Swords Dance Kartana is a threatening wallbreaker and sweeper, using its sky-high Attack stat to cut through common defensive Pokemon such as Toxapex and Landorus-T. Sacred Sword allows Kartana to KO common Steel-types such as Ferrothorn, Heatran and Kingambit. Giga Impact can be used in conjunction with Normalium Z to turn into a devastating Breakneck Blitz, slicing through Flying-type answers such as Tornadus-T, Dragonite, and Zapdos. Knock Off is an alternative to KO Gholdengo and Dragapult reliably, as well as pressure checks such as Skeledirge and Tornadus-T. If using Knock Off, Kartana opts for Fightinium Z to break through Mega Scizor. Swords Dance Kartana pairs well with physical cleaners that capitalize on it dicing up common physical walls such as Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Skeledirge. As such, Mega Lopunny, Zamazenta, and Dragonite make for great partners. Kartana also pairs well with Pursuit trappers such as Mega Tyranitar, Weavile, and Kingambit, as they remove common checks such as Tornadus-T, Dragapult, and Gholdengo. Kartana appreciates having pivots that bring it in safely against passive Pokemon; Rotom-W and Tornadus-T bait in the likes of Ferrothorn and Rotom-W to allow Kartana to pivot in and setup safely. Kartana is forced out by common revenge killers such as Iron Valiant, Zamazenta, and Mega Lopunny, so having teammates that can switch into them such as Tornadus-T, Slowbro, and Landorus-T are ideal.

Choice Scarf Kartana is an incredibly dangerous late-game cleaner thanks to its Choice Scarf-boosted Speed and incredible attack. It can outspeed to outspeed setup sweepers such as Mega Gyarados and Volcarona as well as common Choice Scarf users like Tapu Lele. Knock Off removes the items of defensive Pokemon such as Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Toxapex in the mid-game for it to clean up later on. Sacred Sword hits Steel-types like Ferrothorn, Heatran, and Kingambit. Smart Strike can be used as Kartana's strongest option against Dragonite and Buzzwole. Alternatively, Defog is an option to remove entry hazards in a pinch for Kartana's team, although being locked into it is unideal. Tera Grass skyrockets Leaf Blade's damage, giving it the opportunity to snowball easily alongside Beast Boost. Choice Scarf Kartana fits best on highly offensive teams which put continuous pressure on its checks, allowing it to cleave through weakened defensive cores. Pokemon such as Mega Diancie, Iron Valiant, and Tapu Lele are great partners, as they weaken common defensive Steel-types, allowing Kartana to spam Leaf Blade freely. Similarly, Pursuit trappers such as Kingambit, Weavile, and Mega Tyranitar force the likes of Tornadus-T, Gholdengo, and Skeledirge to either be heavily weakened or forced to Tera into a type not resisting Grass, benefitting Kartana either way. Strong physical attackers such as Zamazenta, Mega Medicham, and Great Tusk weaken physical walls such as Toxapex and Landorus-T, leaving them vulnerable to Kartana.
