Hello everyone. Before I discuss this team, I'd like to thank everyone who commented on my previous team, Lucario Destruction. The feedback was amazing and very helpful, and it convinced me to change some sets around. But this team, however is centered around Dragonite and Sunny Day Heatran wrecking havoc. Even when sunlight fades, Dragonite prefers the shield from residual damage, allowing me to keep Multiscale in tact.
The Team:
Heatran (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Sunny Day
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power
- SolarBeam
I absolutely love Sunny Day Heatran. It is a huge threat that is commonly underrated. It gives me a buffer against other weather teams, and Dragonite and Heatran, together can wall Sun Teams anyway. The surprise value of the weather change and SolarBeam makes Bulky Waters think twice before switching in. I usually use Sunny Day after their weather starter is greatly weakened, or against a Clear Skies team, when I predict a bulky water. I attempted to make the Heatran Dragonite "core", kinda like a commonly used Mag+Dragon core. The two have amazing typing synergy, but Terrakion still hits the two very hard with Stone Edge. Heatran also assists Dragonite in slaying one of its best counters in the game, Slowbro, with SolarBeam.
Dragonite (M) @ Lum Berry
Trait: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Outrage
- Fire Punch
- Earthquake
Ahh, Dragonite. This Old School Dragon obtained one of the greatest abilities possible, in Multiscale, allowing it to set up on things it normally couldn't, such as -2 Latios, assuming I have it active. What sets this Dragonite apart from the crowd is the fact that it is Jolly and packs EQ, which destroys Heatran after its potential Balloon has popped. With a Jolly nature, I also can outspeed Jolteon at +1, and can OHKO with either Outrage or EQ. EQ is so important because it forces threats like Scarf Terrakion to not bait me into Outrage, assuming I'm at +2, and I can effectively KO and continue sweeping past a weakened Skarmory. The boost in power Fire Punch obtains from Sunny Day is nice against Tangrowth, who can live even Adamant +1 Fire Punch, outside of Sun.
Mamoswine (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Snow Cloak
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Endeavor
- Ice Shard
With Heatran setting up Sun, I immediately noticed I needed a Stealth Rocker, as well as a Dragon check so I decided to roll with Mamoswine. This classic Gen 4 set performs quite well in 5th Gen, even where there are no real "defined leads." Endeavor is great because I can lay rocks down, then severely cripple something else with Endeavor. Ice Shard allows me to deal with Dragons, and with the Focus Sash, I can unexpectedly stay in on threats like Starmie or Politoed, with no real risk. It is, however a difficult decision whether I should lay down Rocks, on Politoed, or Endeavor expecting Scarf. That's where the next Poke comes in.
Starmie @ Leftovers
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Rapid Spin
I wanted to use a spinner to ensure Multiscale would be active, most of the time, so Starmie fit the role perfectly. The fact that it's an offensive spinner fits the style of this team extremely well. With Bolt-Beam hitting everything for damage, bar Shedinja, who dies to SR and other things. It can work in a manner to switch into Specs Toed, if I'm absolutely desperate. The speed jump on Terrakion is also nice.
Scizor (M) @ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 152 HP / 252 Atk / 104 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- Pursuit
I picked Scizor because it even further weakens Slowbro and Mamoswine, one of the most obvious ways to deal with Dragonite. It also is a greatly appreciated buffer against Terrakion and Reuniclus who is are huge threats to my team, however Dragonite can set up on it locked into Close Combat, but Reuniclus still gives me trouble.
Rotom-W @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Trick
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Ice]
Lol. As if I wasn't concerned about Dragonite enough, here's Scarf Rotom-W! Rotom is a solid check to Choice Banded Terrakion, once I've taken the time to scout it. It also revenge kills Gyarados, and Dragonite. I have considered T-Bolt over Trick, just for Sub DD Gyarados, but it still leaves me vulnerable to threats like opposing Virizion, and Ferrothorn who can set up entry hazards on my team. Despite Sunny Day being present on this team, it only lasts 5 turns, which is all I really need, so the washing machine will not be set aside for too long. I could possibly place Scarfed Terrakion here, because Hydreigon with Scarf is a threat to this team.
