Overview
########

  • The biggest reason to use Mamoswine is it's excellent Ice STAB. Ice Shard allows Mamoswine to quickly smash through nasty Pokémon like Garchomp and Salamence, and can be a life saver in tight situations. The Ice STAB in general is also great at beating Pokémon such as Amoonguss.
  • Excellent secondary stab in ground, allows Mamoswine to hit Steel-types like Mega Mawile hard.
  • 130 Base Attack makes it as powerful as Garchomp
  • smash Amoonguss, thanks to Icicle Crash /
  • The Ground-typing, Thick Fat, and decent bulk allows Mamoswine to last a lot longer than the other Physical Ice-type, Weavile. Having a spread move that can hit Steels is a big boon over it too.
  • Low Speed and mediocre Special Defense sadly makes it vulnerable to special threats such as Rotom-W and Mega Charizard-Y, both of whom are fairly common.
  • Extremely vulnerable to getting its attack lowered in many ways, such as Will-O-Wisp from the Rotoms, Intimidate, etc.
  • Mamoswine's secondary STAB will sadly damage any non levitating partners.
  • Vulnerable to priority moves such as Conkledurr's Mach Punch, Scizor's Bullet Punch, and to a lesser extent, and Talonflame's Brave Bird.

Physical Attacker
########

name: Physical Attacker
move 1: Ice Shard
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Icicle Crash / Icicle Spear
move 4: Protect
ability: Thick Fat
item: Life Orb / Focus Sash
evs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 60 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

  • Ice Shard is Mamoswine's trump card, allowing you to OHKO Garchomp and Salamence before they even have the chance to move! It's also great for picking off weakened foes.
  • Earthquake is Mamoswine's powerful spread move. It goes great with Mamoswine's Ice STAB, slamming foes like Mega Mawile and Tyranitar.
  • Icicle Crash is Mamoswine's secondary attack. It's great for smashing Amoonguss, hitting Earthquake immunities, and a good choice for when your partner can't afford to use Protect or get hit by Earthquake.
  • Icicle Spear is less reliable than Icicle Crash due to it's multi hit nature, but it can break through Focus Sashes from Pokémon like Garchomp.
  • Protect is Mamoswine's way of avoiding deadly attacks and Will-O-Wisp.

Set Details
========

  • The listed EV spread outspeeds 4 Speed Rotom-W, giving Mamoswine a chance of taking out a weakened one. However, Sine Rotom-W is known to Speed creep, feel free to add more speed if necessary, or even just use 4 speed evs to disengage from the speed war.
  • Mamoswine has plenty of options for items. Life Orb is among the best for it's ability to allow Mamoswine to snipe more Pokémon with Ice Shard. It also allows you to always OHKO Amoonguss with Icicle Crash, and OHKO Salamence after an intimidate 81.3% of the time.
  • If you are willing to trade KOs for survivability, go with Focus Sash. Focus Sash also allows Mamoswine to more comfortably run more speed instead of bulk.
  • If you want a compromise between power and survivability, consider Expert Belt or Never-Melt Ice. The KOs aren't as appealing as life orb, but the lack of recoil can be a life saver in tight situations.

Usage Tips
========

  • Mamoswine's two biggest targets are Salamence and Garchomp, and to a lesser extent, Amoonguss. However, you don't have to charge on with the Ice attacks right away. You can use the pressure Mamoswine gives off to predict a protect or switch to your benefit! For example, you could attack the other target instead of Garchomp or Salamence, or you can have you're other teammate hit a predicted switch-in.
  • While Mamoswine can be a good lead to pressure Salamence and Garchomp, consider saving Mamoswine for later in the match. Mamoswine can be at its deadliest when your opponent's team is worn down, ready to be sniped by Ice Shard. Using Mamoswine in the back also makes it less vulnerable to Intimidate.

Team Options
========
  • Rotom-W is Mamoswine's arch nemesis, so make sure you're team can handle it. A good approach is to carry some Grass-types. Good examples include Lum Berry Ferrothorn, Venusaur, and Ludicolo.
  • Mega Charizard Y can also be an issue with it's powerful Solarbeam. Fast Pokémon with Rock Slide such as Garchomp are generally good answers to this.
  • Mamoswine can be extra deadly when the team is worn down, so Fake Out Pokémon like Mega Kangaskhan and Scrafty, and Tyranitar's sand stream can do a good job of getting Pokémon in the KO range of Ice Shard. Assault Vest Ludicolo gets special mention for it's Earthquake resist, which can be handy in emergencies when Mamoswine has to use Earthquake.
  • Always consider a Ground immune Pokémon to pair with Mamoswine, as it allows Mamoswine to spread its deadly Earthquake more easily. Make sure to think beyond just the Earthquake immunity, and think about how they can support Mamoswine. For example, Rotom-W can provide damage lowering support in Will-O-Wisp and Light Screen + it defeats Gyarados, Talonflame can provide Tailwind support and defeat Ludicolo, Salamence can soften physical attacks with Intimidate, and Mega Charizard-Y can severely damage Rotom-W, Ludicolo, and other Mega Charizard Y (if you choose to use Ancient Power).

Other Options
########

  • A Choice Scarf set can be run with Icicle Spear, to outspeed and destroy Focus Sash Garchomp. It can also use Rock Slide with it to defeat Mega Charizard Y.
  • If you're willing to sacrifice more bulk and a moveslot, Mamoswine can run Freeze Dry with a Naive nature to OHKO Gyarados and 3HKO Rotom-W.
  • Oddly enough, Mamoswine gets access to Reflect and Light Screen. It's hard to fit them in, but they can be a surprise for your opponent.
  • Toxic can be an alright way to cripple Rotom-W switch-ins.
  • Rock Slide can be used as a way to hit Rotom-H, but sadly, Mamoswine is outsped by Mega Charizard Y, and Rotom-H may just Will-O-Wisp Mamoswine.
  • Lum Berry isn't as useful as it is on most physical attackers, sine Rotom-W will usually go for a Hydro Pump. However, you can use a Lum Berry with Icicle Spear to avoid Smeargle's Dark Void, and have a shot at OHKOing Smeargle through its Focus Sash.

Checks & Counters
########

  • Rotom-W is Mamoswine's biggest problem. It's immune to Earthquake, resists Icicle Crash, and can drown Mamoswine with Hydro Pump.
  • Simiarlly, Rotom-H resists Mamoswine's STABs, and can use Will-O-Wisp to burn Mamoswine.
  • Gyarados takes nuetral damage from Icicle Crash, and lowers Mamoswine's attack with Intimidate. Gyarados can then smash Mamoswine with Waterfall.
  • Scrafty's Intimidate and STAB Drain Punch can be very troublesome for Mamoswine.
  • Mega Charizard Y's good speed and sunny Solar Beam can defeat Mamoswine.
  • Ludicolo can be a big problem. Unlike other Grass-types, it isn't weak to Ice Shard, and under the rain, it will outspeed Mamoswine regardless of your speed investment. In a similar manner, Kingdra can usually outspeed and slam Mamoswine with Hydro Pump.
  • Conkledurr and Scizor can use their STAB priority moves to hit Mamoswine hard before it can Earthquake.
  • Although Mamoswine isn't fast, it can have problems with Trick Room teams, as Mega Mawile, a common member of these teams, will easily OHKO Mamoswine with Iron Head.
  • In general, Mamoswine's effectiveness can be greatly hampered with smart use of Intimidate.

Alright, this is ready for QC to check it out! I'm only in charge of the skeleton, and while I've played a lot of VGC lately, I'm still a bit new, so I may be missing some important stuff!

Cool stuff. I might change the first sentence about why to use mamo in general is for it's Ice STAB in general among Ice Shard and other things. I'd also like to see Choice Scarf and Freeze Dry see a mention in OO.

There's not too much else I see that needs to change, good job.

Once changes implemented: QC (1/2)

- Freeze dry also destroys gyarados... one of mamoswine's biggest counters. I think this is bigger than 3hkoing Rotom-W, so mention this too.
- Add Gyarados to checks and counters neutral to icicle crash but intimidate and hits back with waterfall.
- On top of not being hit by EQ Rotom-W is a good partner for killing Gyarados, it can burn Ferrothorn, and to work to other Rotom-W.
- I really don't think i'd ever run Lum on Mamoswine for the reasons you gave rotom-w will just go for hydros, I think Dark Void Smeargle is way to nichey to prepare for.
- Just give your thing fake out support with AV Ludicolo w/ Giga Drain... I've used that its fantastic... you can even use EQ on fake out cause ludi resists EQ but thats ballsy lol

Rest looks good take a look at what I said consider adding what you want to add. I trust you ... obviously to use your own judgement :p

neutral spa mamo's freeze dry can never ohko 252 hp gyara without helping hand or specs. at that point you might as well give it stone edge, so i really, really doubt it's even worth an OO mention

Freeze Dry is really helpful for both Rotom-W and Gyarados: hitting both harder than any of its other moves. I would definitely put it in OO, however state that the reason it is in OO is because it requires large amounts of investment in spec. attack get OHKOs that it needs to, but it can definitely get a useful 2HKO on Gyarados 100% of the time with no investment and with max investment neutral it prevents standard Rotom-W from activating its sitrus berry so that something else can deal with it in 1 hit.

about your point saying that it never OHKOs max HP gyarados without specs or helping hand:
  • 124 SpA Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 144-172 (84.2 - 100.5%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
  • 252 SpA Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 168-196 (98.2 - 114.6%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
I think any chance to OHKO is still the ability to OHKO, and I don't think Gyarados run max HP anyway - making your point about it irrelevant.

Theorymon, is this ever gettin written up?

Sorry, lost internet access for a week but: I was under the impression that I was only doing the skeleton here. I pretty much did this because the dex was supposedly going up soon. If someone else wants to make an analysis out of this, then by all means they should! I think I mentioned only doing the skeleton in the original OP, but I must have edited that out, sorry!
