Lunala [QC: 0/2]

Status
Not open for further replies.
[Overview]
High defensive stats, good speed, a fantastic ability in Shadow Shield and an annoying movepool comprising damage, status and phazing allows Lunala to serve as a premier check to many of the dangerous physical attackers in Ubers, such as Groudon, Zekrom, Zygarde-C, Necrozma-DM, Darmanitan-G and Rayquaza. Checking so much of the tier makes Lunala fantastic for role compression, freeing up slots on the rest of the team. Furthermore, offensive Lunala cannot be underestimated either, as it can lure in and take out Yveltal and Ho-oh with the help of Meteor Beam, making teammates checked by them much more fatal for the opponent while being a deadly sweeper in its own right. However, Lunala suffers from being reliant on Shadow Shield. This, combined with it often being unable to permanently or quickly stop a threat, means that it can be worn down throughout a match. Additionally, it is very weak to status as any chip damage leaves it unable to switch in without breaking Shadow Shield while also wearing it down to the point of no longer being able to effectively serve its role. Therefore, Pokemon that it is meant to check such as Groudon and Zygarde-C may use Toxic to eventually beat it. Apart from being a lure, offensive Lunala is largely outclassed by its defensive set and Calyrex-S. Finally, Lunala's typing leaves it extremely weak to common Dark-type and Ghost-type moves.

[SET]
name: Defensive
move 1: Ice Beam
move 2: Roost
move 3: Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave
move 4: Hex / Roar / Defog
item: Heavy-Duty Boots
ability: Shadow Shield
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
This set aims to stop dangerous physical attackers such as Zekrom, Necrozma-DM and Groudon in their tracks, potentially afflicting them with a status condition or phazing them. Ice Beam always 2HKOs Zekrom, has a good chance to 2HKO Groudon and Zygarde-C and has a chance to OHKO Zygarde before it transforms. Furthermore, it deals decent damage to Yveltal as it switches in. Will-O-Wisp is usually the status move of choice as it cripples physical attackers and isn't blocked by most of Lunala's targets, though be wary of Lum Berry. However, Thunder Wave can be run instead if spreading paralysis is more important, notably crippling special Pokemon such as Eternatus and Kyurem-W. Hex allows Lunala strong hits on targets with a status condition, dealing more damage to them than a super effective Ice Beam. It also deals useful damage to Pokemon not weak to Ice Beam such as Necrozma-DM, which is 2HKOed when afflicted by status, Marshadow, Calyrex-S, Ferrothorn and Calyrex-I, preventing it from a complete momentum drain. Roar allows Lunala to phaze out Pokemon attempting to set up on it, preventing it from being overwhelmed. Alternatively, Defog allows it to clear hazards but is generally the worse option due to Lunala wanting one of the two other moves. Heavy-Duty Boots is mandatory to freely switch in on hazards and preserve Shadow Shield. Finally, 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature allows it to tie with opposing Lunala and outspeed Rayquaza, though 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 Spe can be run to still outspeed Zekrom and Groudon while adding to its bulk.

Dark-type and Ghost-type moves deal massive damage to Lunala, meaning teammates that can handle users of these moves, such as Yveltal, Marshadow, Urshifu-S and Calyrex-S, are good partners. Some examples are Yveltal, Xerneas and Eternatus. Status is also deadly to Lunala, as it may fail to check the Pokemon it needs to even if it's only slightly worn down. Therefore, Pokemon that can switch into Toxic such as Necrozma-DM are appreciated, as well as clerics such as Blissey and Xerneas. Sets running Hex become far more potent if paired with teammates that can spread status such as Eternatus and Necrozma-DM. Lunala will often draw in Yveltal and force it to take an Ice Beam, which may potentially be deadly for it in the long run if it is Tricked a Choice item, making Calyrex-S with a Choice item a strong ally.

[SET]
name: Meteor Beam
move 1: Meteor Beam
move 2: Roost
move 3: Moongeist Beam
move 4: Ice Beam
item: Power Herb
ability: Shadow Shield
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Meteor Beam with a Power Herb allows Lunala to raise its Special Attack and fire off a powerful Rock-type move on the same turn, allowing it to take out Yveltal and Ho-oh that try to come in on the defensive set. The latter is OHKOed while the former drops to a subsequent Ice Beam. Taking out these Pokemon allows teammates that are checked by them to wreak havoc, while also raising Lunala's Special Attack to high levels. After this boost, Moongeist Beam can 2HKO specially defensive Necrozma-DM, some variants of Eternatus, defensive Xerneas, specially defensive Ferrothorn after Stealth Rocks and Clefable. Ice Beam is important for finishing off Yveltal and Zarude while also OHKOing Zygarde-C with a boost (if it hasn't transformed it gets OHKOed even without a boost) and Landorus-T, Rayquaza and Landorus-I with or without. Furthermore, Groudon, Zekrom and physically defensive Zarude are OHKOed with a boost after Stealth Rocks, and 2HKOed without. The former two can't do much back if Shadow Shield is up, allowing Lunala to also serve as an emergency check to them. Roost allows it to leverage its natural bulk even more by healing off damage to maintain Shadow Shield. 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature are used to tie with opposing Lunala and outspeed Base 90 Pokemon such as Zekrom and Groudon, while also outspeeding Rayquaza and specially defensive Yveltal.

Calyrex-S is a fantastic partner and one of the main reasons to use this set, as after Yveltal is gone it can clean an opposing team. Be aware that while tricking it a Choice item can create even more pressure, Yveltal with a Choice Scarf can KO Lunala before it can use Ice Beam. Marshadow and Necrozma-DM are also great teammates that appreciates both Yveltal and Ho-oh gone. Blissey and Tyranitar stop this set cold, so teammates that can deal with them such as Marshadow, Zygarde and Groudon help Lunala out a lot. Answers to Calyrex-S and Marshadow such as Yveltal and Xerneas are important as they can stop a sweep from Lunala cold. Finally, a cleric such as Xerneas or Blissey is very helpful for keeping Shadow Shield up.

**Dark-types**: Dark-type Pokemon hit Lunala for massive damage while resisting its STAB moves. Yveltal threatens it with Knock Off and Foul Play, but is vulnerable to status and Ice Beam. Furthermore, it has to watch out for Meteor Beam. Zarude can cure status with Jungle Healing but it cannot take Meteor Beam into Ice Beam. Urshifu-S resists all of Lunala's common attacks but hates to be burned or paralyzed. Tyranitar heals status with Rest and is unphazed by anything Lunala can throw at it.

**Ghost-types**: Like Dark-types, Ghost-type Pokemon deal heavy damage to Lunala but are threatened by it in return. In particular, fast or priority-using Ghost-types such as Calyrex-S, Marshadow and Giratina-O can stop offensive Lunala's attempt to sweep.

**Blissey**: Blissey doesn't care about anything Lunala does, though if it isn't carrying Shadow Ball it can't do much back except status Lunala. Confide foils attempts to rack up repeated Meteor Beam boosts.

**Eternatus**: Eternatus's Toxic is very detrimental to Lunala's defensive potential as it makes maintaining Shadow Shield and Lunala's Health very difficult. Furthermore, it can switch into anything but Thunder Wave and Ice Beam and can stall defensive Lunala out with Recover.

**Ho-oh**: Ho-oh can switch in well to the defensive set, only fearing Thunder Wave, but has to be wary of Meteor Beam.

**Ferrothorn**: Ferrothorn doesn't take status well but can switch into Lunala's attacks and Knock Off its Heavy-Duty Boots, crippling it.

**Rest Kyogre**: Kyogre with Rest can absorb status from defensive Lunala and doesn't mind hits, though Roar prevents it from setting up in Lunala's face.

Fix this sentence. Its far too many words for not enough content, and there are too many examples given, limit it to 2 or 3 (preferably Groudon, Zekrom/Rayquaza and Zygarde) Checking so much of the tier makes Lunala fantastic for role compression, freeing up slots on the rest of the team. Just say Lunala is great for role compression and combine this sentence with the last one. Furthermore, offensive Lunala cannot be underestimated either, as it can lure in and take out Yveltal and Ho-oh with the help of Meteor Beam, making teammates checked by them much more fatal for the opponent while being a deadly sweeper in its own right. This belongs in set details more than the overview. Reword this entire segment from my last comment, there's a lot of words here that dont really say much. This should be 2 sentences max, just "Lunala is susceptible to chip due to how reliant it is on Shadow Shield, and the things it checks can try to take advantage of this via Toxic and other forms of chip damage." Apart from being a lure, offensive Lunala is largely outclassed by its defensive set and Calyrex-S. Finally, Lunala's typing leaves it extremely weak to common Dark-type and Ghost-type moves.

This set aims to stop dangerous physical attackers such as Zekrom, Necrozma-DM, (AC) and Groudon in their tracks, potentially afflicting them with a status condition or phazing them. Ice Beam always 2HKOs Zekrom, has a good chance to 2HKO Groudon and Zygarde-C and has a chance to OHKO Zygarde before it transforms Power Construct activates. Furthermore, it deals decent damage to Yveltal as it switches in. Will-O-Wisp is usually the status move of choice as it cripples physical attackers which Lunala aims to check and isn't blocked by most of Lunala's targets, though be wary of Lum Berry. However, Thunder Wave can be run instead if spreading paralysis is more important, notably crippling certain special Pokemon such as Eternatus and Kyogre Kyurem-W. Hex allows Lunala strong hits on targets with a status condition, dealing more damage to them than a super effective Ice Beam. Hex deals more damage to foes with a status ailment, outdamaging Ice Beam even against foes like Groudon and Eternatus. Dark-type and Ghost-type moves deal massive damage to Lunala, meaning teammates that can handle users of these moves, such as Yveltal, Marshadow, Urshifu-S and Calyrex-S, are good partners. This reads like you're saying Marshadow and Calyrex-S switch in to Ghost and Dark type attacks. Some examples are Yveltal, Xerneas and Eternatus. This should definitely not be its own sentence, merge it with the previous one and reword it so that it's clearer. Status is also deadly to Lunala, as it may fail to check the Pokemon it needs to even if it's only slightly worn down. Therefore, Pokemon that can switch into Toxic such as Necrozma-DM are appreciated, as well as clerics such as Blissey and Xerneas are appreciated. Sets running Hex becomes far more potent if paired with teammates that can spread status such as Eternatus and Necrozma-DM. Lunala will often draw in Yveltal and force it to take an Ice Beam, which may potentially be deadly for it in the long run if it is Tricked a Choice item, making Calyrex-S with a Choice item a strong ally. I dont like this as a point, Defensive Lunala doesnt overlap brilliantly with Calyrex on teams imho, I'd rather mention partners that appreciate its ability to deal with Groudon and Zygarde, like Zekrom or your own Groudon.

[SET COMMENTS]
Meteor Beam with a Power Herb allows Lunala to raise its Special Attack and fire off a powerful Rock-type move on the same turn, allowing it to take out Yveltal and Ho-oh that try to come in on Lunala the defensive set. You cant cross-reference sets in analysis. The latter is OHKOed while the former drops to a subsequent Ice Beam. Taking out these Pokemon allows teammates that are checked by them to wreak havoc, while also raising Lunala's Special Attack to high levels. After this boost, Moongeist Beam can always 2HKO specially defensive Necrozma-DM, some variants of Eternatus why are you hitting Eternatus with Moongeist Beam when Ice Beam does more and has more PP?, defensive Xerneas, specially defensive Ferrothorn after Stealth Rocks and Clefable. I dont like that this is just a list of Pokemon, mention that these are common defensive pokemon that Lunala's teammates want weakened or something to connect them better. Ice Beam is important for finishing off Yveltal and Zarude while also OHKOing Zygarde-C, (AC) with a boost (if it hasn't transformed it gets OHKOed even without a boost) and Landorus-T, Rayquaza, (AC) and Landorus-I with or without. Furthermore, Groudon, Zekrom and physically defensive Zarude are OHKOed with a boost after Stealth Rocks, and 2HKOed without. Mention Ice Beam also hits the other targets in the tier, but there's no need to make it a new sentence, just add "and is Lunala's strongest attack against other foes weak to Ice" after Lando-I mention. Mention Timid being preferred over Modest for Rayquaza, no need to mention the other stuff in this final sentence imo. You need to mention somewhere in this paragraph that Meteor Beam is a one-time move, and that without this boost Lunala isnt nearly so threatening. Instead of tacking on a point about Shadow Shield after saying what it hits, mention explicitly that Lunala is still capable of defensively checking opposing threats like Ray/Groudon thanks to Shadow Shield, and thus it retains some of its defensive utility in spite of the offensive set, but that this is contingent on there being no Rocks on the field.

Calyrex-S is a fantastic partner, (AC) and one of the main reasons to use this set, as after Yveltal is gone it can clean an opposing team. As Lunala helps break opposing Ghost-type answers like Yveltal and Zarude. Be aware that while tricking it a Choice item can create even more pressure, Yveltal with a Choice Scarf can KO Lunala before it can use Ice Beam. Marshadow and Necrozma-DM are also great teammates that appreciates both Yveltal and Ho-oh gone. Blissey and Tyranitar are hard counters to this set, although Blissey has to fear a Psyshock, stop this set cold, so teammates that can deal with them such as Marshadow, Zygarde and Groudon help Lunala out a lot. Answers to Calyrex-S and Marshadow such as Yveltal and Xerneas are important as they can stop a sweep from Lunala cold. Finally, a cleric such as Xerneas or Blissey is very helpful for keeping Shadow Shield up. Mention Defog support, since you no longer have boots. I'd mention this before the cleric stuff.

Mention Psyshock here in the Meteor Beam set, and explain why it isnt so common (only hits Blissey and Toxapex for relevant damage given Etern is 2HKOd by Ice Beam and Roost is very good for Lunala cause of Shadow Shield).

**Dark-types**: Dark-type Pokemon hit Lunala for massive damage while resisting its STAB moves. Yveltal threatens it Lunala with Knock Off and Foul Play, but must be wary of Meteor Beam sets and doesn't appreciate being burned is vulnerable to status and Ice Beam. Furthermore, it has to watch out for Meteor Beam. Zarude can cure status with Jungle Healing but it cannot take Meteor Beam into Ice Beam. Urshifu-S speed ties with Lunala and can OHKO it with Wicked Blow, although it does not appreciate status conditions resists all of Lunala's common attacks but hates to be burned or paralyzed.

Lunala cannot take many of the Ghost-type attacks in the tier, Calyrex-S and Marshadow outspeed and threaten to OHKO Lunala, while Giratina-O can pick off a weakened Lunala thanks to Shadow Sneak.

**Blissey**: Blissey doesn't care about anything Lunala does, though if it isn't carrying Shadow Ball it can't do much back except status Lunala. Confide foils attempts to rack up repeated Meteor Beam boosts. It has to be wary of Psyshock on Meteor Beam sets though.

**Status Conditions**: You can rewrite a lot of the below points into the same by grouping them together with status as the common factor. For the below two, focus on their ability to shrug off defensive Lunala's ways of making progress through their bulk, and incorporate the status elements more into this point.

Mention Scald burns and Kyogre setting up or firing off powerful attacks on Lunala, especially if the Lunala is not running Roar.

A lot of the content in this was technically right, but either phrased weirdly or not in line with the GP standards. Ping me again, either in this thread or on discord, and I'll give this a once-over after you've implemented this stuff, and then I'll give the first stamp. Try to obey the Grammar Standards too when implementing the comments, I want to be focused on the content rather than fixing the grammar given that I tend to suck at grammar stuff myself.
