- Pain Split
[SET COMMENTS]
Rotom-W's exceptional typing, Levitate, and decent utility movepool give it a solid place in the metagame as a defensive pivot capable of switching into offensive staples like Melmetal and Heatran while also being able to threaten out Ground-types like Landorus-T and Great Tusk from blocking Volt Switch. Will-O-Wisp shuts down threats like Mega Scizor, Kingambit, and Urshifu-R, allowing Rotom-W to more easily check them throughout the course of a game. Rotom-W also threatens their teammates that would normally absorb Will-O-Wisp such as Gliscor and Heatran. Thunder Wave deals with faster threats like Mega Lopunny and Iron Valiant, helping teammates that these Pokemon would otherwise outspeed and threaten out like Mega Tyranitar and Gholdengo. Pain Split is Rotom-W's only form of reliable recovery, so it often struggles with longevity; it lets Rotom-W gain back health from switch-ins such as Galarian Slowking and Raging Bolt. Leftovers is used to gain extra healing, as Pain Split is somewhat unreliable in the face of chipped down threats that can mitigate that healing.
Rotom-W fits best on offense and bulky offense teams that appreciate it pivoting in their big threats and benefit from it crippling the opposing team. Pokemon like Mega Medicham and Mega Tyranitar specifically like the fact that Rotom-W can take on faster threats like Great Tusk and Choice Scarf Landorus-T that would otherwise threaten them out while also appreciating it luring its checks such as Ting-Lu and Galarian Slowking, respectively. Both also value the potential Thunder Wave support Rotom-W can give. Rotom-W can't take on Grass-types like Ogerpon-W, Kartana, and Rillaboom, so Pokemon that help in this regard, like Dragonite and Volcarona, can be very useful. Due to Rotom-W's below-par special bulk, it's very susceptible to attacks from Raging Bolt, Mega Latios, and Serperior, which means that special walls like Ferrothorn and Galarian Slowking are very appreciated. Galarian Slowking in particular can form a pivoting core with Rotom-W, which fits beautifully on the teams that Rotom-W is usually found on, while Ferrothorn can easily handle Grass-types like Ogerpon-W and Rillaboom for it. Since Pain Split is not a reliable source of recovery, Rotom-W's Leftovers is very important to it; therefore, Knock Off absorbers like Mega Diancie and Clefable are great partners so Rotom-W can stay healthy over the course of a longer game.
