Hey everyone. I’m going to keep this short and simple because I hate RMTs that are made up like epic novels. RU is my favorite tier; this is the team I’ve been using for the past month. It’s doing pretty good but I feel it could use a certain boost. Unfortunately I’m only a halfway decent battler and team builder, so I hope some of the better trainers can help me out here.
At a glance:
The Team:
Aggron@Leftovers
Rock Head | Adamant
252 HP, 252 Atk, 6 Spe
~ Head Smash
~ Heavy Slam
~ Fire Punch
~ Stealth Rock
Aggron has the #1 spot on my team and it’s also my #1 problem child.
Originally this spot was occupied by Torterra, but I really needed a good
normal and flying-type resist that could still set up SR. Unfortunately
Aggron really has trouble setting up rocks reliably and I’d like to improve it
or replace it with something better.
Moltres@Choice Specs
Pressure | Modest
252 SpAtk, 252 Spe, 6 Def
~ Overheat
~ Air Slash
~ Hidden Power (Grass)
~ Flamethrower
Moltres, IMO the most dangerous Pokémon in RU. It’s too much fun to nuke
the hell out of (almost) everything with Specs Overheat, although most of
the time, when the opponent’s fire resists are still around, I find myself
spamming Air Slash. HP Grass for the occasional Quagsire, Rhydon and of
course Slowking. Flamethrower for when I need a reliable fire move without
drawbacks.
Hitmonchan@Expert Belt
Iron Fist | Adamant
252 Atk, 216 Spe, 40 HP
~ Drain Punch
~ Ice Punch
~ Thunderpunch
~ Rapid Spin
This used to be the standard Foresight + Spin Hitmonchan, but 85% of the
time I found Foresight to be useless. I hate mentioning Slowking in every
paragraph, but I’m seeing it in every battle, so I started using
Thunderpunch to help me muscle through it. I also found Drain Punch to be
a good enough source of recovery, so I exchanged Leftovers for an Expert
Belt to (sometimes) fake a choice set.
Samurott@Wide Lens
Torrent | Jolly
252 Atk, 252 Spe, 6 Def
~ Aqua Jet
~ Megahorn
~ Swords Dance
~ Aqua Tail
Yeah, I like to use tweaked standard sets. It’s standard SD Samurott with
Aqua Tail replacing Waterfall and Wide Lens replacing Life Orb, boosting
the accuracy of both Megahorn and Aqua Tail. Even without Life Orb,
Slowking is still OHKO’d after a Swords Dance. I changed from LO to Wide
Lens because with entry hazards, mediocre speed and bad defenses,
Samurott just got worn down way too quick and Megahorn misses kept
screwing me up. That said, I absolutely love this mon, and this set.
Originally used to be a Kabutops, but I wasn’t a fan of the Ground and
Fighting weaknesses.
Grumpig@Leftovers
Thick Fat | Calm
252 HP, 232 SpDef, 24 SpAtk
~ Psyshock
~ Focus Blast
~ Whirlwind
~ Thunder Wave
My Special Wall & Phazer. Mainly spreads Paralysis and counters Fighters
and Moltres(!). Besides not being weak to Grass and Electric, its main
selling point over Slowking for me is Whirlwind. It’s the only thing that
keeps Sigilyph from walking all over me. Lack of recovery is a bit of a
letdown, but then again I wouldn’t want to replace any of these moves
anyway. I use Psyshock to hit the Hitmon’s weaker physical Defense. With
24 SpAtk EVs, Hitmonchan is OHKO’d after rocks. Grumpig has always been
helpful and I have no desire to use something else in its place.
Vileplume@Black Sludge
Effect Spore | Calm
252 HP, 156 SpDef, 102 SpAtk
~ Giga Drain
~ Sludge Bomb
~ Aromatherapy
~ Sleep Powder
Again, a seemingly arbitrary combination of EVs and nature, but since
Grumpig is already my “designated” Special Wall, I decided to give
Vileplume’s attacks a little more power. This cool flower helps me by
countering any SubSeeders and other powerful Grass Type attackers,
absorbing Toxic Spikes, and removing status from the team. After it gets
in, most of the time it puts something to sleep unless there’s a Sap Sipper
on the other team. Any Mon that could take its place either lacks
Vileplume’s useful resistances or the ability to be a Cleric, so I’d say this
Lady is here to stay.
*****
Summary – What this team has trouble with – What I’d like to add
- One major point is Stealth Rock. As I said, Aggron can’t set them up reliably due to its exploitable weaknesses and bad Speed & Special Defense. Aggron in general isn’t all too great without a Choice Band, I feel. I need something to wall Normal/Flying attackers, though.
- I had quite a few battles in which Toxic Spikes would have been really helpful. With the Tangrowth/Slowking (both with Regenerator) combo becoming really popular, Toxic Spikes would be a great addition to this team.
- Wish support would be neat-o, but I can do without it.
- SD/DD Feraligatr could be a bit of a problem, but it can really only set up on Moltres locked into a Fire Move. Everything else would status or hurt it severely.
