So my friends decided to create a Pokemon tournament. They have their own rules, and we are playing on actual DSs instead of PO. Here are the rules:
Basic Rules:
-Species clause
-Sleep Clause
-Evasion Clause
-Item Clause
-Clear Sky
-No Shadow Tag or Moody abilities
-No Banned Pokemon (list made by the organizers)
-10 pokemon on a team (I'll get to this)
-Allowed up to 3 restricted pokemon (also listed)
Additional Rules:
-All battles are 6 versus 6 Single battle format
-The player that first knocks out their opponent wins
-If a player’s final Pokemon uses Self-Destruct, Explosion, Destiny Bond, or Final Gambit and both player’s final Pokemon are knocked out as a result, the player whom used the move loses the match.
-If a player’s final Pokemon uses Double-Edge, Volt Tackle, Flare Blitz, Take Down, Brave Bird, Submission, Wood Hammer, Head Smash, Wild Volt or Struggle or is holding Life Orb and both player’s final Pokemon are knocked out as a result, the player’s Pokemon which used the move wins the match.
-If both player’s final Pokemon is knocked out by a weather condition (Hail or Sandstorm) the Pokemon knocked out last wins the match.
-If a Pokemon’s ability or held item such as Rough Skin, Aftermath, Liquid Ooze, Iron Barbs, or Rocky Helmet result in both Pokemon being knocked out the Pokemon with the ability or held item wins the match.
-If a player selects Run, either on purpose or by accident, he will count as the loser the match. Another non-counted match may be played if both parties agree and time for both parties allows.
Nuances
-You can use weather, but it can only benefit two pokemon on your team. So, if you have Rain Dance or Drizzle, you can only have two pokemon with rain-related abilities or water-type moves. (I don't want to use weather anyway).
-Teams are made up of ten pokemon, and you are allowed to see all ten of your opponent's pokemon before the match (species and ability only). Players then choose the six they want to use and begin battling.
-No hacked pokemon. You may hack and then breed for convenience, but no illegal movesets or perfect IVs by punching in numbers. (So I'm not going to run hidden power).
Banned Pokemon:
Arceus
Mewtwo
Ho-oh
Lugia
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Dialga
Palkia
Giritina
Giritina –O

Kyruem
Regigigas
Volcorona
Heatran
Landorus
Manaphy w/ Tail Glow
Blaziken w/ Speed Boost
Garchomp

Dragonite
Tyranitar
Salamence
Matagross
Hydregion
Haxorus
Lucario
Blissey
Chansey
Scizor
Electivire
Also, I like to make my teams with pokemon released in the same generation. I want to run an all-Gen V team this time. Take this into consideration when critiquing.
I have 8 battle-tested pokemon, and 2 that I want to use and am currently testing.
Smuglord (Serperior) (M) @ Light Clay
Trait: Contrary
EVs: 184 HP / 32 Def / 40 SDef / 252 Spd
Nature: Timid
- Reflect
- Light Screen
- Leaf Storm
- Taunt
My dual screener set leads my team and taunts if I suspect some kind of set up, screens, then leaf storm sweeps. Contrary is legal in this tourney, so I'm gonna use it. This EV set has never failed me.
Leonardo (Carracosta) (M) @ White Herb
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 196 Atk / 60 SAtk / 252 Spd (OR) 4 HP/ 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Hasty/Lonely (OR) Adamant/Jolly
- Waterfall/Aqua jet
- Rock Slide/Stone Edge
- Ice Beam/Earthquake
- Shell Smash
Not sure if I should go mixed with this guy. I have no other guys that can use Ice beam, and the +2 SpA boost from Shell Smash makes it deadly. Aqua Jet comes in handy, but not good enough for KOs unless I get 2 Smashes. Lemme know if I should go all-physical or mixed on this one.
(EDIT) - Today I was talking with a friend who recommended I get a Mild nature for Ice beam and put the Extra EVs into Attack. Then I could run Stone edge for massive power and Aqua jet as a backup priority. Sounds good to me, but I'll test it.
Dr. Hax (Haxorus) (M) @ Dragon Fang/Lum Berry
Trait: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Adamant/Jolly
- Dual Chop/Outrage/Dragon Claw
- Dragon Dance/Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Taunt
I love Haxorus, but sometimes I can't decide which is more important, speed or power? I used to invest in all speed, but he could never get the KOs. I gave him outrage with the all-speed set, and he had enough power, but steel types would set up all over me while I'm locked.
I think the adamant nature and dragon fang would give dual chop enough power, but I'm still not sure. Is the boost from Jolly too much to lose? Adamant puts him at a mammoth 432 attack (unboosted), then he dragon dances, and it becomes a 648. If he gets a second Dragon dance with the extra screen support, there's no stopping him. I'm still testing him out, but can't decide.
Lil'Zard (Scrafty) (M) @ Big Root
Trait: Shed Skin
EVs: 152 HP / 116 Atk / 40 Def / 140 SDef / 60 Spd
Nature: Careful
- Roar
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Crunch
Not a thing I would change about my Scrafty. Bulk up sweeper, Roar on anything that tries to counter set-up. It has worked wonders for me.
Heartless (Chandelure) (F) @ Shell Bell
Trait: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Nature: Timid
- Energy Ball
- Flamethrower
- Calm Mind
- Shadow Ball
This chandalure set works for me. I usually have enough time to set up a calm mind and then I have plenty of attacking power. Shell bell is just for longevity.
Best Pony (Ferrothorn) (M) @ Rocky Helmet
Trait: Iron Barbs
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SDef
Nature: Sassy
- Leech Seed
- Substitute/Thunder Wave
- Spikes
- Gyro Ball
Seems to be working, throws down spikes at least twice, leech seeds people to force switches and gives support to guys like Scrafty and Haxorus. Great partner with Chandalure. Still testing.
Arachnode (Galvantula) (M) @ Expert Belt/Wise Glasses
Trait: Compoundeyes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Nature: Modest
- Thunder
- Bug Buzz
- Energy Ball
- Volt Switch/Charge beam
Gets revenge kills pretty easily on anyone who doesn't outspeed him. I prefer Expert belt to life orb, but Wise glasses may work sometimes. He can also decimate without a boost. Iv'e tested this set a lot, and not much to say about it, except charge beam. Should I go for it instead of Volt Switch?
Doug (Excadrill) (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Nature: Jolly
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Rapid Spin
My rapid spinner. Not super fast, but man can he dish out damage. Haven't tested him much, he's more of a filler. I do want a rapid spinner, and he's the only Gen 5 one that looks good to me.
SIGYLGLYPH (Sigilyph) (M) @ Flame Orb
Trait: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Def / 92 SDef / 100 Spd
Nature: Timid
- Cosmic Power
- Psycho Shift
- Roost
- Stored Power
This guy is INSANE. If the other guy is dumb enough to let him get set up just a little bit, its a win if they have no roarer or dark type. Even then I use him as my last poke and make sure all the dark types are dead before I send him out. He can still burn stall them though.
(EDIT): I think I'll scrap Conkeldurr for a Wish Support Alomomola. Something like this:
Squishy (Alomomola) @ Leftovers
Trait: Regeneration
EVs: 252 HP/ 24 Def / 232 SDef
Nature: Calm
-Wish
-Substitute/Waterfall
-Protect
-Toxic
Just maximum stall power, I just don't have much defense to stop Taunt and Roar. Otherwise I can seriously annoy anything not steel or poison, and if things look grim, I can just wish and switch, which is this fish's main role. Not sure If I should kinda balance defense with special defense, or go all out physical. 252 HP/ 24 Def / 232 SDef and a Calm nature gives her 202 in both defense and special defense, which isn't too shabby considering it's backed by a solid 534 HP stat.
Let me know what you think, what I need, and any problems I might encounter.
Thanks!
