ORAS Doubles OU Lucrative Talent (Seasonal)

QZM1hI8.jpg

Introduction

Hey everyone, this is my first RMT for DOU. First, I'd like to give a big shoutout to my friend and cute user Nido-Rus who introduced me to doubles and has been a huge help for me in learning the tier. I initially wanted to learn this for grand slam but school got in the way so I dropped it. Now that I'm on holidays, I decided to join the DOU Winter Seasonal since my friend Heliosan finished top 3 in the previous one. Figured it's a fun way to partake in competition and learn the tier. Surprisingly enough, I had a nice run despite starting the tier about a month ago getting knocked out in round 5 which isn't terrible I suppose since it's top 32 out 128 participants (thanks giragoomy for pointing that out). Anyway, I was inspired by Leremyju to build this team after he showed me a team he built for a seasonal to face lohgock. Despite not having as much knowledge of dou, I felt like mega lucario could be very good since it had a very nice speed tier right above the 110s and above thundy. Dou is a strange tier in the sense that speed control is often implemented in teams in the form of trick room, tailwind, weather, or prio which is pretty different from singles based tiers where teams rely on naturally fast mons and choice scarfed mons (please correct me if I'm wrong) so I figured that mega luke, with the right support to combat these strategies, would be very effective. Oh yeah, the title was suggested by my friend who is on meds and he thought it would be funny to name it "lucrative talent" because "luke-talon" so yeah, whatever haha

Team Building Process

Sorry if my process sucks, I'm pretty new to the tier so building isn't as intuitive for me yet

So I started with mega luke and pulled up this handy dandy link (shoutouts stratos for giving it to me)
lucario-mega.png
suicune.png

Just off of the check list, I wanted some sort of mega kang switch in, lando switch in, blah blah. It seemed like I needed a really fat mon that also has some offensive presence so I threw on a suicune.

latios.png

At this point, I wanted a good fire resist, water resist, ground immune etc so a latios fit very nicely since it is the premier zardy check in ou.

I wanted some form of speed control besides tailwind because rain can get troubling and thundy is kinda splashable due to utility+good offenses

landorus-therian.png

I still needed a better ground immunity, preferably one that doesn't mind rock slide too much so lando fit perfectly since it brings speed, power, and intimidate to the team.

Going over the checklist again, I realized I needed some sort answer to trick room so nido suggested talon saying that luke+talon is an amazing core.

Recognizing that rain is still an issue and sylveon posing a big threat to the team, nido put ferrothorn over suicune

An In-Depth Look

lucario-mega.gif

Nice Shorts Bro (Lucario) @ Lucarionite
Ability: Inner Focus
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Extreme Speed
- Protect

Mega lucario is insanely powerful being able to ohko threats like diancie with close combat and heavily dent other mons. Close combat was selected since it hits incredibly hard due to stab+adaptability boost and will dent anything that doesn't resist it. Stone edge is to hit charizard-y and extreme speed is nice priority that enables luke to beat talon and even annoy offensive threats like deoxys. Protect is protect and this is doubles. Overall, luke is just amazing due to a blistering 112 speed stat and incredible 145 attack stat which allows it to not only outpace the majority of the metagame, but also pretty much opens holes in teams.

talonflame-3.gif

Hot Driver (Talonflame) @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Tailwind/Will-O-Wisp/Taunt
- Protect

Talonflame just brings more speed and power to the team holding a life orb to maximize damage output while still retaining the ability to switch moves to annoy mons like kang with a burn. Brave bird is of course the powerful priority move that allows talon to threaten all sorts of builds like rain, trick room, etc. Talon works nicely with lucario since luke can get rid of talon checks like diancie, heatran, and even do damage to lando. Luke also gets rid of thundurus which is nice. Flare blitz is the other move which allows it to do nice damage to steels like ferro and electrics that would other wise tank its brave birds. It also hits aegislash for nice damage which helps lucario immensely. Taunt is nice for wide guard+substitute aegi.

latios.gif

Steel Beams (Latios) @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Hidden Power [Ground]/Tailwind
- Protect

Latios is super nice here and switches into those pesky fire types that trouble luke. Draco and psyshock is standard and allow latios to threaten mons like kyurem-black, amoonguss, hydreigon, and so much more. This guy helps in sun match ups and is a great water resist that can usually take a hit and hit back hard. Hidden power ground is great for heatran and just helps talonflame a lot. Tailwind can also be used over hp ground to give yourself an edge vs faster mons and is just nice speed control in general.

thundurus.gif

Third Raikage (Thundurus) @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Thunder Wave
- Protect

Thundurus is running an offensive set as opposed to the bulky set because, with safety goggles, it still acts as some way to deal with amoonguss. Thunder wave is nice for paralyzing things and just helps in general vs a rain match up. Thunderbolt is nice stab that hits everything that doesn't resist it for good damage while flash cannon hits diancie and kyurem b for great damage. Thundurus works very well with talonflame in wiping out bulky waters and ohkoing diancie. Despite the seemingly repetitive coverage of the team so far, this stacks up and gives the team a very offensive momentum that just continuously pressures the opponent.

landorus-therian.gif

Ruckus (Landorus-Therian) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Superpower
- U-turn

Landorus was added because it's landorus. Can't really go wrong with a choice scarf set since it brings the team even more speed control and reliable methods of dealing with threats like mega kang, mega diancie, mega gross, terrakion, and more. It's very easy to just bring this guy in, click rock slide, and hope for the best. But when you're not flinching your opponent to death, lando is probably losing to wide guard aegislash or something along those lines. But really, lando is great for just getting easy spread damage and often cleans up after luke and talon break teams.

ferrothorn-4.gif

Short Bus (Ferrothorn) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Atk / 12 Def / 20 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Power Whip
- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Ferro is a great member of the team since it improves the rain match up immensely and helps a ton vs annoying fairies like sylveon. Power whip allows it to hit bulky waters decently hard and often gets the necessary damage required for other members to net a kill. Without gyro ball, I wouldn't be able to check fairies. It also just hits everything really really hard since ferro is super slow. Leech seed+protect is more annoying strats that wear the opponent down in tandem with rocky helmet. This guy is useful vs those weak physical attackers or even some support mons like jirachi and just helps wear those down to the point where another member can come in and grab a kill.

Alternate Versions
After talking with giragoomy, he recommended some possible changes which are all great ideas. Some of these changes were:

heatran.png
>
talonflame.png

heatran.gif

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 56 HP / 252 SpA / 200 Spe
Modest Nature
- Substitute
- Heat Wave
- Earth Power
- Protect

Heatran is very nice vs aegislash which annoys my team a lot and also helps vs trick room if I am able to get a sub up on the turn my opponent trick rooms. Losing talonflame changes the dynamic of the team but not in a bad way since I still have several forms of speed control. Essentially, it works nicely with the team since tran appreciates luke breaking waters and kyurem and such while latios is able to switch into moves that trouble it. Tran also checks sylveon (although I'm not certain if it can actually check sub cm sylveon).
gengar.png
>
thundurus.png

gengar-3.gif

Gengar @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Bomb
- Icy Wind
- Will-O-Wisp
- Taunt
Gengar is a nice change as well since it still maintains that speed control thing with icy wind but also helps the trick room match up with taunt. Sludge bomb helps immensely vs sylveon while wisp cripples various physical attackers and annoys things like amoongus. Overall, it's a nice fit for the team since it can work with ferro to wear things down and pave the way for luke, talon, or lando to clean up.

Note: the 2 changes are separate and are not meant to be made at the same time. Basically, the changes would give me 3 different versions of the team. Also, the changes assume that suicune is used in place of ferrothorn.

Conclusion

This team has been very fun for me to use since the majority of my doubles experience is me abusing mons I can't normally use in ou. I find mega luke to be very underrated and effective and believe that this team supports him nicely. Unfortunately, I got knocked out using this team but that more due to my bad plays. I'll continue playing the tier as it's very fun for me and plan to put out more teams. I'm hoping to do a lot better in the next seasonal I join since getting top 32 with very little metagame knowledge was pretty nice imo. Now that I'll be a lot prepared, I'm certain and enthusiastic that my performance will improve. The DOU room also has very friendly people and a welcoming community that make the transition from tiers very easy. Anyway, thanks for reading guys!

Hey man, very nice team. I myself love doubles too as this was the format i started with in showdown. As for the team, there aren't that many changes needed as this is very well thought out team, but just a few of them-
1.You face a massive threat against wide guard aegi as it stops heatran totally and nothing on your team touches it, though you have gengar it is easily taken care of most of the time. So I would suggest landorus -I as a sure way to deal with aegi and stuff like heatran also it sits at a very nice speed tier of 101 and helps your team with bisharp too, believe me even with lucario you dont want it at +1, I know choice scarf is very nice to have on a offensive team but then its your choice finally.

2. Also man except luca and rock slide lando which is really predictable though and doesnt even ko the bulky ones, specially after removing talon and thundy you don't have any way of checking char-y and venu under sun, so i would suggest bring back talon for heatran and replace gengar with wide guard aegi to help with sylveon and bring excellent utility of wide guard and improve your TR matchup.

3. Also azumarill might be problem for you if played well, specially the banded one, your sole check ferrothorn gets 1HKOed by superpower. So i know this wont help that much but you could try thunderbolt on latios over hp ground as you have enough for heatran already.

252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Superpower vs. 252 HP / 12 Def Ferrothorn: 374-442 (106.2 - 125.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Talonflame @ Life Orb
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 120 SpA / 136 Spe
Naive Nature
- Brave Bird
- Overheat
- Protect
- Tailwind

Landorus @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Bomb
- Rock Slide
- Protect

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
- Flash Cannon
- Shadow Ball
- King's Shield
- Wide Guard

That's all man, nice team. Good Luck:mad::mad:
