Latios's Horrible Vacation! [Peaked #7 Wifi OU]

Introduction

Hey guys! I’m back for my second RMT! For those who know me, I’ve been opposed to using weather ever since I found out about drizzletoed and droughtales. I’ve spent countless hours trying to put those weather noobs in their place by kicking their butts without weather. I succeeded in doing that in the dream world tier with the help of Sableye, but I still struggled hardcore in wifi with the lack of being able to use Sableye. Then it just dawned on me. I can fight fire with fire. I can use weather to defeat weather! Now I know everyone who uses weather usually runs mostly offense, so I wanted to break off from the pack and rely on defense. Without further adieu, I present the story of Latios’s horrible vacation.

One day, Latios was very tired from all of the battling going on, so he decided to take a vacation. So Latios went to this very cozy looking hotel, but he was in for a big surprise, because what was waiting for him at the front desk was a vampire! Latios was scared by this, but he didn’t let that stop him from having a good time. Latios awoke the next day, and it was raining! What a bummer! Just when Latios thought it couldn’t get any worse, he was dragged off by the vampire clerk, and he said that he was going to be put on a bed of spikes! However, suddenly, a dancer came out of the middle of nowhere and distracted the vampire long enough for Latios to escape! Latios ran frantically, when suddenly he saw a star. Latios wished he could just go home, and by some magic, his wish was granted! What a nightmare vacation!

Team Building Process:

As you may have guessed, this team started out with a core of the offensive powerhouse, Latios. I’ve seen what Latios has done to teams before, and it’s an excellent addition to get some hefty damage in on those defensive powerhouses.

As I mentioned before, I built this team to counter any kind of weather condition that people want to throw my way, and one Pokemon came to my mind when it came to countering sandstorm. Gliscor was quickly added to the team.

As it stood, my team was very weak to ice type attacks. I decided I wanted a water pokemon on my side to take those hits. I thought of something that could take them like a champion and take out my worries for two of the three weather conditions, and that was Politoed.

I’m half done with my team and I still don’t have anything that can effectively set up stealth rock! However, I wanted something that could also use the rain to its advantage, and that’s when I arrived at Ferrothorn, who can set up rocks, get some status on my swift swim abusing opponents, and take those powered down fire type attacks like a champion.

If I was going to have a rain team, I had to have at least one rain abuser, right? Since it looks like I’m running a fairly defensive team, I thought I’d continue the trend and use something bulky with rain dish. My choices were between Tentacruel and Ludicolo, and since certain people believe Ludicolo should never be used because it’s terrible, I thought I’d give it a try, because I really have no need for Tentacruel’s toxic spikes or anything else it comes with. (And to prove them wrong)

For my final team member, I wanted another rain abuser, but I didn’t want your plain old rain abuser, that everyone expects, so I chose a little surprise, and that was the serene grace Jirachi.

A Closer Look:

Politoed (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
IVs: 0 Spd
- Scald
- Focus Blast
- Perish Song
- Toxic

My first member, my lead, is Politoed. Since this pokemon is built around getting rid of my opponent’s weather, I wanted it to be slow, so my weather could have priority. It appeared that about 60% of Tyranitars I’ve seen running around have at least some speed EVs, so the minus speed nature with 0 speed IVs really could come in handy. For those that don’t run speed however, I could easily just combat them with focus blast and scald, and with the max investment in defense and HP, any Tyranitar will surely fall. Encore is there for any lead that may be an obvious stealth rocker and toxic is to poison them on the switch.

Possible Changes: May turn it into a specially defensive set, but I don’t know the EV spread, so if you recommend that change, please give me the set!

381.gif

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Recover

Latios is my next pokemon. It’s there to be my basic wall breaker. This thing takes out Blissey and Skarmory with its awesome effect of Psyshock. The rain boosted surf is really the ace in the hole here. Draco Meteor is Latios’s main STAB attack for anything I need to hit hard. Psyshock is for pokemon like Tentacruel and Blissey, which both have stellar special defense stats. The EVs on this pokemon are just so I can get maximum power and speed out of my Latios.

Possible Changes: Might consider changing to Kingdra. I get more rain abuse and I lose an ice weakness, but I also lose power and my ability to trick my scarf onto walls that would otherwise ruin my team such as Blissey.

472.gif

Gliscor (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Protect
- Ice Fang
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance

Gliscor here is my main sandstorm counter. This thing is built to tank Excadrill and any other powerful pokemon that usually abuses sand. The EVs and Nature are pretty standard for a defensive set, and so are most of the moves, but you might ask why I have Swords Dance over toxic. The answer to that question is so I can defeat walls better. Also, most people will switch to a counter when I send this thing out, so I can use that to my advantage, and then their counter is no longer a counter.

Possible Changes: None as of right now.

598.gif

Ferrothorn (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Power Whip

Ferrothorn makes excellent use on a rain team. Normally it’s 4x weak to fire, but in the rain it’s only 2x weak, and that makes a huge difference. The EV’s and nature are to give me as much bulk as I can get, and the Sassy nature is to power up Gyro ball a little bit. I have thunder wave so I can stop all of those swift swim and chlorophyll users in their tracks. Also, Ferrothorn carries the all important stealth rocks.

Possible Changes: None

272.gif

Ludicolo (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 40 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Scald
- Protect

Ludicolo is the first real rain abuser on my team. The classic subseed set has been on Ludicolo ever since it was introduced in the 3rd generation, with only minor changes along the way. The EV’s and nature are the way they are so I can get maximum bulk from both the physical and special side. Leftovers combined with rain dish and leech seed basically guarantee Ludicolo a fresh substitute every turn if it happens to be broken. Pair that with protect, and you can double the healing power. New to the 5th generation is scald, which really helps with stalling of I can get the burn off.

Possible Changes: Might replace with protect with another attacking move such as focus blast to help defeat Ferrothorn.

385.gif

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunder
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Water Pulse

This is my surprise rain abuser. Thunder and water pulse both benefit from the effects of rain, and Jirachi’s famous ability, Serene Grace. My opponent can struggle with their parafusion hax while I set up my cosmic powers and heal myself with wish, making my Jirachi all but unbeatable. The EVs and nature are to give Jirachi maximum survivability and attacking power.

Possible Changes: The EVs on this thing are really messed up. I need a better set.

Importable:

Politoed (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)

Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Dragon Pulse
- Psyshock
- Recover

Gliscor (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Protect
- Ice Fang

- Swords Dance

Ferrothorn (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Power Whip

Ludicolo (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 40 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Scald
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Substitute

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunder
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Water Pulse

Conclusion:

This team has brought me great success. All of my struggling with weather teams has finally jumbled up into this team, and I’m very proud of it. You’re welcome to test this team out, and even use it as your own, but please, if you do, be sure to leave some feedback or constructive criticism! Thanks for reading!

My DW OU RMT:
http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3451680

Ok, I'm only going to list the pokemon that give me trouble, rather than list out every pokemon in OU.

Ferrothorn: I really have no way of attacking it if Politoed is gone. It can't do much to me offensively, but it's a pain.

Blissey: I can trick a scarf onto it, but if I'm unable to for whatever reason, I'd have to go on an annoying stall war.

Tentacruel: Once again, if Latios is dead, it's a stall war.

That's all I can really think of right now, sorry!

P.S. inb4you'reweaktothundurus.

Change Jirachi to a sub CM Set

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
Nature: Timid
EVs: 252 Hp / 252 Speed / 4SpAtk

-Calm Mind
-Water Pulse
-Thunder
-Substitute

Hey,

Ferrothorn is a big nuisance for your team to face. It sets up hazards without any trouble on most of your Pokemon, and its dual STABs create plenty of problems. You also have just a single way of hitting it super effectively, and it still barely scratches it. So, I'd suggest replacing Ludicolo for a Bulk Up Toxicroak. Toxicroak provides you with a way to handily defeat Tentacruel, and uses Ferrothorn as set up bait. It is also important for Politoed in that it absorbs Toxic Spikes upon switching in, which could otherwise be fatal to your chances of winning the weather war. The beauty about this set is that it recovers nearly all the HP it loses from forming a sub through Dry Skin and Leftovers, which makes it very difficult to beat and a huge asset against stall teams:

Toxicroak@Leftovers
244 HP | 252 Atk | 12 Def
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch provides you with a form of priority and acts as a nice insurance against frail sweepers such as Thundurus, Tornadus and Latios. I would also suggest taking full advantage of Ferrothorn's spiking potential and replacing Protect with Spikes. Spikes makes it harder for the opponent to wall your sweepers, and also helps out a lot against opposing weather since all the weather starters are vulnerable to spikes. I would also suggest replacing Gyro Ball with Power Whip. Power Whip is more valuable since it provides a way for Ferrothorn to actually beat Water types, and you are not really missing out on hitting anything other than the Latis, which are crippled by paralysis.

I would recommend replacing your current Jirachi set for a specially defensive one. It is just as annoying to face as your current one with Iron Head + paralysis, and still provides your team with Wish support. However, this Jirachi is a much better check to Thundurus and Tornadus, and also provides you with a counter to Reuniclus, a Pokemon which can be troublesome for your team. Jirachi also forms a nearly impregnable core with Gliscor. The evs for this set are 252 HP | 252 Sp Def | 4 Atk, with a moveset of Iron Head | Thunder | Wish | Protect and a Sassy nature.

It would be better for you to try a pure sweeping set on Latios rather than the odd scarf set you are running now. You could instead use a moveset of Dragon Pulse | Psyshock | Surf | Recover with a Life Orb and a Timid nature. This takes full advantage of spikes, 2HKOing Tyranitar with Surf after hazard damage. Latios becomes an excellent wall breaker with this set, being able to break through common checks such as Gastrodon, Blissey and Jellicent. The only Pokemon you really have to watch out for is Ferrothorn, who is set up bait for Toxicroak and Gliscor. Dragon Pulse is preferred over Draco Meteor for more consistent damage and to avoid being Pursuit bait for the likes of Scizor and Tyranitar.

I would also consider trying Perish Song on Politoed over Encore. They accomplish pretty much the same purpose of phazing, but Perish Song is particularly useful for Volcarona, who could potentially be a nuisance for your team to face. Good luck!

Hey there.

I agree with everything IronBullet said, as they are all extremely good suggestions. On the Toxicroak though, I would run a Sub Punch set instead, as that way, you can do mass damage to physical walls such as Skarmory, and most importantly, beat Gliscor. The set for this Toxicroak is as follows:

Toxicroak@Leftovers
92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Speed
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Ice Punch
- Focus Punch
- Sucker Punch

This set can demolish Gliscor, and can do major damage with Focus Punch. It can also easily set up on Ferrothorn. 164 Speed evs lets you outrun Gliscors that run 80 speed evs; the rest is put into HP for more survivability.

I would recommend running Protect over Focus Blast on Politoed, as it will help you Toxic stall / Perish song stall (assuming you take IronBullet's suggestion), as well as help you scout and gain more Leftovers recovery.

Use the sub/cm set on jirachi and ferrothorn, blissey and tentacruel all become setup bait. All your problems solved by a simple solution.

bump. I changed the sets to something that works. Toxicroak was terrible on the team, so I chose to not add it. anything else you recommend?

If Toxicroak doesn't fit well on your team, you should definitely consider something to revenge kill Thundurus. Otherwise it simply sets up at its leisure and dismantles your team. With Lum Berry versions it's an instant 6-0. Perhaps you could try a Scarf Rotom-W over Ludicolo. You can bait the HP Ice from Gliscor rather easily to switch Rotom-W in, and proceed to OHKO with a rain boosted Hydro Pump. I would recommend running just enough speed for base 120's, maximizing special attack with a Modest nature, and putting the rest into HP. Rotom also allows you to maintain offensive momentum through Volt Switch. A moveset of Volt Switch | Hydro Pump | Trick | HP Ice should do well. HP Ice is really filler, in order to deal some damage to the Lati twins and Dragonite. Feel free to run Thunderbolt or some other Hidden Power for coverage.
