For those of you out of the loop, Kyoto Animation's "studio no. 1" (in other words their main production studio) has fallen victim to a deadly arson attack killing 20 staff members and injuring close to 40, not to mention destroying much of their production materials for upcoming projects. I'm going to be linking some English coverage on the incident, please read up on it if you have the time.

The information here is still accurate, to give an update the arson's motive is unknown but he talked about being "ripped off" (the Japanese said パクりやがって) while being held by police

Kyoto Animation produced Haruhi Suzumiya, the first anime I ever watched. Many of its directors have worked on other projects including Yasuhiro Takemoto, the director of Haruhi, Lucky Star, and full metal panic who began his career doing inbetweens for many major anime such as Pokemon, Crayon Shin-chan and Inuyasha.
Currently, a significant amount of Kyoani's staff are either dead, presumed dead, or missing.

This really has personally hit me hard, the senseless death of incredible life and talent is horrifying. Not to mention my early teenage years were full of Kyoani media.

Sentai Filmworks has put up a fundraiser, https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-kyoani-heal if you want to donate somewhere.

I'll update this thread when more news comes out.

UPDATE 1: Taichi Ishidate and Tatsuya Ishihara are safe according to industry colleagues

UPDATE 2: The internet has settled down a bit, 33 dead and 18< with injuries, Takemoto's status is still unknown. Details about the criminal are being withheld due to worries of a lynching

UPDATE 3: Takemoto has been confirmed dead. Rest in peace.
