Salazzle uses its high Special Attack and great typing to become a prevalent special attacker in the 1v1 metagame. Fake Out is used so Salazzle can break Sturdy on Pokemon such as Crustle, Magnezone, and Avalugg. Sludge Wave is Salazzle's best Poison-type STAB option, hitting Fairy-types such as non-Assault Vest Primarina, Sylveon, and Whimsicott. Overheat allows Salazzle to beat non-Choice Scarf Porygon-Z, Choice Band Galarian Darmanitan, and Rillaboom. Nasty Plot allows Salazzle to break through bulkier threats such as defensive Arcanine, Galarian Corsola, and Mandibuzz. Encore can be used over Nasty Plot to allow Salazzle to beat Slowbro; however, Nasty Plot is almost always the preferred option. Life Orb is used to increase Salazzle's damage output to let it KO Crustle and non-Assault Vest Primarina after Fake Out. The given EV spread allows Salazzle to outspeed base 100 Speed Pokemon such as Choice Specs Celebi. 20 Defense EVs ensure that Salazzle will always survive an Aqua Jet from Adamant non-Choice Band Azumarill, while a Rash nature alongside the remaining EVs allows Salazzle to hit as hard as possible.
Salazzle should always use Fake Out turn one for chip damage or to break Sturdy in the event of Pokemon such as Crustle and Avalugg. The only exception to this is when facing Azumarill, where Salazzle should immediately use Sludge Wave, as it isn't guaranteed to survive an Aqua Jet after Life Orb recoil. Despite Salazzle's ability to stallbreak, it is incapable of defeating bulkier threats including Chansey and Eerie Impulse Rotom-W. Salazzle is also unable to deal with bulkier attackers such as Assault Vest Primarina, Snorlax, Dracozolt, and Dracovish. Salazzle also can't deal with faster Pokemon such as Zeraora and common Choice Scarf Pokemon including Porygon-Z and Galarian Darmanitan. Teammates such as Choice Band Crustle and Zeraora are appreciated, as they help to cover these weaknesses. Assault Vest Primarina makes for an exceptionally good partner, as it handles Dragon-types Salazzle can't break through such as Dragapult, Dracovish, and Kyurem. In return, Salazzle covers Primarina's Grass-type weaknesses such as Rillaboom alongside Choice Band Crustle and Scyther. This team composition also often benefits from a Grass-type as a final choice, often to defeat Zeraora and complete the synergy created between Fire-, Water-, and Grass-type Pokemon.
