Kyurem putting on the pressure
After my first two RMT's went pretty well I decided to showcase another one of my teams. The stars of this team will be Kyurem and Regieleki, two hugely underrated mons which all of you are mad sleeping on right now. To not clickbait I did not put in the peak of this team, but I've been chilling around the 1650-1800 ladder with some drops towards 1500-1600 as I'm an AFK motherfucker and lose half my games on the timer while I'm raiding and pking on OSRS. I also got no picture of the peak so that's why I cba putting the excact peak in the title. Only real motherfuckers in here allowed.
Quick note: I also added some calcs for both sides to show what a mon's potential is. The calcs in italics will be opposing calcs versus my said mon.
Creation process
Kyurem has been one of my favorite mons this generation so far. Its dragon dance set was a menace very early on, while specs has also been a menace a bit later on in the generation. However HDB has always been a presence as well so far, so I wanted to explore that side of Kyurem more as well. To build something around Kyurem, the first I could think of was hazard stacking, status and voltturning bullshit. Therefore the first mon I picked was no other than
The GOAT of OU (Landorus-Therian) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic / Explosion
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
We all know who this motherfucker is at this point, he needs no introduction. The sheer amount of role compression he has is just unmatched. It has Intimidate, Stealth Rock, Toxic, Knock Off and a hard hitting STAB in Earthquake. This mon has everything you need in moves and the stats to justify it. I ran the standard rocks set for Landorus with max HP, 144 Speed and 112 Defence to juice this boy even further. But let's be honest, you could run no EV's on this baddie and still get some respectable mileage out of it. I opted to go for Leftovers so it has some bit of recovery, which it otherwise could not have outside external forces such as Leech Seed. I also think Leftovers fits better over Focus Sash for example as this is definately not a suicide lead mon for me. You could opt for the suicide lead if you want to fuck up Garchomp more, however I believe that the rest of the team will not have a lot of issues with Garchomp if you got an IQ higher than this Dutch idiot typing this. I don't feel like I have to show a lot of calcs for this mon as we all know what it does and what its damage ranges are.
Pyro Baller (Cinderace) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Libero
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Sucker Punch
- Pyro Ball
- High Jump Kick
I doubt this mon needs an introduction as well. In my opinion, this mon along with Magearna is the most broken shit we have in OU right now. When thing got announced to have Libero I had my doubts; "No way this thing would be as good as Greninja.". Boy I was wrong, for some reason Pyro Ball feels just simply unfair; 1. To me when I inveitably have a crucial miss 5 games in a row, and 2. For my opponent when it connects. It's just such a spammable move, and combined with HJK, Sucker Punch and U-Turn it's an amazing revenge killer and momentum grabber. The spread on this thing is fairly standard, make it as quick and strong as possible. If you need some pressure on your opponent, this is your boy. It absolutely hates status though, so be aware of that if you weren't already (for all my Dutch readers).
Regieleki @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Transistor
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 180 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Ancient Power / Reflect
- Rapid Spin
We all know this mon right now. It's even more onedimensional than Dracovish (yes, really) but still puts a huge amount of pressure in the right situation. This set might be the first 'surprising' so far so allow me to ellaborate a bit. While this team definately isn't HO by any means, I wanted a defogger/spinner that could reliably spin at the correct times while also being a big pressure on my opponent. Regieleki is just that. After a couple games I switched out my Choice Specs to Heavy Duty Boots to make it spin a couple extra times versus opposing hazard stackers. HDB is an amazing option because honestly this item is also broken as fuck. You almost always get the spin off because with Eleki your opponent is pretty much so hard pressured by a potential thunderbolt or volt switch that he has no other option than going towards their ground type. The spread is fairly selfexplainatory as well. I dumpted most EV's into SpA so that it still could be very pressuring even when not spinning. I opted for 180 Speed + a Timid nature so that it can outspeed Scarf-Kartana (it used to run 216 EV's to outrun Modest Scarf Spectrier). The rest of the EV's are dumped in 72 HP for bulk and fuck even numbers, and 4 in SpD to tank some inevitable special attacks a bit better. If this mon doesn't get you the spins you then congratulations, you have passed the first test of getting Dutch citizenship. I added potentially Reflect in there over Ancient Power to make your Cinderace matchup a bit better (I lost a couple 1v1's vs Cinderace due to it just Sucker Punching me to death) but I prefer AP so that you can still do damage to grounds if you don't need to spin the hazards away (which this team isn't super weak to anyways). Don't get me wrong though, this thing is still fragile as fuck and shouldn't be used with the "Oi if I switch in right now I can spin those rocks away and tank his hit easily" mindset. You can tank some hits for sure, but you're not a defensive Zapdos at all.
Haller (Kyurem) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Pressure
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 36 SpA / 224 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Roost
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
Here we are, the moment you've all been waiting for: Kyurem. Kyurem is criminally underrated in this meta due to its versitility. As said before, I already had some experience with the Specs and SubRoost physical version of this demon. However for this team I wanted to make it a SubRoosting special attacker. Add HDB in there and you're fucking set to hang around for a loooong time. This mon can literally do it all. With pressure it can destroy your opponents low PP moves and shit like Defog while just Subbing and Roosting off the damage (Gyro Ball Ferrothorn for example) (don't Roost on that shit outside Sub though, but you should get the point) while also having such a respectable Speed (224 to outspeed non-Scarf Landorus) and SpA stat (305 with very little investment) to still leave big holes in your opponent's team. I opted for 248 HP because fuck even numbers again and to give it the most bulk possible. This thing can pretty much take on a big part of the meta by itself and that's saying quite something. Technically you could run Leftovers if you want but I think HDB is a much better fit on this mon so that it doesn't get absolutely fucked by hazards. Its longevity is key here and from the get go you can almost immediately see how big Kyurem's role in the game is going to be. It's not unheard of of basically chipping your opponent's mons and sacking your own just to have this monster provide the endgame sweep. Kyurem is also a great future sight tank which not a lot of teams are expecting. Add hazards to the mix, and there's not a lot your opponent can do against it. It will always leave holes in your opponent's team, no question about it.
The Pex (Toxapex) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Toxic
- Haze
- Recover
- Knock Off
Also a fairly standard Toxapex set. Haze and Recover are absolutely two musts so that you won't lose on the spot versus some setup sweepers. I added Toxic and Knock Off in there as they are great support moves that all the mons above will benefit from. Knock Off is for example one of the most important moves I got versus opposing GalarianKings as it knocks their Assault Vest, which allows Kyurem and Eleki to pressure it immensely (mainly Kyurem as it absolutely loves GalarianKing coming in on rocks + spikes to tank one of its two attacking moves while not being scared of Future Sight), and same goes for opposing HDB mons. Pex just knocks so much you're almost tempted to check your front door to see if he actually knocked on there too. I opted for Rocky Helmet to punish U-turners the most I can, and often opposing Cinderaces get at least 50% chip damage just from this monster. Max Defence is chosen as it just fits very well with Rocky Helmet, and it still has a huge SpD stat without any investment anyways. It can reliably shrug off Draco Meteors, Thunderbolts, Hurricanes and it could even tank a Future Sight from full at some cases.
Leech Miss (Ferrothorn) @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Spikes
- Leech Seed
- Knock Off
- Iron Head / Gyro Ball
Ferrothorn, Ferrothorn, Ferrothorn. You're a disgusting mon and that's why I both hate and love you. For this Ferrothorn set I wanted to add spikes to it as my offensive mons would greatly benefit from it. The other moves are fairly standard, Leech Seed, Knock Off and Iron Head. I chose Iron Head over Power Whip and Gyro Ball because I wanted to do a bit more damage versus Clefable and Specs Magearna and I feel that with Gyro Ball you can be easily baited into a pressure stall by opposing Pressure mons. Nevertheless Iron Head is still a very reliable move that gets the job done when called for (it doesn't often need to use it anyways). Specially Defensive Ferrothorn is also great because it can Knock Off assault vests from mons like GalarianKing while not being OHKO'ed by Flamethrower. This trait is often very crucial as getting rid of the AV is key. Its Spikes are also very easily put down on the field which the Slowtwins HATE more than us edgy teens hated Justin Bieber around 2010. An absolutely crucial mon and I feel bad for it being one of the easiest sacks in the west.
Threats
We all know how bad thing thing can snowball with a setup set. Be there early with Pex and be healthy enough to tank a stored power (which'll roughly do 50-60%) or get swept.
Same story as above. Make sure you don't get setup swept.
Not really a threat, but can be a bitch to deal with. Make sure it doesn't have flamethrower for your Ferrothorn.
This core can suck it. Make sure you get rid of their items AS SOON AS POSSIBLE or you're gonna have an annoying ass game.
If your Toxapex isn't full health, you can basically just U-turn out of this game. Having a healthy Pex is super crucial for this, but don't be surprised to sack a mon in the process of defeating this monster.
Is in general just super annoying to work around. Usually I just go to Kyurem as Magma Storm misses more often than it hits anyways and is generally scared of staying in due to the possibility of a Specs or max SpA set. Not really a threat, but moreso a big annoyance. If really needed, you can switch into it with Landorus once.
Not really a threat if you use your brain, but it can be quite annoying and devestating to lose 50/50's versus some rain sweepers. Hazards, Pex and Kyurem will be your big friends in these matchups.
