Draft Magnezone

[overview]
**Draft Order**: Round 7 onwards

**Price Range**: 5-6 points

**Overview**: In theory, Magnezone is a powerful wallbreaker and slow pivot with three powerful and versatile abilities, including Magnet Pull. However, it struggles due to its poor Speed, awkward Electric / Steel typing, and lack of coverage. It gets outsped by nearly every notable offensive foe, many of which can hit it super effectively. It gets walled by opposing Electric-types, and Ground-types prevent it from pivoting and threaten it back with 4x super effective attacks. Magnet Pull is good in theory, but it cannot beat most notable Steel-types one-on-one without Terastallization, and it is very easy for opponents to give their Steel-types a Shed Shell.

[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Bulky Offensive**: With its already-great bulk and typing, Magnezone can take hits from many wallbreakers and threaten large amounts of damage in return. It can slowly pivot with Volt Switch, and it can even be paired with Analytic to deal even more damage. With enough Speed investment, it can also catch faster bulky foes off guard by outspeeding them.

**Trapper**: With Magnet Pull, Magnezone can be built to trap and KO problematic Steel-types to enable its teammates. The strategy strongly depends on what Steel-type the opponent has, but Choice Scarf can catch faster ones, and IronPress can beat some physically offensive ones. Air Balloon is often necessary to reliably beat foes that have Ground-type coverage.

Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Volt Switch, Discharge, Thunderbolt, Flash Cannon

**Setup Moves**: Iron Defense

**Utility Moves**: Reflect, Light Screen, Thunder Wave, Rest, Sleep Talk, Substitute

**Coverage**: Tera Blast, Body Press

Niche Moves
========
**Magnet Rise**: Magnet Rise helps Magnezone deal with Ground-types, but it is often difficult to use due to its horrible Speed. Magnet Rise is best used when a Ground-type is predicted to enter the field that turn.

**Charge Beam**: Magnezone can use Charge Beam to boost its Special Attack, allowing it to break through walls that it would otherwise struggle to beat.

**Steel Beam**: Magnezone can deal a massive amount of damage with STAB Steel Beam while KOing itself to bring in a teammate safely. This can also be paired with Sturdy + Custap Berry to be used reliably.

**Electroweb**: Electroweb can be used to stop Speed-boosting setup sweepers or slow faster foes down to potentially let Magnezone outspeed them.

**Mirror Coat**: Magnezone can trade itself by KOing a special wallbreaker with Mirror Coat + Sturdy.

Common Items
========
**Air Balloon**: With its massive weakness to Ground, Air Balloon is often needed to take hits and avoid unexpected coverage, especially on sets without Sturdy.

**Leftovers**: Magnezone's good bulk and typing allow it to be a solid defensive Pokemon that can stay healthy with Leftovers, especially since it does not fear entry hazards much.

**Custap Berry**: With Sturdy, Magnezone can surprise a foe by outspeeding it, often using a powerful move like Steel Beam. This works especially great against opposing wincons.

**Resistance Berries**: While Ground-type moves still do lots of damage to Magnezone with a Shuca Berry, it can be preferable if it expects to take damage beforehand. Chople and Occa Berry are also great ways for it to lure Fighting- and Fire-types, respectively.

Niche Items
========
**Heavy-Duty Boots**: Heavy-Duty Boots helps keep Magnezone's Sturdy intact against teams with entry hazard setters.

**Damage-boosting items**: While Magnezone's Special Attack is already great, it can sometimes benefit from a little more power from items like Magnet and Choice Specs.

**Choice Scarf**: Magnezone can surprise foes by outspeeding them with a Choice Scarf, but it still fails to outpace many unboosted foes, making it easy to revenge kill afterwards.

**Light Clay**: Magnezone can set dual screens and slowly pivot to teammates that can benefit from them. Light Clay ensures that they have plenty of time to take advantage of the reduced damage.

**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest can make Magnezone a solid check to special wallbreakers while still being able to pivot and deal large amounts of damage.

Tera
========
Magnezone makes for a solid secondary Tera Captain, as Terastallization helps patch most of its major weaknesses. Tera Flying is a common way to check Ground-types, especially ones that it wants to trap, such as Iron Treads. Tera Ground, Fire, and Fighting help it break through typical checks with Tera Blast, and they can also help against Steel-types. It can also benefit from defensive Tera types like Fairy, Poison, and Water to check specific foes.

Draft Strategy
========
Magnezone is an awkward Pokemon to use due to its poor Speed, lack of coverage, and weakness to Ground. It should typically be considered on teams that lack a more viable Steel-type, need additional offensive power, and are not concerned about opposing Ground-types.

**Ground-type Checks**: Magnezone invites Ground-types onto the field, so it appreciates teammates that can safely switch in on their attacks and handle them in return, like Landorus, Uxie, and Rillaboom.

**Pivots**: Pivots like Meowscarada, Palafin, and Landorus-T can safely bring Magnezone in on foes that lack the necessary coverage to beat it or Steel-types that it can trap. In return, Magnezone can slowly pivot to bring them in safely.

**Knock Off Users**: When Magnezone wants to trap and KO Steel-types, teammates that can remove their Shed Shell like Hisuian Samurott, Tornadus-T, and Zarude are important to have.

**Steel-weak Pokemon**: Magnezone can trap and remove problematic Steel-types or force them to run Shed Shell, allowing teammates that struggle against them like Ogerpon and Deoxys-S to shine.

Checks and Counters
========
**Faster Foes**: Magnezone almost never gets to move first, especially against offensive foes that can threaten a lot of damage on it before it can do anything. While it has Sturdy, it often wants to maintain it, and pivoting moves and entry hazards can easily nullify it.

**Ground-types**: Ground-types can easily switch in on Magnezone to block it from using Volt Switch and threaten a KO in return. It especially struggles against foes that also resist Flash Cannon, such as Swampert and Iron Treads.

**Electric-types**: Magnezone's STAB combination is not very effective against Electric-types, allowing them to easily wall it. While many Electric-types struggle hitting it in return, some have ways to do so, including Sandy Shocks, Iron Hands, and Bellibolt.

**Shed Shell**: Steel-types that are prone to being trapped, such as Corviknight and Empoleon, can easily use a Shed Shell to swap out and bring in a Ground-type on the expected Volt Switch.
