Gen 1 Machamp (UU Mini) [QC 2/2] [GP 1/1]

[OVERVIEW]

Machamp hits very hard with its staggering 130 base Attack, which is tied for the second-highest in the game. Its high Attack is complemented by access to STAB Submission and powerful coverage options like Earthquake and Rock Slide. Unfortunately, Machamp is very slow, outsped by almost everything in UU, meaning it requires extensive paralysis support to function. However, teams that fixate only on spreading paralysis are quite flawed, and other slow powerhouses such as Golem tend to fit on them better than Machamp. The low Speed means it also cannot deal with any of the partial-trapping move users in UU, even getting Bind locked by Tangela. This slowness is compounded by its Psychic weakness and mediocre Special bulk, meaning threats like Hypno, Kadabra, and even Electabuzz can exploit it. On top of that, Submission's recoil and accuracy can be very difficult to deal with at times. Overall, Machamp's offensive power is not enough to make up for its myriad of issues, making it not worth using in RBY UU.

Name: All-out Attacker

move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Rock Slide
move 4: Body Slam / Hyper Beam

[SET COMMENTS]

Machamp’s powerful STAB Submission can deal with common Normal-types, 2HKOing Kangaskhan and having a small chance to OHKO Persian, while denting anything that doesn't resist it. Earthquake OHKOes Haunter and 2HKOes Kadabra and Tentacruel (RC) while being a decently strong neutral hit on most foes when Submission's recoil is undesired. Rock Slide allows Machamp to hit Dodrio and Articuno hard, and it can KO the latter from 80% HP and below. Note that Rock Slide cannot 2HKO Dragonite, meaning Machamp usually still ends up as setup fodder for it. Body Slam lets Machamp attempt to spread paralysis while scouting for switch-ins, allowing it to outspeed them the next turn. Alternatively, Hyper Beam is a devastatingly strong attack that can finish off many paralyzed and slightly weakened threats, giving Machamp some late-game sweeping potential.

Toxic can be used to cripple partial trapping move users like Dragonite, Tangela, and the rare Pinsir, causing them to take more damage than they deal when using them. This notably helps against AgiliWrap Dragonite, which can otherwise cause a game-ending scenario. Alternatively, Fire Blast can attempt to burn Tentacruel, which is immune to Toxic, as well as cripple Dragonite, though it is much less reliable than Toxic in the latter case. Fire Blast also 3HKOes both Venusaur and Tangela (RC) and can cripple physical attackers that switch in such as Dodrio and Gyarados. Counter is another solid option, as Machamp's high HP is well suited for use of this move. It can switch into Hyper Beams and deal back massive damage while the foe is recharging, and it can also OHKO Persian using Slash. However, if the opponent is aware of Counter, they can easily play around it, causing it to lose most of its value. Low Kick is a niche alternative to Submission that trades power for accuracy, no recoil, and a flinch chance. Low Kick opens up paraflinch strategies that can surprise opponents. For example, Machamp can use Low Kick to chip a paralyzed Dodrio or Gyarados into range of its Rock Slide and have a better chance of defeating them than relying on paralysis alone. However, Low Kick misses crucial 2HKOs on Dewgong and Kangaskhan from full HP. Machamp necessitates paralysis support to be effective, so it enjoys the company of Hypno, Electabuzz, and Kadabra. These Pokemon also make up for Machamp's weaknesses, as Hypno and Kadabra resist Psychic while Electabuzz resists Flying. Body Slam users such as Dodrio and Kangaskhan can also assist in spreading paralysis to help enable Machamp.

This is a good start, you've got basically all the facts down bar a couple of handy OOs. Implement and get back to me.

[OVERVIEW]

Machamp no doubt hits very hard with its staggering 130 base attack, tied with Rhydon and others for the second-highest in the game, only behind Dragonite. (The start of this sentence implies there should be a catch, maybe end with "but this doesn't make a Pokemon viable on its own" or something like that. Think about it for a little bit and see what comes up.) It also gets access to Complementing this is a wide range of powerful coverage options like Earthquake and Rock Slide, on top of STAB Submission. (This links in with the previous sentence, so alternatively, you could remove the negative connotation of "Machamp no doubt hits very hard" and go from there) However, Machamp is very slow, outsped by almost everything in UU, and somewhat frail, especially on the special side. While the Speed issue can be worked around, the final nail in Machamp’s coffin is its Psychic weakness, in a tier where Hypno and Kadabra dominate. Overall, Machamp’s lack of defensive utility makes it a subpar choice in RBY UU. Overall, Machamp is an offensive juggernaut, but it provides no defensive utility in return to the point of being a detriment to a team, making it a very rare sight in RBY UU.

Consider rewording the Speed area. You could possibly go "However, Machamp is painfully slow, mandating paralysis support to function. This is exacerbated by its mediocre Special bulk and Psychic weakness, which common threats like Hypno, Kadabra, and even Electabuzz can exploit.". This flows a bit better than what you've got right now, but it isn't an objectively better change.

[SET COMMENTS]

Machamp’s powerful STAB Submission devastates common Normal-types in like Kangaskhan and Persian, (RC) while denting anything that does not doesn't (reducing syllables for flow) resist it. Earthquake OHKOes Haunter and 2HKOes Kadabra, while being an overall safe attack to use when Submission’s recoil is undesired. Rock Slide allows Machamp to hit Dodrio and Articuno hard, and it can KO the latter from 80% HP and below. Note that Rock Slide cannot 2HKO Dragonite, meaning it can switch in and force Machamp out once or twice while picking up an Agility boost. Body Slam can help Machamp alleviate its low speed by Paralyzing opposing Pokemon Body Slam lets Machamp be more self-sufficient in spreading paralysis while scouting for switch-ins, allowing Machamp it to outspeed them the next turn. (this better explains the reasoning, self-sufficient para is big) Alternatively, Hyper Beam is a devastatingly strong attack that can finish off many paralyzed and slightly weakened threats, giving Machamp better late-game sweeping potential.

(adding linebreak to make an OO paragraph, it has a good offensive movepool we should tap into)

The last slot can also use Fire Blast to 3HKO Tangela and Venusaur, while also threatening physical attackers with Burns that can essentially KO them.(Dragonite and especially Tentacruel are also big victims for burns, the latter of which is immune to Toxic.) Machamp necessitates paralysis support to be effective, so it enjoys the company of Hypno, Electabuzz, and Kadabra. (You also really need Hypno and/or Kadabra for their Psychic resistances, and Electabuzz resists Flying, so these mons actually form resist cores with Machamp. Vaporeon is another good splashable mon to make up for its crap special bulk if you wanna chuck that in somewhere.)

Add Toxic here for the Dragonite matchup, as otherwise, it's setup fodder. It's a big deterrent to having this thing even touch the tier. If you give AgiliWrap Dragonite even a turn, any damage you've dealt prior is almost meaningless. Counter is another solid option for making Persian OHKO itself, and you can also have Machamp switch in on Hyper Beams to use it consistently. Its HP+Def is just perfect for Counter, I really like using it. Finally, Low Kick is a good option for those who hate recoil and like the better accuracy, as you don't lose out on too much. It lets Machamp do ParaFlinch strats due to how it works in RBY; think of it as a Fighting-type Stomp. You still 2HKO Raticate and Persian, though you miss out on Kangaskhan and Dewgong if they're at full HP. I recommend it alongside Hyper Beam to make up for this.

The last slot can also use Fire Blast to 3HKO Tangela and Venusaur, while also threatening physical attackers with Burns that can essentially KO them. Burns also cripple Tentacruel and Dragonite that try and switch in, outdamaging their use of Wrap. Machamp can also use Toxic, (RC) in order to not be setup fodder for Dragonite, which can otherwise get Agility boosts for free and run away with the game with a Wrap sweep. (you need to be specific when explaining why these moves help with Wrap since it's not something one can understand off the bat) Counter is another solid option, as Machamp's HP and Defense are well suited for use of this move; it can switch into Hyper Beams and deal back strike back for massive damage while the opponent is recharging, and can also OHKO Persian using Slash. Low Kick is a niche alternative to Submission that trades power for accuracy, no recoil, and a flinch chance. It may be appropriate to focus on Tentacruel since it's immune to Toxic, in which we move the Toxic section to the first bit. What I had in mind was "Machamp can use Toxic to cause Dragonite, Tangela, and Pinsir to take more damage than they deal when using their partial trapping moves. This notably prevents Dragonite from attempting an AgiliWrap sweep. Alternatively, Fire Blast can be used to burn Tentacruel in addition to these, forcing a much earlier Rest should it keep pivoting out. It also allows Machamp to hit Grass-types like Venusaur.". It flows much better while keeping all prior Toxic information applicable. Play around with the idea and see what drops if you want, it's completely subjective!

Obigatory "Not a QCer so take what i say with a grain of salt".

One of Machamp's few strongpoints is that its physical bulk isnt one to scoff at, even if its special bulk is.

Dugtrio Rock Slide vs. Machamp: 27-32 (7 - 8.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Dugtrio Earthquake vs. Machamp: 109-129 (28.4 - 33.6%) -- 0.1% chance to 3HKO

Kangaskhan Body Slam vs. Machamp: 104-123 (27.1 - 32.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
Machamp Submission vs. Kangaskhan: 241-284 (58.3 - 68.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Stuff like this is rather relevant, so mentioning its physical bulk a bit more in overview would be helpful. Its a big part of what you'll be doing with it in a game. Also, just reword the mentions of "poor defensive utility" to "poor specially defensive utility" or something to reflect this.

Okay, here we go. Hope this is a quick one.

Machamp hits very hard with its staggering 130 base attack, tied with Rhydon and others for the second-highest in the game, only behind Dragonite.
There is no good reason to mention Rhydon here. Rhydon isn't even in UU. Saying Machamp is in a tie for the second-highest base Attack is enough.

Complementing this is access to a wide range of powerful coverage options like Earthquake and Rock Slide, on top of STAB Submission.
"Machamp's high base Attack is complemented by STAB Submission and powerful coverage options like Earthquake and Rock Slide."

However, Machamp is very slow, outsped by almost everything in UU, meaning it requires Paralysis support to function. This issue is compounded by its Psychic weakness and mediocre Special bulk, meaning threats like Hypno, Kadabra, and even Electabuzz can exploit it. Overall, Machamp's offensive power is not enough to make up for its lack of defensive utility, making it a very rare sight in RBY UU.
Machamp is a pretty horrific Pokemon in UU and I don't know why anyone would ever use it. Frankly, I really think we should prioritize an OU Analysis and skip it for UU entirely, but I digress. You have should illustrate Machamp's weaknesses more clearly. Machamp speed ties Omastar and is slower than everything else in the tier. This thing gets Bind-locked by Tangela. You need to Paralyze pretty much the entire team before Machamp has a chance to do anything. Paralysis spam builds are borderline unviable in UU and if you are going to use them, making Machamp your sweeper at the end is probably not a great idea (in case you are curious, Golem is the best option on Paralysis Offense teams in my opinion). This means constructing teams for Machamp is immensely difficult and generally not rewarding. Slow Pokemon without status moves have a ton of trouble in UU and supporting them generally isn't even worth it. This is all on top of the fact that Machamp has some really bad weaknesses and is forced to rely on one of the most painful moves in the game, Submission. Calling Machamp a "very rare sight" honestly might be too generous. I'm pretty sure Machamp is just unviable in UU.

Machamp’s powerful STAB Submission devastates common Normal-types like Kangaskhan and Persian while denting anything that doesn't resist it.
You got to be more clear than "devastates." This makes me think Machamp is getting like OHKOes or dealing like 80%. Machamp can occasionally OHKO Persian, sure, but it only does about half to Kangaskhan, so you should probably try to discriminate these two more. Additionally, Machamp can't really switch into either of these Pokemon, even at full health.

Earthquake OHKOes Haunter and 2HKOes Kadabra, while being an overall safe attack to use when Submission’s recoil is undesired.
Not really. RBY UU contains five major Flying-type Pokemon, so this isn't a move you really want to be using haphazardly, especially considering these Pokemon are decently likely to be a primary switch-in against Machamp. I think Earthquake is basically just for Haunter and Tentacruel. Otherwise, it is just a decently strong neutral hit, in which case Body Slam is arguably better.

Note that Rock Slide cannot 2HKO Dragonite, meaning it can switch in and force Machamp out once or twice while picking up Agility boosts.
I don't know what this sentence means. Also, Machamp without Toxic is simply set-up fodder for Dragonite. Dragonite can use Agility, click Wrap, and basically end the game. Probably worth mentioning that this matchup is horrible and Dragonite needs to be dealt with in some way before Machamp should ever even come on the field.

Body Slam allows Machamp to be self-sufficient in spreading Paralysis while scouting for switch-ins, allowing it to outspeed them the next turn.
The word "self-sufficient" is a little too generous here. Machamp is going to need a lot more than its own Body Slams if it expects to sweep or even really wall break.

Alternatively, Hyper Beam is a devastatingly strong attack that can finish off many paralyzed and slightly weakened threats, giving Machamp good late-game sweeping potential.
Replace "good" with "some."

Alternatively, Fire Blast can be used to attempt to Burn and cripple Tentacruel, which is immune to Toxic, while still handling Dragonite well.
"...while still being a little helpful for Dragonite." Don't count on a 25.5% chance when the stakes include the potential to just lose outright.

Counter is another solid option, as Machamp's HP and Defense are well suited for use of this move. It can switch into Hyper Beams and deal back massive damage while the opponent is recharging, and can also OHKO Persian using Slash.
I'm not going to say Counter is useless, but practically speaking, what is Machamp actually Countering? Aren't most Normal-type Pokemon going to switch if Machamp isn't in KO range?

Low Kick can sometimes allow Machamp to use ParaFlinch strategies that can surprise opponents.
This sentence is pretty vague.

However, Low Kick misses 2HKOs on Dewgong and Kangaskhan from full HP, meaning it is best used alongside Hyper Beam.
Can you elaborate on this?

This still requires a fair amount of work. Please let me know when this is implemented or if you have any questions.

Minor stuff, I hope.

Machamp hits very hard with its staggering 130 base attack, tied for the second-highest in the game. Machamp's high base attack is complemented by access STAB Submission and a wide range of powerful coverage options like Earthquake and Rock Slide.
"...attack, which is tied for..."
"...access to STAB Submission...

However, paralysis spam teams are quite flawed in UU, and Golem usually makes a better sweeper on them.
"However, teams that fixate only on spreading paralysis are quite flawed, and other sweepers such as Golem tend to fit better than Machamp."

On top of that, Submission's recoil can be very difficult to deal with at times.
Note the poor accuracy as well.

Alternatively, Fire Blast can be used to attempt to Burn and cripple Tentacruel, which is immune to Toxic, while still attempting to handle Dragonite.
"Alternatively, Fire Blast can be used to attempt to Burn and cripple Tentacruel, which is immune to Toxic, as well as Dragonite, though it is much less reliable than Toxic in the latter case."

Fire Blast also 3HKOes both Venusaur and Tangela, and can cripple Physical attackers that switch in.
Such as?

Counter is another solid option, as Machamp's HP and Defense are well suited for use of this move.
I'd remove the mention of Defense and just say "Machamp's high HP stat..."

Low Kick can sometimes allow Machamp to use ParaFlinch strategies that can surprise opponents, forcing them to make predictable plays that can sometimes be taken advantage of.
This is still pretty confusing to me. Maybe provide an example?

However, Low Kick misses 2HKOs on Dewgong and Kangaskhan from full HP, meaning it is best used alongside Hyper Beam to be able to finish them more easily.
I'd just remove mention of Hyper Beam in relation to Low Kick. I don't really know if we have enough evidence to make claims concerning what the best Low Kick Machamp set is.

Machamp necessitates paralysis support to be effective, so it enjoys the company of Hypno, Electabuzz, and Kadabra. These Pokemon also make up for Machamp's weaknesses, as Hypno and Kadabra resist Psychic while Electabuzz resists Flying.
I've noticed that Body Slam users like Dodrio and Kangaskhan also tend to be decent additions to Paraysis Spam teams so maybe mention them.

Implement this, ping me, and I'll probably give the QC. Looks pretty good.
