Introduction
Hey guys! I’m back for my second RMT! For those who know me, I’ve been opposed to using weather ever since I found out about drizzletoed and droughtales. I’ve spent countless hours trying to put those weather noobs in their place by kicking their butts without weather. I succeeded in doing that in the dream world tier with the help of Sableye, but I still struggled hardcore in wifi with the lack of being able to use Sableye. Then it just dawned on me. I can fight fire with fire. I can use weather to defeat weather! Now I know everyone who uses weather usually runs mostly offense, so I wanted to break off from the pack and rely on defense. Without further adieu, I present the story of Latios’s horrible vacation.
One day, Latios was very tired from all of the battling going on, so he decided to take a vacation. So Latios went to this very cozy looking hotel, but he was in for a big surprise, because what was waiting for him at the front desk was a vampire! Latios was scared by this, but he didn’t let that stop him from having a good time. Latios awoke the next day, and it was raining! What a bummer! Just when Latios thought it couldn’t get any worse, he was dragged off by the vampire clerk, and he said that he was going to be put on a bed of spikes! However, suddenly, a dancer came out of the middle of nowhere and distracted the vampire long enough for Latios to escape! Latios ran frantically, when suddenly he saw a star. Latios wished he could just go home, and by some magic, his wish was granted! What a nightmare vacation!
Team At A Glance:
Team Building Process:
As you may have guessed, this team started out with a core of the offensive powerhouse, Latios. I’ve seen what Latios has done to teams before, and it’s an excellent addition to get some hefty damage in on those defensive powerhouses.
As I mentioned before, I built this team to counter any kind of weather condition that people want to throw my way, and one Pokemon came to my mind when it came to countering sandstorm. Gliscor was quickly added to the team.
As it stood, my team was very weak to ice type attacks. I decided I wanted a water pokemon on my side to take those hits. I thought of something that could take them like a champion and take out my worries for two of the three weather conditions, and that was Politoed.
I’m half done with my team and I still don’t have anything that can effectively set up stealth rock! However, I wanted something that could also use the rain to its advantage, and that’s when I arrived at Ferrothorn, who can set up rocks, get some status on my swift swim abusing opponents, and take those powered down fire type attacks like a champion.
If I was going to have a rain team, I had to have at least one rain abuser, right? Since it looks like I’m running a fairly defensive team, I thought I’d continue the trend and use something bulky with rain dish. My choices were between Tentacruel and Ludicolo, and since certain people believe Ludicolo should never be used because it’s terrible, I thought I’d give it a try, because I really have no need for Tentacruel’s toxic spikes or anything else it comes with. (And to prove them wrong)
For my final team member, I wanted another rain abuser, but I didn’t want your plain old rain abuser, that everyone expects, so I chose a little surprise, and that was the serene grace Jirachi.
A Closer Look:
Politoed (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
IVs: 0 Spd
- Scald
- Focus Blast
- Perish Song
- Toxic
My first member, my lead, is Politoed. Since this pokemon is built around getting rid of my opponent’s weather, I wanted it to be slow, so my weather could have priority. It appeared that about 60% of Tyranitars I’ve seen running around have at least some speed EVs, so the minus speed nature with 0 speed IVs really could come in handy. For those that don’t run speed however, I could easily just combat them with focus blast and scald, and with the max investment in defense and HP, any Tyranitar will surely fall. Encore is there for any lead that may be an obvious stealth rocker and toxic is to poison them on the switch.
Possible Changes: May turn it into a specially defensive set, but I don’t know the EV spread, so if you recommend that change, please give me the set!
Latios (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Surf
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Recover
Latios is my next pokemon. It’s there to be my basic wall breaker. This thing takes out Blissey and Skarmory with its awesome effect of Psyshock. The rain boosted surf is really the ace in the hole here. Draco Meteor is Latios’s main STAB attack for anything I need to hit hard. Psyshock is for pokemon like Tentacruel and Blissey, which both have stellar special defense stats. The EVs on this pokemon are just so I can get maximum power and speed out of my Latios.
Possible Changes: Might consider changing to Kingdra. I get more rain abuse and I lose an ice weakness, but I also lose power and my ability to trick my scarf onto walls that would otherwise ruin my team such as Blissey.
Gliscor (M) @ Toxic Orb
Trait: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Protect
- Ice Fang
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance
Gliscor here is my main sandstorm counter. This thing is built to tank Excadrill and any other powerful pokemon that usually abuses sand. The EVs and Nature are pretty standard for a defensive set, and so are most of the moves, but you might ask why I have Swords Dance over toxic. The answer to that question is so I can defeat walls better. Also, most people will switch to a counter when I send this thing out, so I can use that to my advantage, and then their counter is no longer a counter.
Possible Changes: None as of right now.
Ferrothorn (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Thunder Wave
- Power Whip
Ferrothorn makes excellent use on a rain team. Normally it’s 4x weak to fire, but in the rain it’s only 2x weak, and that makes a huge difference. The EV’s and nature are to give me as much bulk as I can get, and the Sassy nature is to power up Gyro ball a little bit. I have thunder wave so I can stop all of those swift swim and chlorophyll users in their tracks. Also, Ferrothorn carries the all important stealth rocks.
Possible Changes: None
Ludicolo (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Rain Dish
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 40 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Scald
- Protect
Ludicolo is the first real rain abuser on my team. The classic subseed set has been on Ludicolo ever since it was introduced in the 3rd generation, with only minor changes along the way. The EV’s and nature are the way they are so I can get maximum bulk from both the physical and special side. Leftovers combined with rain dish and leech seed basically guarantee Ludicolo a fresh substitute every turn if it happens to be broken. Pair that with protect, and you can double the healing power. New to the 5th generation is scald, which really helps with stalling of I can get the burn off.
Possible Changes: Might replace with protect with another attacking move such as focus blast to help defeat Ferrothorn.
Jirachi @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Thunder
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Water Pulse
This is my surprise rain abuser. Thunder and water pulse both benefit from the effects of rain, and Jirachi’s famous ability, Serene Grace. My opponent can struggle with their parafusion hax while I set up my cosmic powers and heal myself with wish, making my Jirachi all but unbeatable. The EVs and nature are to give Jirachi maximum survivability and attacking power.
Possible Changes: The EVs on this thing are really messed up. I need a better set.
Importable:
Conclusion:
This team has brought me great success. All of my struggling with weather teams has finally jumbled up into this team, and I’m very proud of it. You’re welcome to test this team out, and even use it as your own, but please, if you do, be sure to leave some feedback or constructive criticism! Thanks for reading!
