Limelight, an Offensive OU team.

Here's a little back story to how I was introduced into competitive pokemon: With the essential fall of Halo 3 that has occurred over the past few weeks, I've been looking for another game to get into. Going back to a game from my past seemed like the right direction. I haven't owned a pokemon game since silver, but my past few weeks of playing has really taught me about the OU metagame.

Without further adiou, here's the team:

Empoleon (M) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 156 HP/100 Spd/252 SAtk
Modest nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Aqua Jet
- Stealth Rock
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
---
The lead position was originally the most difficult to establish, but I feel Empoleon fits this role nicely. STAB Hydro Pump puts alot of pressure on every lead, and this set has had great success against every suicide lead. The only lead I truly have trouble with is Infernape, and that's where the next mon comes in.

Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 156 HP/72 Atk/96 Def/184 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Taunt
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
---
Bulky Gyarados has become a staple to my team. Coming in on Infernape leads and dragon dancing allows me to put alot of pressure on any opponent. He does a great job taking the fighting attacks aimed at Tyranitar, and usually gets to set up once a game. I'm still debating on the stone edge vs bounce moveslot, and any help would be appreciated.

gengar.png

Gengar (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Protect
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire]
---
Gengar is essentially the staple of my team. Putting massive damage from the special end onto opponents, forces them to make switches. However, his main purpose is to remove the pursuiters that would shut down my Latias sweep. A protect on the first turn against tyranitar/scizor allows me to decide whether to switch out (Crunch/Bullet Punch) or attack with Focus Blast/HP Fire (Pursuit).

Latias (F) @ Leftovers

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Spd/252 SAtk
Timid nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Calm Mind
- Dragon Pulse
- Surf
- Recover
---
CM Latias does alot of damage once the pursuiters are removed. She often switches in on the electric attacks aimed at taking down gyra, and can stat boost until she is forced to recover. She's my all purpose sweeper, and has one quite a few games as the last man.

Scizor (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
EVs: 188 HP/252 Atk/4 Def/60 Spd
Adamant nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Brick Break
- Roost
---
Most people expect the CB set, which allows me to Swords Dance while they switch into something to take the Bullet Punch. After a swords dance, brick break and bullet punch deal massive damage, while I can recover away residual damage with roost. All in all this set does massive damage, while still being durable. I'm considering switching Lefties to Expert Belt, as this would make the set less predictable, but I'm not sure of it yet.

Tyranitar (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spd
Jolly nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Pursuit
- Earthquake
---
The standard scarfed Tyranitar. It does its job as a revenge killer, removing the the ghost/psychics that do heavy damage to Gengar, and it cleans up the stat boosters who sometimes get through.

So please, offer any advice you can, and I'll test it out. Maybe pokemon will stick as my game of choice as Halo 3 comes to a close.

Also, if someone can help me with picture sizing it would be appreciated :-)

Replace Protect on Gengar with Explosion and use Choice Specs.

Also Scizors EVs look really wierd.
Also replace Taunt on Gyara with Thunder Wave

To bad the Halo Reach beta version is over :(

Anyway I suggest Grass Knot over Ice Beam on your lead Empoleon. Why? Because you will face more leads that are weak to Grass then to Ice (Swampert, Hippowdon, ). You should also consider Chople Berry as your hold item so you could beat Infernape. Empoleon is bulky enough to survive hits from opposing leads (eg. EQ from Metagross).

@ above poster, Protect is essential for MysticGar so it cannot be dropped.

Delko I was stating for him to make the switch into Specs Gar.

Hmm, okay. I was confused because you didn't say why. He uses Gengar to lure in pokemon that could prevent a Latias sweep. The most common of them are Scizor and Tyranitar and MysticGar can take them both out (except Scarftar). So there is absolutely no reason to run Specsgar.

Ok I see.

Anyways i you need a lure for T-Tar and Scizor I'd use this very unusal set for Froslass

Froslass @ Choice Specs
Timid
252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Hp
Hidden Power (Fighting / Fire)
Protect
Ice Beam
Shadow Ball

HP Fighting kills T-Tar while HP Fire kills Scizor. I'd go with HP Fighting as if you can lure Scizor out it can be dispatched by using Waterfall doing 37%-43% from Gyara. That is a clean 2HKO after Stealth Rock damage. It also function similar to MYSTICgar.

I'm testing out the above changes, thanks for the advice.

Personally, I hated the Reach beta. Way too much in terms of randomness. Reticule bloom, limited lateral movement, ect. I liked H3 alot, couple of 50s in MLG Slayer Dubs and a 40 or higher in every playlist, but I think reach sucks.

That's really why I'm giving up on Reach and finding a new game.

And back to pokemon: I'm having trouble with para hax teams, any advice?

Rest talk machamp over tyranitar solves t-wave teams. I don't personally see why you have tyranitar tbh, you have scizor and you have gyrados, they cover all the threats scarf does.

I'll try this out, but its been absorbing Jirachi trick-scarf lead very nicely.

It is very easy to solve this problem. Rest Talk Rotom-A makes a great tank and using Scarfed Gyarados solves the problem having @ setup pokemon on a team also can lead to issues.

Hey, nice team. I'll try and give it a rate.

First thing I'd like to point out is that MysticGar does not outspeed Choice Scarf Tyranitar...you seem to be under the impression that you can KO all Tyranitar with Focus Blast after using Protect. You will most likely win against other builds, but Scarftars are just all over the place nowadays and they will OHKO you every time with Pursuit. You can solve this by choosing to Focus Blast when you bring Gengar in and your opponent switches, but as we all know Focus Blast is kinda unreliable. Even if it does miss though, you have Scizor to take care of T-tar, so you won't be that screwed.

I think the biggest threat to your team right now is Jirachi, particularly the Physical Choice set. With a moveset of Iron Head, Thunder Punch, and Fire Punch, it can revenge kill or force out any member of your team with the exception of Empoleon. You can beat it by intelligent switching and maybe even find an opportunity to set up, but the more of your team your opponent has seen, the riskier that is. For example, Jirachi might switch in on your Scizor and you switch to Tyranitar to absorb the Fire Punch. Oh wait, they predicted you and used Iron Head. Your Tyranitar takes 60-70% damage and has a 60% chance of flinching as well. Not a happy ending there.

I'd recommend you replace your Empoleon with a Lead Mixpert (go on the Smogon StrategyDex to find a set you like. It can comfortably switch into any of ScarfRachi's attacks and force it out with the threat of an Earthquake. Also, it can absorb incoming Thunder Waves. Your whole team hates Paralysis, so this would probably be a great help to you. As if that weren't enough, Swampert can also handle Scizor and Tyranitar if Gengar is down.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Im sorry this isnt much of a rate but i would personally recommend you keep Stone Edge over Bounce on your Gyarados. From my experience building teams around him you will generally want stone edge for one thing- stopping salamence setting up on you. I usually prefer bounce to nail celebi and open up a sweep, but salamence comes right in and youre open to draco meteors or a sweep without a reliable revenge killer for it. For this team i think stone edge would be the better choice hope i helped!

Do not use Thunder Wave on Gyarados, it is an unreliable way to set up with him. I would either keep Taunt, or change it to Earthquake.

Frosslass would be a pointless switch for Gengar, as it is not as good as Gengar, and Gengar lures out Tyranitar and Scizor.

Machamp over Tyranitar won't really be able to stop all the T-Wave teams around now, the only things that do are Ground types, Electivire, Jolteon, and Pokemon with Limber.

As a better way to deal with ScarfTars, while still having Pursuit, would be to switch Tyranitar with Weavile. He is extremely underrated, and he could also prevent LO Starmie from wrecking your team. Also he can outspeed a +2 Tyranitar, and always stop DDMence with Ice Shard. Here's the set:

Weavile @ Choice Band
Jolly, 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spd
Ice Shard | Pursuit | Low Kick | Knight Slash / Ice Punch

Definately switch Empoleon to Swampert, as McLuvdisk pointed out, it solves a bunch of your problems.

Hope my rate helped.

For your pictures I use Pokemon Elite 2000.com for icons, and sprites used for an "at a glance" look at your team. For sprites above your Pokemon's summaries I use Arkeis, com

Give Gengar Substitute as then you cannot be killed by Scarf Tar, you can switch out and the pursuit takes the Pursuit. Or if you are feeling lucky you could try and ire a focus blast behind the sub and hope it hits.
