Hello everyone! I usually do not compete in the Pokemon Video Game Competitions; however, this year I am strongly considering it.
Team building Process:
This team started off with my favorite pokemon, Gardevoir. With the introduction of fairy, I felt that Gardevoir's capabilities as a special sweeper have grown to a new level.
Now that I had an aggressive special sweeper, I needed a strong physical core. Conkeldurr, Garchomp, and Kangaskhan immediately came to mind. All three posed strong physical stats and coverage.
I needed some utility. Rotom-heat provided will-o-wisp as well as additional coverage with overheat and thunderbolt.
I needed water for additional coverage against fire, rock, and ground. Azumarill provides this coverage and can be a strong offensive threat.
I noticed that azumarill would die fairly quickly before it was able to do anything. I decided to switch the typing roles in order to resolve this problem.
I noticed that against numerous aggressive teams, Conkeldurr was not able to compete effectively. My team also lacked access to quick guard in order to protect my team from priority. I changed Conkeldurr to a much faster pokemon that is able to learn quick guard and thus, Mienshao replaced Conkeldurr.
After numerous battles, I present my current team:
Talonflame (Pyrus) @ Charti Berry
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 Spd / 252 Atk / 252 HP
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Brave Bird
- Tailwind
- U-turn
Talonflame is a strong physical sweeper with access to STAB flare blitz and priority STAB brave bird. U-turn allows for an easy switch out when needed. Tailwind is for extra utility and can set up Kangaskhan and Garchomp for sweeping. Talonflame's ability to easy break walls such as forrethorn is essential. Talonflame's play style is straightforward: set-up Tailwind in a situation that calls for it and use flare blitz or brave bird in order to deal significant damage to the opponent.
Kangaskhan (F) (Terra) @ Kangaskhanite
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 HP / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Sucker Punch
- Power-Up Punch
- Return
Kangaskhan's essential role is to be the main physical sweeper. Having access to an incredible amount of damage due to parental bond, Kangaskhan has become a powerful force within this meta-game for good reason. I actually used Kangaskhan in quite a few teams back in Black and White, so I already knew that it had an excellent move set to begin with. That move set has become intensified with the introduction of power-up punch in Generation 6. Parental bond allows Kangaskhan to receive the attack stat boost twice, allowing it to easily set-up for a sweep.
Mienshao (Pugna) @ Wide Lens
Ability: Reckless
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Quick Guard
- High Jump Kick
- Rock Slide
Mienshao is one of my favorite pokemon from Black and White. With access to fake out and quick guard, Mienshao is an excellent lead capable of accomplishing numerous tasks. High jump kick and rock slide are both powerful offensive attacks; however, they both have low accuracies. Wide lens reduces the risk of High jump kick and allows rock slide to hit more often. Quick Guard allows some protection against priority which major threatens this team.
Gardevoir (Lux) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Telepathy
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Psychic
- Thunderbolt
- Will-O-Wisp
the main special sweeper. With the introduction of the fairy type, Gardevoir has become a strong sweeper with excellent coverage and typing. Dazzling Gleam is to cover dragon-types with pokemon such as Salamence and Garchomp being dominant within the meta-game. Psychic is for additional stab and coverage. Thunderbolt is coverage against Talonflame and Azumarill.
Garchomp (Squalus) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Protect
Now, it is time for the infamous Garchomp. Garchomp has incredible offensive potential and type coverage synergies well with this highly aggressive team. Earthquake and Dragon Claw are Garchomp's main STAB attacks. Rotom, Gardevoir, and Talonflame are all immune to Earthquake's damage. Rock Slide is placed to counter major threats such as Mega-Charizard and Talonflame. Protect has numerous functions from stalling a turn to baiting a move.
Rotom-Wash (Perluo) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 28 SAtk / 148 SDef / 20 Spd / 60 Def
Calm Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Protect
Lastly, we have Rotom-Wash. With one of the best typing typing in the entire game (due to levitate), Rotom-Wash is one of the best will-o-wisp users. Rotom-Wash is easy to switch in at most times. Hydro pump provides much needed coverage from rock and ground pokemon. Rotom-wash can wall numerous threats if the time arrives.
