live/concert albums vs studio recordings

I'm interested on hearing some thoughts about what you prefer to listen to, as far as the actual recordings of the music goes. Simply put: do you have a strong preference towards one over the other in nearly every case, or is it more of a case-by-case situation?

Personally I'd have to go with the latter. Some bands and solo performers are just simply amazing in a crowd setting, wheras others don't really translate well for several reasons, mainly because the numerous instrumentals that they use don't translate well in a different acoustic environment from where the original studio recording was done, or because -and this is a real annoyance- some lead singers just don't seem to take concerts seriously, like they think that they can get away with half-assing it just because everyone in the building knows the lyrics anyway.

I don't think that I was ever all that interested in any kind of metal, punk, or Post-hardcore until I happened to stumble onto a few live concert recordings on Youtube of Sparta and Pantera, and now I've learned to appreciate them, and similar acts, a lot more. Conversely, however, I thought that the Rolling Stones made an embarrassment out of themselves a couple of years ago at the Super Bowl halftime, but to be fair, they've been playing some of those same songs for 25+ years now and they are definitely no longer exactly in the prime of their careers.

Concert recordings are rubbish, but I'd rather go to a gig than listen to an album any day

i hate live albums, unless they contain new material i don't care for them. i'd much rather go to a concert instead of listening to one on my ipod, because to be honest most bands sound like crap compared to their studio outings. unless, of course, you're at the concert, in which case it'll be awesome.

I actually really live live albums a lot of the time. The raw sound that comes off of a live album is completely different then most bands studio recordings that have been run through filters and edited and stuff. It also gives you a good idea on how much energy they play with which is really good for the young new bands. But, i do agree that if I really wanted that kind of experience I could just go to a show.

I don't like live albums, but I love actually GOING to gigs. Going to see Sonata Arctica on the 12th =]

I don't like live CD's very much, but I like watching live DVDs because you get the whole visual aspect as well. I.E. I love Score, Budokan by Dream Theater, From Wishes to Eternity by Nightwish, Blackfield NYC by Blackfield, PULSE by Pink Floyd...etc.

It's like a gig in your own home.

Although I have to admit actually going to gigs is even more awesome.

In live albums the singers are often slightly off-tone, the studio material is more polished. If you want the live albums you might as well go to the gig, that way you actually get to see the band.

I really like live albums. In fact, I usually find I like live versions of songs better than studio recordings after hearing both.. Playing on a stage gives the band a chance to improvise and explore in a way that they can't do in a studio setting.
