I took private lessons for 3 months, and then once I realized I was getting ripped off I stopped. He would deliberately waste time during lessons. Everything important on guitar, I've learned from my uncles, who all play.
What you need to stress in your beginning stage is scales and finger movement. That, and learning basic chords. You know, if you want, I could make some videos and put them up on YouTube for you, just some basic lessons to get you started.
For me, I was playing simple chord songs after a month or so, but I obviously wasn't playing them well. It took even longer to play without staring at my left hand, and MUCH longer than that before I could play and sing at the same time. Just don't be discouraged by limitations; if you get frustrated, just stop playing for a couple days. When you play again, chances are you'll do what you were trying to accomplish.
