SV OU Maushold + Hamurott help pls

Before you read this RMT, I just want to clear 2 things up. 1: This RMT is of the "I actually need help" variety rather than the "I want to show off this cool team I made" variety. 2: I realize that there are about 20 RMTs posted here daily, and most of them don't get more than a single response, if that. If you have suggestions for this, team, don't feel pressured to write a paragraph about what the set does or whatever. I can figure that out through playtesting.

With that out of the way, the RMT:

:sv/Samurott-Hisui: black + scottish @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sharpness
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ceaseless Edge
- Sucker Punch
- Razor Shell
- Sacred Sword

You know him, you (maybe) despise him, iiiiiiitt's Hisuin Samurott! This thing sets spikes and acts as a good check to Kingambit and Gholdengo, who I believe are the two of the three most common and threatening pokemon right now, the other being Valiant. Assault Vest means it also has less fear switching into random stuff like Glowking Sludge Bombs and Heatran Magma Storms, giving it the opportunity to lay spikes more than once per game. 4th favorite nickname on the team

:sv/Great Tusk: tiny baby man @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Ice Spinner
- Headlong Rush
- Stealth Rock

It's Offensive Tusk™, offensive and tusky as ever. Provides Spin support for my rocks-weak defensive pokemon, especially Zap as it frequently is tasked with taking Knock Offs over the game. Ice Spinner is for checking Dnite, who is otherwise a serious threat to the team, and can pop Gholdengo's Air Balloon in a pinch. Ground is the default Tera because realistically I'm never Terastalizing it and no other Tera sticks out as immediately better. Least favorite nickname on the team

:sv/Maushold: visit your mother @ Wide Lens
Ability: Technician
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Tidy Up
- Population Bomb
- Bite
- Encore

The star of the team. Maushold's Population Bomb is absolutely nutty after a tidy up boost, OHKOing stuff like Rockpon and Offensive Tusk and getting 2HKOs on Gambit and Corv after rocks. Bite is Technician boosted and deals with Ghosts; Encore is general utility and can lock things like Gambit into Sucker or Zap into Roost, allowing setup. You'd think Tidy Up has negative synergy with Hamurott, but in most situations Maushold isn't using Tidy Up until the end of the game anyway when booster energies have been used on Valiant and Ghold is chipped enough to be KO'd by Bite, where hazards don't matter as much anyway. Favorite nickname on the team (but curse the nickname limit for not allowing the "well, off to" at the beginning)

:sv/Gholdengo: chucklenuts @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Good as Gold
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Make It Rain
- Trick
- Shadow Ball
- Recover

Speed control and secondary Gholdengo + Valiant Check. Standard set. Recover is for having some sustain against bulkier teams. I originally had Focus Blast there instead, but Kingambit doesn't love getting tricked anyway. Fairy Tera was to resist Sucker Punches from Gambit when I had focus blast, but I'm not sure what to change it to now. Second favorite nickname on the team.

:sv/Zapdos: fat bald fatty fat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Static
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 Spe
- Thunder Wave
- Roost
- Hurricane
- Volt Switch

Physically defensive pivot. Provides paralysis support and checks Waterpon and BU Tusk, who is unusually threatening to this team. Pivots with Volt Switch, speed IVs are for the slower volt switch vs other Zapdos. Water Tera is again because I've found nothing better and am usually teraing somet 3rd favorite nickname on the team.

:sv/Skeledirge: outsmart BOOLET (F) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Unaware
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 228 SpD / 32 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Will-O-Wisp
- Torch Song
- Slack Off

Specially defensive wall, downright counters a lot of stuff that was giving this team trouble, such as Iron Moth and Valiant due to them outspeed scarf Ghold. Speed EVs are to outspeed paralyzed Ogerpon, which comes up more often than you'd think. Hex is for better damage on neutral targets like Alomomomomola, who I fucking despise. 5th favorite nickname on the team.

I think the (or 'a') problem with this team is that I specifically prepare for the same threats that I know I'm going to be facing (gambit val ghold), rather than actually being a good team that is actually strong. For example, my team is really weak to Rockpon, but I don't know what I can change without leaving massive holes. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Nice team, love the TF2-themed nicknames!

One thing I notice is you want Maushold to be a star on your team but have no Knock Off in case of Rocky Helmet. Actually, no Knock Off in general is kinda weird since you are hazard stacking. Obviously your choices are Great Tusk and Hamurott. If you want to keep current items, I'd say Knock > Spinner on Great Tusk since you have Tera Fairy Skeledirge (which usually wants to Tera anyways and honestly just eats Dragonite EQ and Wisps in return without Tera) to check DNite.

Alternatively, you could also run Choice Scarf on Hamurott and drop Sucker Punch for Knock Off (speed control/revenge killing from Scarf means less need for Sucker) and run a more standard set on Gholdengo, e.g., Covert Cloak to stop the rising Garganacl usage. Something like standard Bold Ghold with Tera Fairy, Covert Cloak, and DGleam > Make it Rain is becoming the standard I think.

I would need to actually calc it to be certain, but just eyeballing it based off the difference in base power, accuracy, and crit ratio, I believe Aqua Cutter is a higher expected damage value than Razor Shell, and is just more consistent overall. I'd recommend that, but it is a small tweak and something of a user preference.

You list Hex in your description but Shadow Ball in the moveset for Skeledirge. I'd probably go with Shadow Ball since I don't think this is meant to be a status spam team, and I would say you are one solid status spammer short from really being in that archetype.

All in all, it is good day to be giant man.

Maus wants knock off support, maybe dropping sacred sword for knock since sammh will lure in those rocky helmet users to help maus be able to do what it does best spam pop Bomb. Also tera ghost is pretty good when you need a way out from e speed or deal with ID corv, you lack a wall breaker vs stall you might want to look into gambit to help support your team vs stall and you don’t really have a Tera user so maybe king over skele would help Tera dark or Tera fighting with low kick would be pretty useful to break dozo.

For some reason Smogon didn't alert me that someone commented on this, so I didn't read it until now. Thank you so much for your answer! I'm definitely making some changes, adding Knock to Tusk and changing ghold's and hamurott's sets. I am definitely keeping Razor Shell, just because that rush when the Zapdos takes 45%, gets the defense drop, and now you have no answers to Hamurott is way too addictive.

This issue now is that my team is very Ghold weak and knock weak now that my dark is no longer bulky and cares about losing its item. Could you recommend changing a set or a pokemon to fix that?

side note: this is hilarious to me

Maus already has a good chance to 2HKO Dozo with unboosted Pop, and 2HKOs Corv at +1 after rocks damage. The only thing I can see causing me trouble on stall is skeledirge, but my team is generally able to at least force it to tera, as nearly every pokemon has a super-effective attack on it.
Otherwise, I appreciate Hamurott's ability to spread hazards and to be able to KO tusk much better than Kingambit can, as well as being less reliant on Tera as I already have Maushold and Skeledirge who really want to Tera.

This makes sense and is something I didn't consider, but also consider that with Razor Shell over Aqua Cutter you are now susceptible to Flame Body and Static garbage from the birbs, as well as usual Rocky Helmet/Rough Skin damage. Just something to think about, as if you Razor Shell into Zapdos, it won't matter if you get the Defense drop if your best speed control gets paralyzed.
This issue now is that my team is very Ghold weak and knock weak now that my dark is no longer bulky and cares about losing its item. Could you recommend changing a set or a pokemon to fix that?
Concerning Knock, you probably just need to vary your Knock absorber based on matchup. Is the opposing team super slow fat balance? Get your Choice Scarf knocked (this is actually better for you in this instance). Need the Scarf? Tusk is probably your next best knock absorber. No Garg and a weak knocker? Gholdengo can work in a pinch. Spikes only or Stealth Rocker removed? Let Zapdos get knocked and fish for para's while you're at it.

Concerning Gholdengo, since you already have Tera Fairy on Gholdengo, maybe Tera Water Skeledirge? Then you sit on Gholdengo and Torch Song up (in theory, I haven't played Skeledirge since pre-home meta). But I'd still say your best bet is keeping your Hamurott healthy in general to deal with Gholdengo.

Or, since you're running Maushold, just be like my opponents every time I run Gholdengo and flinch me 2-3 times in a row with Bite *sigh*

Hope that helps!

I had a thought, but take it with a grain of salt because I'm not a high-tier teambuilder or anything.
Originally I would've said Ting-Lu, but I think that Heatran could work over Dirge.
Pros:
  • Heatran still serves as a check to special valiant, which is one of dirges primary roles
  • It can be a rocker which allows tusk to have a slot for knock off
  • It has a better matchup versus ogerpon-cornerstone that you said your team struggled with
  • It doesn't get obliterated by gambit (Tusk and encore on the maus are good but can get weared down)
  • Not weak to knock (which is everywhere thanks to DLC 1)
  • Not naturally weak to rocks
Cons:
  • It doesn't check physical valiant as well
  • can be suprised by the occasional stomping tantrum or low kick by corner
Overall I'd say you could make it physical or specially defensive depending on if you want better matchup versus ogers or stuff like specs pult. Honestly, I want to know your thoughts about this.
This is a great RMT!
(P.S Recommended Heatran Set)
Flash Fire
Lefties
Tera Grass
Magma Storm
Earth Power
Will-O-Wisp
Stealth Rock
