[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 8
**Price Range**: 2-3 points
**Overview**: Leavanny is a budget Sticky Web setter with a few benefits over other similar options: Grass typing, usable coverage, Chlorophyll alongside decent physical coverage and Speed, and additional support move options like Reflect and Light Screen. That being said, it lacks offensive pressure without significant investment, is missing other Grass-type support tools such as Stun Spore and Leech Seed, has poor offensive dual STAB coverage, and has frail defenses combined with multiple common weaknesses that make it difficult to use outside of being a sacrificial lead or being left on the bench.
[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Entry Hazard Support**: Leavanny’s primary tool is the ability to set Sticky Web against teams with limited entry hazard control, allowing its teammates to take advantage of foes' lowered Speed. It has other support options and decent enough STAB coverage to prevent itself from becoming setup fodder after setting Sticky Web.
**Sun Sweeper**: While Leavanny is not nearly strong enough to immediately sweep opposing teams in the sun, it can utilize Life Orb and Swords Dance alongside its decent coverage options in Triple Axel and Low Kick to deal reasonable damage. It is completely outclassed by most other sun sweepers, but its low cost makes it a usable option.
Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Leaf Blade, Lunge
**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance
**Utility Moves**: Sticky Web, Reflect, Light Screen, Switcheroo, Synthesis, Substitute
**Coverage**: Triple Axel, Low Kick, Knock Off, Poison Jab, Shadow Claw
Niche Moves
========
**Special Moves**: Although Leavanny’s Special Attack is subpar, it can use strong special moves like Leaf Storm and Grass Knot to deal significant damage to foes with high Defense like Great Tusk and Garganacl.
**Trailblaze**: Leavanny can boost its Speed with Trailblaze if anticipating a potential opposing Taunt to be faster than the foe on the following turn.
**Sunny Day**: Leavanny can set sun to enable Chlorophyll, allowing it to outspeed most foes and either set Sticky Web, attack, or allow other teammates to benefit from sun on the following turns.
Common Items
========
**Focus Sash**: Focus Sash is Leavanny’s most consistent way to get Sticky Web set up by allowing it to survive one hit.
Niche Items
========
**Mental Herb**: If the opponent has multiple possible Taunt users that may not be able to knock Leavanny out in a single hit, it could instead run Mental Herb to more reliably set Sticky Web.
**Damage-boosting Items**: For sets using Chlorophyll, Leavanny can take advantage of Life Orb to deal more meaningful damage while having freedom of move selection or Choice Band to deal as much damage as possible.
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: If, for whatever reason, Leavanny is expected to switch in and out multiple times per game, Heavy-Duty Boots protect it from significant damage from Stealth Rock.
**Choice Scarf**: Leavanny can use Choice Scarf to bypass typically faster foes that might try to either use Taunt against it or KO it, allowing it to set up Sticky Web either way. It also has access to Switcheroo to potentially lock defensive foes into a single move for the rest of the game.
Tera
========
Leavanny is almost certainly not the best choice to be a Tera Captain, as it is not strong enough to make use of offensive Tera types even with Chlorophyll and not bulky enough to utilize defensive Tera types effectively. If it were literally the only choice, Tera Ghost would allow it to prevent Rapid Spin, and both Tera Fire and Tera Rock could provide it extra coverage while flipping its weaknesses.
Draft Strategy
========
Leavanny is the fastest bottom-tier Sticky Web user with additional utility in and out of sun; occasionally, it has a positive matchup against teams weak to its coverage or with limited entry hazard removal options.
**Entry Hazard Removal Prevention**: Teammates like Gholdengo, Annihilape, and Sinistcha act as spinblockers to help prevent Leavanny’s Sticky Web from being removed once it is set.
**Sun Setters**: Leavanny’s only offensive utility is enabled through Drought users like Torkoal and Ninetales or Prankster Sunny Day users like Thundurus and Klefki.
Checks and Counters
========
**Faster Foes**: There are many foes that can outspeed Leavanny and KO it with common coverage, including but not limited to Zapdos, Hydreigon, and Kyurem, leaving it contributing little to nothing to the battle.
**Entry Hazard Removal / Heavy-Duty Boots**: Even if Leavanny is able to set Sticky Web, it can be removed by foes like Cinderace, Corviknight, and Iron Treads or simply ignored by any foe holding Heavy-Duty Boots.
**Taunt**: Faster foes like Gliscor, Ogerpon-C, and Hawlucha can anticipate a Focus Sash and use Taunt to stop Leavanny from setting Sticky Web or dual screens with little downside.
**Being Attacked**: Leavanny’s poor defenses, bad defensive typing, and need to invest in Speed mean it is unlikely to take multiple hits and will commonly be knocked out or knocked down to its Focus Sash by strong STAB or common coverage moves.
