams
+ Some more bulk
+ Check to Scizor
The last point is arguably not that relevant, however, since Donphan can't deal that much damage against Scizor while getting 2HKOd by a +2 Bug Bite, Moltres is the last check in my team to Scizor.
By the way, there are only four Pokémon (that are more commonly seen than Pokes like Lapras) in the entire metagame that are able to check Moltres only with bulk, and these are Heatran, Rotom, Chansey and Blissey. Every other Pokémon is basically 2HKOd by the Specs Hurricane.
So, the decision about the last Pokémon ... This was a hard one. At first, I used a mixed rain Dragonite. It had ExtremeSpeed, Thunder, Aqua Tail and Hurricane. Kinda weird, now that I look at it. However, since it didn't work that well, I replaced it by Latios, which worked just perfectly with this team, even though I lose the priority of ESpeed.
I gain some more speed by using a Choice Scarf, so I guess that's fine ;)
Latios @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd, Timid
- Surf
- Thunder
- Ice Beam
- Draco Meteor
It outspeeds many threats like Scarf Terrakion or Landorus and can kill with the rain boosted Surf. You have to watch out for Tyranitar, though; I like to use the obvious switches into TTar to go into Donphan and gets the Rocks up or get a free spin, whatever I want, basically :D
So, yeah. That's my team. I had definitely some fun using it, feel free to test it sometimes :]
If there are some things you'd like to correct, feel free to do so, I am looking forwards to see this team getting better ;)
Finally, I'd like to thank DarklordAbraxas for helping me with this team, you're a really cool guy and I really had some fun making this team with you. :)
And the team for you, you can just import it to PS :]
