Gen 1 Magmar (UU Mini) [DONE]

EC2CB0E0-4757-470A-9FB3-647DBCEB368B.png

[OVERVIEW]
Magmar is an unviable Pokemon in RBY UU, being frail and easily beaten by many common Pokemon such as Tentacruel, Hypno, and Gyarados. Dugtrio is also an issue, since Magmar is in Earthquake range if it has taken any slight chip damage, although Dugtrio doesn’t appreciate a burn or paralysis. While Magmar may appear to be good due to its fantastic movepool, its low stats and bad typing combined with its movepool not hitting Pokemon such as Hypno and Tentacruel severely holds it back. Other Fire-types that are similarly not good in the metagame, such as Moltres, offer much more then Magmar does to a team. While it does possess Confuse Ray, which can annoy a Pokemon, Magmar is still not a good choice for any competitive team.

[SET]
name: Special Attacker
move 1: Fire Blast
move 2: Body Slam
move 3; Confuse Ray
move 4: Psychic

[SET COMMENTS]
Fire Blast is Magmar's best STAB move and has a useful 30% chance to burn. Body Slam makes use of Magmar's Attack and can paralyze an opposing Pokemon, which works well in tandem with Confuse Ray. Lastly, Psychic can 4HKO Tentacrue, which can be improved by Special drops.

Banned deucer.
Thanks for helping out!

So for the Overview, I have a few spellcheck things before I get into the nitty-gritty.
Magmar is an unviable Pokemon in RBY UU, being frail and easily beaten by many common Pokemon such as Tentacruel, Hypno, Gyrados Gyarados, and Dugtrio. Other Fire-types that are similarly not good in the metagame, (AC) such as Moltres, (AC) offer much more then Magmar does to a team. While it does posses possess Confuse Ray which can annoy a Pokemon, Magmar is still not a good choice for any competitive team.
The Dugtrio matchup should be emphasized more. If Magmar has taken any amount of damage, it's in Dug range and will get KOed. It's one of those wildly inconsistent ranges and Dug will naturally end up risking burn or para from Fire Blast or Body Slam, but it's still an extremely one-sided matchup.
  • Dugtrio Earthquake vs. Magmar: 262-308 (78.6 - 92.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
The core issue of Magmar is that while it has one of the best movepools in the game, it just lacks the stats and typing to make good use of it. Like, you can build Magmar in many ways, but it'll always still be Magmar. Fire Blast, Body Slam, Confuse Ray, Psychic, Counter, Submission, Hyper Beam...there's a lot of options. On paper, it should be super viable, but it clearly isn't: this is what you should preface in the analysis.

One thing that could be mentioned regarding its movepool is that while it's excellent, it doesn't actually hit the tier that well. You mention the usual suspects and that's great, but you could restructure this to say "...despite its amazing coverage on paper, it fails to let it beat common Pokemon such as..." and so on.

Now for the Set Details. Got some spellcheck stuff here too.
This set is awful, but probably the best option for Magmar. Fire Blast is Magmar's best STAB and has a maybe useful 30% chance to Burn. Confuse Ray can try to cheese an opposing Pokemon in junction (combination?) with paralysis. Body Slam might paralyse a foe switching into Magmar such as Tentacruel or Gyrados Gyarados and can work well with Confuse Ray if it paralyses. Lastly, Psychic is Magmar's best option for hitting Tentacruel.
Again, the set isn't the issue, Magmar itself is. This needs to be emphasized as Magmar is a Pokemon that technically works on paper, but fails due to stats and typing. I think you should swap Body Slam and Confuse Ray as it seems you say the same thing twice; something like "Body Slam makes use of Magmar's Attack and can paralyze an opposing Pokemon, which works well in tandem with Confuse Ray." would do the job. Lastly, Psychic is a 4HKO on Tentacruel that can be better with special drops, so you may as well add that in rather than just say it's for Tentacruel. No harm, eh?
