OP adapted from Orphic's old thread, which was adapted from unfixable's old thread.
Lures have been around in Pokemon since its conception, acting as sets that draw in the Pokemon's usual checks or counters and expose their weaknesses with surprise factor, be it by KO'ing, weakening, or crippling them for a teammate to take advantage of. While a good lure can often perform a much-needed role to your team, they're often hit and miss and some can prove to be a waste. A bad lure may be good for one thing, but sacrifices a key component of what makes it viable in the first place. For example, while Nasty Plot Cacturne might seem good on paper to break pasr defensive teams, it lacks any way to handle offensive teams, and you're almost always better off using the standard Mixed Attacker set.
Similarly to other projects, each week I will nominate a common wall or threat that teams typically struggle with, while the NU community will nominate the lures they find effective over the following week. Please provide a description of your lure with calcs to back it up; replays are heavily encouraged, however not nesecary.
After the week has passed, I will pick a 3 winners for the best and or most creative lure to the given threat. The winner and their lure will be saved and archived.
Things to consider when nominating a lure:
1. Does this Pokemon have to sacrifice anything important? If you're losing a key part of a set just for an uncommon threat that isn't even lured in that well, it's not worth it and this is usually a bad lure.
2. Does this Pokemon consistently perform its role? If you're sacrificing too much and not benefiting from its unique role on a regular basis, it's not a good lure.
3. Does this Pokemon gain anything important when using this moveset? The contrary to point number one, does this pokemon or the team benefit from the lure.
4. Could this method be better aided through teammates? Does your lure need team support to carry out it's role effectively? If so, it's probably not worth using.
So at this point you might be asking yourself, but Earth, how will I go about making posts to show off my cool new lures! Well you're in luck, because here's some examples I've whipped up!
Example of a bad lure:
Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Growl
- Thunder Wave
- Knock Off
I Beat The Linoone With This Set Its Good
Example of a good lure:
Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Bullet Punch
- Stone Edge
Stone Edge Hariyama proves to be an effective lure in the current metagame, hitting the Flying-types, namely Pelipper, Scyther, and Mantine, that would otherwise check Hariyama quite effectively, with the added bonus of hitting Xatu past its potential Colbur Berry. Good partners for this set would be the likes of Swords Dance Samurott or Steelix, who appreciate and can take advantage of these Flying-types being lured.
