Gen 2 Kadabra (UU) [DONE]

:gs/Kadabra:

[OVERVIEW]
Sporting high Speed, good coverage, and exceptional Special Attack, Kadabra is a fierce offensive threat in GSC UU and a tough Pokemon to switch into for most offensive teams. Kadabra is best played aggressively, brought in on double switches or a predicted Rest or Psychic from a foe such as Slowbro. It also threatens many common Pokemon such as Nidoqueen, Haunter, and Qwilfish with its strong Psychic and can keep itself healthy throughout a game with Recover. Its Speed is also excellent, outpacing naturally fast Pokemon such as Haunter, Dodrio, and Mr. Mime while only being outsped by Jumpluff and Electrode and Speed tying with Scyther. Access to useful moves such as Encore and Thunder Wave also lets it support its team well. However, Kadabra's defensive stats are pitiful, leaving it 2HKOed by a lot of Pokemon in the tier, and it loses much of its effectiveness when paralyzed. Furthermore, it faces competition from other Psychic-types such as Mr Mime and Hypno, which generally bring more utility to teams and are more consistent due to their wider movepools and greater bulk.

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========
This set takes advantage of Kadabra's high Speed and Special Attack to make it an offensive threat with crucial utility in Encore or Thunder Wave. STAB Psychic 3HKOes a significant proportion of foes that don't resist it. Thunder Punch is important for hitting Slowbro and Slowking, which otherwise completely wall Kadabra. The extra power is also appreciated against other bulky Water-types such as Blastoise, Gyarados, and Politoed, which are not 3HKOed by Psychic. Recover gives Kadabra greater longevity when battling threats such as Slowbro. Encore can lock a foe into an undesirable move, such as Rest for passive Pokemon or a boosting move for setup Pokemon. However, this is very risky due to Kadabra's frailty, especially against Scyther, with which Kadabra Speed ties. Encore can also help immensely against Baton Pass teams, since Kadabra's fast Encore lets it disrupt the momentum of Mr. Mime. Alternatively, Thunder Wave can support slower wallbreaking teammates such as Sandslash and Granbull and cripple foes such as Jumpluff, Scyther, Electabuzz, Bellossom, Hypno, and Chansey.

Team Options
========
Spikes support from Qwilfish is crucial for maximizing pressure from Kadabra. Nidoqueen pairs well with Kadabra, since bulky Electric-types like Magneton and Ampharos are reliable switch-ins to Kadabra, and Nidoqueen can switch into them easily while maintaining offensive momentum. Pokemon that can check Dodrio, Scyther, and Pinsir, such as Fire Blast Nidoqueen and Haunter, can help Kadabra with its defensive issues. Setup sweepers such as Scyther, Granbull, Pinsir, and Kabutops can take advantage of Encore from Kadabra to acquire a risk-free opportunity to switch in; ideal scenarios include locking Chansey into Soft-Boiled and locking Hypno into Light Screen. Haunter is a good partner for Kadabra, as the two have the same Psychic- and Electric-type coverage and similar checks, meaning Haunter can cripple them with Thief, Hypnosis, Explosion, or Destiny Bond. Mr. Mime can be used as a secondary offensive Psychic-type that supports Kadabra with Thunder Wave, Encore, Thief, Hypnosis, or a passed Substitute. Pokemon that can take advantage of Hypno, such as Granbull, Hidden Power Bug Scyther and Pinsir, and specially bulky RestTalkers such as Ampharos are appreciated. Finally, secondary checks to Slowbro and Slowking such as Electabuzz work well, since Kadabra generally doesn't want to be stuck using Recover versus their Surfs; this can give them a free opportunity to switch out, and Kadabra is vulnerable to critical hits.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Fire Punch can be used to 2HKO Magneton and deal more damage to Pokemon such as Pinsir and Bellossom, but its use beyond that is limited. With Kadabra's frailty, it can make good use of Counter, which allows it to get a surprise KO on foes such as Piloswine and Granbull. Thief can cripple a bulky Pokemon such as Hypno or Ampharos that attempts to switch into Kadabra. Hidden Power Dark can be used alongside Fire Punch and Psychic; these three moves hit every viable Pokemon in the metagame for neutral damage, although this makes Kadabra worse off against Slowbro due to its low chance to 3HKO with Hidden Power Dark. Substitute can be used to exploit Thunder's low accuracy from Pokemon such as Magneton and Lanturn and lets Kadabra safely avoid potential status inflictions from non-Seismic Toss Hypno.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Opposing Psychic-types**: Hypno takes negligible damage from anything Kadabra can use against it and can cripple it with Thunder Wave or set up Light Screen for its teammates. Mr. Mime threatens Kadabra with paralysis and a 3HKO from Thunder while not being hurt much in return, although Mr. Mime fears Thunder Wave from Kadabra. Slowking is only 4HKOed by Thunder Punch and can hit Kadabra hard and Thunder Wave variants can cripple Kadabra. RestTalk Psychic-types are also a significant challenge for Kadabra to deal with, especially since Encore fails against Sleep Talk. However, all of these Pokemon dislike Thief Kadabra and can be forced out by Encore Kadabra if it switches in on a resisted attack or recovery move, or when the foe uses Substitute.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Ampharos and Lanturn are only 4HKOed by Psychic and can hit Kadabra very hard in return with Thunder. Bellossom is similarly 4HKOed and can cripple Kadabra with Stun Spore while keeping itself healthy with Moonlight. Chansey takes pitiful damage from Kadabra and can threaten it with Present or paralysis from Zap Cannon, although it can be forced out by Encore.

**Fast Pokemon**: Jumpluff outspeeds Kadabra and can lock it into an undesirable move with Encore or cripple it with Stun Spore, although variants without Synthesis can be worn down by Psychic and Jumpluff greatly fears paralysis from Thunder Wave or Thunder Punch. Electrode is faster, can set up Light Screen, and can threaten Kadabra with Explosion. Lastly, Scyther and Electabuzz Speed tie with Kadabra and can hit it very hard; Electabuzz can even Pursuit trap Kadabra and Scyther can OHKO with Hidden Power Bug, although they are both 3HKOed by Psychic.

**Magneton**: Magneton resists Psychic and Thunder Punch and deals heavy damage with Thunder, although it must watch for Fire Punch, which can 2HKO.

**Physical Attackers**: Although they cannot switch in safely due to their middling Special Defense stats, physical attackers such as Granbull, Piloswine, and Pinsir pose a significant threat to Kadabra if they switch in as it uses Encore or Recover. Granbull comes close to OHKOing with unboosted Frustration, Piloswine deals over 70% with Earthquake, and Pinsir OHKOes with unboosted Hidden Power Bug.

- Overview is super alright, i'd just give an emphasis to Mr. Mime, Haunter and Dodrio as exampes of Pokémon that Kadabra can outpace as well.

Finally, Recover gives Kadabra greater longevity when battling threats such as Slowbro, and Recover pairs well with Encore if Kadabra is able to lock an opposing Psychic into Psychic, letting it heal off the damage. Kadabra is best played aggressively, switching it in on double switches or on a predicted Rest or Psychic from a foe such as Slowbro.

Spikes support from Qwilfish is crucial for maximising damage dealt with Kadabra, and also pairs well with most of Kadabra's offensive teamates. Nidoqueen pairs well with Kadabra, since Electric-types are reliable switchins to Kadabra, which can give Nidoqueen a free switch in. Setup sweepers such as Scyther, Granbull, Pinsir, or Kabutops can take advantage of Encore from Kadabra to gain a free turn of setup, ideal scenarios include locking Chansey into Softboiled or locking Hypno into Light Screen. Mr Mime can be used as a secondary offensive Psychic-type that can support Kadabra with moves such as Thunder Wave, Encore, or can pass it a Substitute. Granbull pairs well with Kadabra, coming in on Pokemon that normally wall Kadabra such as Hypno or Chansey, while it can be given free setup thanks to Encore. Granbull can also use Lovely Kiss to provide more opportunities for Kadabra to come in. Heal Bell support from Granbull or Chansey can remove status that Kadabra may have taken. Lots of good examples here, i'd just reserve a brief mention to Haunter here as well, it shares the same Psychic + Electric-type coverage, meaning that it can lure some of Kadabra's Special walls with Explosion, Thief or Destiny Bond.

Thunder Wave can support a slower wallbreaking teamate such as Sandslash and Granbull, while also crippling threats such as Jumpluff. However, all of these options are generally hard to fit on the standard set

- I believe that Counter deserves a mention here, allowing Kadabra to net a surprise K.O on Granbull and Piloswine under the right circumstances.

Checks and Counters

**Opposing Psychic-types**: Hypno takes negligible damage from anything Kadabra can use against it and can cripple it with Thunder Wave or setup a Light Screen for its teamates to deal with Kadabra easier. Mr Mime, especially RestTalk variants threatens Kadabra with paralysis and a 3HKO from Thunder while not being hurt much in return, although Baton Pass Pass variants are ruined by Encore. However, all of these Pokemon dislike Thief variants and can all be forced out with Encore. Even with the weakness against ThunderPunch, Slowking absolutely deserves to be mentioned here, especially if it's running Thunder Wave as a coverage; other than that everything looks alright, i'd just give an slight emphasis to ST Hypno / ST Slowking (alongside ST Mr. Mime), since Encore fails against ST-called moves.

**Specially bulky Pokemon**: Ampharos and Lanturn are only 4HKOd by Psychic and can hit Kadabra very hard in return with Thunder. Bellossom is similarly 4HKOd and can cripple Kadabra with Stun Spore while it can keep itself healthy with Moonlight. Lastly, Scyther and Electabuzz speed tie with Kadabra and can hit it very hard(Electabuzz can even Pursuit Kadabra), although they are 3HKOd by Psychic, and Scyther can be forced out by Encore.

**Magneton**: Magneton resists Psychic and Thunder Punch and 2HKOs in Return, although it must watch for Fire Punch, which can 2HKO.

**Bulky-attackers**: Granbull can almost OHKO Kadabra with Return should Kadabra mispredict with Encore against it (nitpicking here, I wouldn't call it mispredicting, instead i'd just say that these attackers are capable of punishing Kadabra's Recover / Encore loops), but Granbull is 3HKOd by Psychic in Return. RestTalk Pinsir and RestTalk Arcanine can switch in fairly reliably and threaten Kadabra in return Also, I believe that Piloswine should be mentioned here, since it fits the criteria of a Bulky Physical Attacker that punishes a passively played Kadabra, even though it's not an reliable answer.

I'll make another quick review (and Q/C) this analysis after you finish the aforementioned changes. Very enjoyable read, lots of Kadabra's main points are accurately covered here :toast:

However, all of these options are generally hard to fit on the standard set

- Just ention Fire Punch before Thief and Counter, since it is the most common alternative move on Kadabra.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Opposing Psychic-types**: Hypno takes negligible damage from anything Kadabra can use against it and can cripple it with Thunder Wave or setup a Light Screen for its teamates to deal with Kadabra easier, RestTalk variants also are immune to Encore. Mr Mime , especially RestTalk variants threatens Kadabra with paralysis and a 3HKO from Thunder while not being hurt much in return, although Baton Pass Pass variants are ruined by Encore. Slowking is only 4HKOd by Thunder Punch and can hit Kadabra hard and Thunder Wave variants and cripple Kadabra, and Slowking is also unaffected by Encore if it’s last move was Sleep Talk (here, you can reword this sentence to something like: "the RestTalk variants of these Pokémon have an outstanding performance vs. Kadabra, since Sleep Talk is unaffected by Encore" and etc; feel free to use your own vocabulary if you want to, must make sure keep it clear that this point is valid to all Psychic-type Pokémon, not only Slowking). However, all of these Pokemon dislike Thief variants and can all be forced out with Encore.

**Faster Pokemon**: Jumpluff outspeeds Kadabra and can Encore it into an undesirable move such as Thunder Punch or Recover or cripple it with Stun Spore, although variants without Synthesis can be worn down by Psychic. Electrode can paralyse Kadabra and setup Light Screen for it’s teamates while 2HKOing with Thunder. Lastly, Scyther and Electabuzz speed tie with Kadabra and can hit it very hard (Electabuzz can even Pursuit Kadabra) don't forget to mention that HP Bug variants of Scyther can easily OHKO Kadabra, although they are 3HKOd by Psychic, and Scyther can be forced out by Encore.

**Bulky-attackers**: (In the beginning of this list, you can make it clear that all of these attackers are capable of threathening Kadabra with their powerful attacks, although most of them ain't consistent switch-ins, not just Granbull!) Granbull can almost OHKO Kadabra with Return and can take advantage of Recover and Encore loops from Kadabra (here, you can expand that Granbull can OHKO Kadabra after a Curse instead), but Granbull is 3HKOd by Psychic in Return. Piloswine is able to take advantage of a passively played Kadabra to switch in and threaten it with Earthquake, although it is not the most reliable answer since it is 3HKOd by Psychic or Fire Punch. RestTalk Pinsir On Pinsir, it's worth to mention that movests with HP Bug can threathen Kadabra with a OHKO, although Pinsir still needs to be careful against Fire Punch variants) and RestTalk Arcanine can switch in fairly reliably and threaten Kadabra in return with their attacks.

Did, this should be ready for second check now.

This is pretty good overall. I personally think Thunder Wave can be slashed after Encore on the main set. It gives you a way to at least slightly threaten Hypno and the other Psychic-types, totally ruins Bellossom and Jumpluff, does something to Chansey, and reliably messes with non-HP Bug Scyther and Electabuzz. I'd also add Substitute and HP Dark to OO. HP Dark + Fire Punch + Psychic is pretty good offensive coverage, only missing out on Houndour and Murkrow sorta (which basically don't exist) though the loss of 5 power on the coverage move for Slowbro actually makes a pretty big difference (it 3HKOes much less often). Substitute is handy for PP stalling Magneton and Lanturn a little more safely if they have Thunder and lets you sit on non-SToss Hypno, among other benefits. But I don't think either of those two belong on the main set.

Where Scyther is mentioned in the body of the text, I would suggest mentioning the speed tie, even though it is already mentioned in Checks and Counters. Kadabra trying to fight Scyther is more of a last ditch effort usually, and is very scary if you don't know which Hidden Power it has yet.

To support Kadabra defensively, I think you generally want to have Pokemon that can deal with Scyther / Pinsir / Dodrio reasonably well, especially HP Bug variants of Scyther (e.g. FB Nidoqueen + Haunter, maybe some Rock-type, etc). Also, you want something that can take on Slowking and Slowbro because you don't want to be stuck spamming Recover against Surf generally, and you need something to take on Hypno (Granbull is listed but there are some other good options too, basically any decently specially bulky Pokemon with RestTalk).

(All of your It’s should be its (no apostrophe). Also, if you are drafting in document writing software please turn off smart quotes, google it if you aren't sure how.)

Diophantine

Banned deucer.
I appreciate the hard work. Echoing everything Earthworm said, but here are some additional thoughts:
Encore can lock an opponent into an undesirable move, such as locking a Granbull into Curse or Pinsir and Scyther into Swords Dance if Kadabra can switch on a prediction, and Encore can also help immensely against Baton Pass teams since Kadabra's fast Encore let’s it disrupt the momentum or Mr Mime.
All of these are pretty risky moves and I am not sure if I would feel entirely comfortable switching Kadabra into Granbull. Twice as bad against Scyther since you have to rely on a speed tie where you lose if you don't get it but only postpone the threat if you do get it. Kadabra can also lock more passive Pokemon into non-set up moves like Rest, etc.
Heal Bell support from Granbull or Chansey can remove status that Kadabra may have taken.
I think this is a bit unnecessary, as the kind of teams you describe Kadabra being useful on won't typically run these types of Pokemon. Optional if you want to remove it, but I wouldn't include it. I guess it can be useful for Slowking/Bro/Hypno TWaving you or the Grass types Stun Sporing you, but these cases are pretty avoidable in general.

Thunder Punch is crucial for hitting Slowbro and Slowking, who otherwise completely wall Kadabra, while Thunder Punch can hit Water-types such as Gyrados harder then Psychic would.
I feel like the second part of the sentence is pretty redundant, given that Electric is super effective against Water is pretty obvious to anyone reading and you mention notable targets in the first part. Might be worth mentioning the Speed tie with Scyther, though Psychic does nearly as much anyway (both guaranteed 3HKO with neither having a chance to 2HKO without crit/drop).

but it’s use is limited beyond that.
Nitpicking, but a burn is always nice.

Electrode can paralyse Kadabra and setup Light Screen for it’s teamates while 2HKOing with Thunder.
Again, nitpicking but Exploding trades 1 for 1, and Kadabra being a hard hitting fast Pokemon with Encore is pretty dangerous against the fast paced-offensive teams you tend to find Electrode on, so it's usually a trade that the Electrode user is happy to make.

Granbull is 3HKOd by Psychic in Return.
I like this pun lol please keep it if GP let you.

I think Substitute and Nightmare can be mentioned somewhere. I've used both moves on Kadabra before to some decent success. PM me or reply here if you want more insight to them.

Let me know what you think/when you make these changes. Thanks.

I appreciate the hard work. Echoing everything Earthworm said, but here are some additional thoughts:

All of these are pretty risky moves and I am not sure if I would feel entirely comfortable switching Kadabra into Granbull. Twice as bad against Scyther since you have to rely on a speed tie where you lose if you don't get it but only postpone the threat if you do get it. Kadabra can also lock more passive Pokemon into non-set up moves like Rest, etc.

Nitpicking, but a burn is always nice.

Again, nitpicking but Exploding trades 1 for 1, and Kadabra being a hard hitting fast Pokemon with Encore is pretty dangerous against the fast paced-offensive teams you tend to find Electrode on, so it's usually a trade that the Electrode user is happy to make.

I like this pun lol please keep it if GP let you.

I think Substitute and Nightmare can be mentioned somewhere. I've used both moves on Kadabra before to some decent success. PM me or reply here if you want more insight to them.

Let me know what you think/when you make these changes. Thanks.
Did everything in both posts, is this QC 2/2 now?

such as locking passive and no setup Pokemon into Rest
Reword this please.
and Recover pairs well with Encore if Kadabra is able to lock an opposing Psychic into Psychic, letting it heal off the damage.
Not sure how necessary this is.
Kadabra is best played aggressively, switching it in on double switches or on a predicted Rest or Psychic from a foe such as Slowbro.
This shouldn't be in the set description. Put it in the overview.
2HKOd by almost everything in the tier
Not entirely true, say something like "quite a few" or "a lot of". It certainly isn't 2HKO'd by the likes of non-SD Bellossom, Jumpluff, Hypno, opposing Kadabra, etc etc.
Kadabra becomes next to worthless if it is paralysed.
While it does lose a lot of viability from being paralyzed, I think "next to worthless" is a bit too strong a phrase, as it can still threaten to hit things hard and can still wall passive Pokemon.
Spikes support from Qwilfish is crucial for maximising damage dealt with Kadabra, and also pairs well with most of Kadabra's offensive teamates.
I think "damage" can be replaced with "pressure" because you can force a lot of switches without necessarily attacking them. I don't think the second part of the sentence is necessary.
Pokemon that can reliably check Dodrio, Scyther, and Pinsir such as Fire Blast Nidoqueen variants as well as Haunter can help Kadabra with its defensive issues.
I know this is for GP, but the grammar here leaves it ambiguous as to whether Haunter is good at supporting Kadabra or a threat to it. You later say that Haunter is a good partner for Kadabra, so it could be inferred that you meant Haunter threatens Kadabra, and that Nidoqueen is a great counter for it.
Kadabra generally doesn’t want to be stuck using Recover vs their Surfs.
Maybe explain why.
Mr Mime threatens Kadabra with paralysis and a 3HKO from Thunder while not being hurt much in return, although Baton Pass Pass variants are ruined by Encore.
non-Talk Mime has to respect TWave the same way Kadabra does.
although Baton Pass Pass variants are ruined by Encore.
I think it's fine to omit this since you mention it earlier.
Jumpluff outspeeds Kadabra and can Encore it into an undesirable move such as Thunder Punch or Recover or cripple it with Stun Spore, although variants without Synthesis can be worn down by Psychic.
Also has to watch out for TWave or TPunch para.
Scyther can be forced out by Encore.
Only if A) Scyther uses Swords Dance or Agility and B) the speed tie works in your favour, so it's quite situational, and only in a last ditch attempt, in which case you'd probably go for para or damage anyway.
**Magneton**: Magneton resists Psychic and Thunder Punch and deals heavy damage with Thunder,
Please add that it can set up a screen.

Psychic 3HKOes a vast majority of the tier.
