[SET]
name: RestTalk
move 1: Superpower
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
item: Leftovers
ability: Contrary
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 184 SpD / 72 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
This set looks to take advantage of Contrary Superpower, which allows Malamar to set up and sweep. Furthermore, Malamar's special bulk allows it to check Ghost- and Psychic-types as well as other special attackers, such as Cursola, Froslass, Indeedee-F, Rotom-S, and Rotom-F. Knock Off hits Ghost-types hard, which prevent Malamar from boosting, in addition to providing excellent utility in removing items. Rest and Sleep Talk give Malamar much needed staying power and prevents status from cutting a sweep short. Sleep Talk can also help alleviate Superpower's low PP, which can come into play in longer battles. The Speed EVs allow Malamar to outspeed Drampa and Adamant Perrserker, which prevent them from reliably revenge killing it.
Malamar works well on bulkier Spikes-stacking teams; it is effective at crippling or taking advantage of foes that can be problematic for such builds, such as Heavy-Duty Boots Eldegoss with Pollen Puff, Clefairy, and Hattrem. In particular, Garbodor and Qwilfish make excellent teammates. In addition to Spikes, they provide a crucial Bug-type resistance and means for punishing U-turn from the likes of the Silvally formes, Ninjask, and Perrserker if running Rocky Helmet. They can also switch in on Fairy-types and can potentially badly poison Quagsire and Cofagrigus with Toxic, both of which impede sweeps. In return, Malamar provides a valuable Psychic immunity and Ghost-type check. Malamar also appreciates teammates that help wear down Fairy-types. Drampa is particular functions well as a teammate because its powerful Hyper Voice combined with entry hazards and Knock Off from Malamar make it difficult for them to check both of these Pokemon. If running Sap Sipper, Drampa also exploits the usage of Eldegoss as a check to Malamar.
